I agree with what you're saying, but just from a statistical standpoint, we have to ask "How much of a percentage is too much." For example, if the US Postal Service lost 2% of all mail, that would be unacceptable. If you only got 98 out of 100 letters intended for you, that would not be a success, in my opinion. So, is one hazing incident out of 50 or even 100 lines acceptable? I agree that its a small percentage of incidents, but I'm not sure if that percentage is acceptable or not. US Postal Service for say Baltimore you have a 66% chance of getting your mail on time. Thats deplorable. 1 incident out of 50 is a success. This has been a problem since the beginning but the Pledge Process isn't perfect. It never has been and never will be. That should be taught and understood from day one. But if you have 50 lines and for your argument sake 40 of them get it right... 10 of them don't do you destroy the process? 90% effective.
Let me straw man you for a second if I may.
Lets say you have a AIDS med it cures 40 people but 10 it did nothing for and also had harmful side affects.. Would you scrap the med or seek a way to perfect it?
A teacher gives a test 90% of the class passed 10% failed would he/she scrap the testing method or study the afflicted and perfect it?
Lets use logic here and not get caught up in emotion. Right now today the pledge process is needed more than ever. I had a very stern upbringing so my process to me was nothing more than a microcosm of what I received from my parents. Some of these children don't have that. The BGLO is in a position to provide that on a small scale and I feel it should be given to them. How bout this example, if you gave a test and 90% passed and 10% died would you scrap the testing method? If you was training paratroopers and 10% died, that would be a failure of epic proportion. And the thing is paratrooping is a high risk activity, joining a BGLO isn't(or at least it shouldn't be)

I agree 91 and I also feel sad that members (of all organizations) feel that being in an organization elevates one to a position which affords them the ability to treat someone like this....
.....and then does it in the NAME of the organization.

Why as a DP would you let mofo squirt vinegar in the eyes of your line? And you never squirt in a woman eye. Especially a black woman eye. They signed their death certificate right there.

Honestly... Nope but thats the scientist in me speaking. Its a success. Look at the recall of the meds in this society. Besides using a variable that is an extreme which has never happened can't even be considered in the equation.
The Pledge Process has been going on universally since the early teens. Its about to be 100 years and the death rate is way under 1% probably 0.1%. Over 1 Million people have been initiated and you may have had 40 incidents of the past 100 years that has resulted in death. Your argument just failed. Those are the facts. Logically come against it.

I really don't want to get in to a lengthy debate with you but am I to understand that you are equating a pledge process with parents disciplining their children? If so, I must disagree with that analagy 100%. Also, are you saying that the children who don't have strict parents need a pledge process to teach them discipline? Those are the ones who end up in prison, not college. They eventually get the discipline the need. No one attending a university needs to be disciplined by a group of his/her peers to gain entry into an organization that does what? There is no logic in that! I think you are speaking from emotion without logic.. When you are a parent emotion is deeply involved and actions are controlled by logic.

Young people look at ALL of the people who have joined before them and figure that the process MUST be the same and if they went through it....so can I. this is very true and I dont think people realize how substantial that statement really is...

The process is all about sole surviving. Each person is concerned about his/her own safety. You guys talk about loyalty, but with this new process, there is none. Remember the ladies LA, the two remaining LS didn't come forward and confess to being on line with their dead line sisters. No one wants to be found guilty of participating in an illegal process so it's every man for himself. Hmmmm, I crossed in the late 90's, and you just didn't show up with out your line sisters. But I guess that is the difference between now and then, the difference between pledging and hazing

The problems are several: 1. Times have changed. You can no longer trust a bunch of 19-22 year olds to not do dangerous shyt. We are a culture of sensation seekers. Since Black folks don't ski (on average) this is an outlet for that sensation seeing, thrill ride! 2. Aspirants are the same and they are different all at the same time. Kids are just as likely to "pass the egg" as they were 30 years ago. Despite the fact that that shyt is not only disgusting but probaby more dangerous than taking wood, chapters of many organizations still do it. Young people look at ALL of the people who have joined before them and figure that the process MUST be the same and if they went through it....so can I. So it's no wonder that young people put up with so much bullshit. 3. Members have to learn to take responsibility for their actions. If I rob a grocery store to help feed the homeless and I get caught....I still tried to rob a grocery store regardless of the purpose. And if I believe in that purpose or reason for committing this act then I will proudly stand and admit it along with my guilt. Not lie and say, "It wasn't me". Grow the fuck up. Don't think in this instance anyone said "It wasn't me". Someone actually turned themselves in.

Regardless, she turned herself in, Huey. She could still be out and about and on the run if she wanted to be. There are a LOT of people who have warrents out on them but don't turn themselves in. I'm sure we have all seen the Most Wanted Lists in Post Offices, newspapers, etc.
Point is, regardless, this whole situation was retarded, and it shows even more how retarded they were when they threatened ol' girl in front of her momma. It states in the article that they filed a report with the police after that. Dumb, dumb, dumb.

OK, this is about to turn into another topic but what is the purpose of the pledge process and how do activities like this support that? How does squirting someone in the eye with vinegar or physically assaulting them bond you together or bond them to the organization? I hear ish like this and understand why some liken us to organized gangs cause this chick smooth was getting jumped in. We've gotta get back to our original purpose and extend that to the methods by which we bring new members in.

Thanks Juice and if that's the case, I agree with y'all assessment. This is one of the Universities in my state. I'm all for pledging, but this process looked like it was more hazing then anything else Student Arrested In UTC Sorority Hazing Incidents posted April 16, 2009 Seirra Smith Seirra Smith has been arrested in connection with hazing allegations against some UTC members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. Ms. Smith turned herself in on two counts of simple assault after warrants for her arrest were signed late last night. A UTC student being initiated into a sorority has alleged she was punched and kicked, winding up in the hospital with a concussion. Police have been looking into the series of hazing incidents reported to have occurred last month involving members of the UTC chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. On Wednesday afternoon, UTC officials said actions had been taken against the sorority. Chuck Cantrell, UTC spokesperson, said, "University officials are working with the Chattanooga City Police to investigate charges of hazing by members of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. The Dean of Students Office has placed the chapter under a Cease and Desist order, meaning it is suspended from all activities. "Further, all current members of the sorority are on a No Contact order, prohibiting them from having any contact with those going through the membership process. The University continues to investigate the matter, and further disciplinary actions are expected against individual members of the sorority. "The Chattanooga City Police and the Hamilton County District Attorney's Office are investigating possible criminal charges beyond student disciplinary actions. "Our campus has a zero tolerance policy toward hazing, which is supported by local and state laws. Most student organizations abide by these policies and understand that participation in organizations should be based on friendship and camaraderie and not humiliation and abuse. We take reports of hazing very seriously, and we will take all appropriate measures and disciplinary actions to ensure the safety of our students and to punish those who break these laws." A report was taken on April 10 from Jasmine Johnson and her mother Karen Drake, accusing five members of the sorority in three separate incidents of hazing in which Ms. Johnson was punched in the head, chest and stomach; kicked in the stomach and back; and sprayed in the face with vinegar. After one of the incidents, Ms. Johnson told police that she had to seek medical attention for a concussion, bruising and contusions. Suspects mentioned in the allegation were Seirra Smith, Jada Davis, Rikkee Lee, Chelsey Lay and Tarekia Dentley. Police said Wednesday, "Charges are pending further investigation due to the nature of the assaults." Ms. Johnson said on March 20 she was told to be at the First Tennessee Pavilion next to Finley Stadium. She said she was approached by Ms. Smith, a sorority member and parliamentarian. She said Ms. Smith began punching her in the side of the head. She said Ms. Smith did this several times while two others girls were behind her. She said one of the girls poured ice-cold water on her head, while the other girl had a water gun and began shooting vinegar on her. She said the vinegar was shot into her eyes, causing them to burn. Ms. Johnson said she was told on another occasion to be at the track at Brainerd High School. She said Ms. Smith again approached her along with Ms. Davis and Ms. Lee. She said they began to pour chocolate syrup and milk over her head. She said Ms. Smith then broke eggs over her hair and head. Then Ms. Smith placed an egg on her chest and punched her in the chest, breaking the egg. She said Ms. Smith next placed an egg on her stomach and punched her in the stomach. She said as she rolled over, holding her stomach from being punched, Ms. Smith kicked her in the stomach. She said a short time later she noticed she was bleeding in her private area. She said she was also paddled with a wooden paddle bearing the Delat triange on her legs and knuckles. She said she attended a ceremony on March 24 in which she was "pinned" and accepted into the sorority. She said she was still bleeding and was suffering from extreme headaches and stomach pains. She said it was then she told her mother what had happened. Mrs. Drake took her daughter to Parkridge East Hospital. She was found to be suffering from a concussion, bruising and contusions to the stomach. Mrs. Drake reported the incidents to the sorority and was told it would be handled internally. Police said the student and her mother later were at UTC for a meeting with the organization. While parked there, a vehicle pulled up behind them and continued to pull closer and closer to their vehicle. Police said once the student got out of the car, the occupants (sorority members) pulled up to the victim's car and made the statement, "B----, you better watch your back." Following this incident, the victim and her mother contacted a lawyer and filed a report with UTC and the Chattanooga Police Department. www.chattanoogan.com/articles/article_149038.aspdamn, she was pickled....
