I know we had this discussion back on the old OO...but I figured I'd ressurect it and breathe new life into it.  What are some differences between Greeks in the North, South, Midwest, West Coast in traditions, terminology, culture, etc? I have heard before that West Coast Greeks are more "Gangsterish", but to be honest, I've never met that many West Coast Greeks, and I haven't spent any time out there. |

Here is what I have noticed:
AKAs have a different handsign according to their regions...I have seen the pinkie thrown in two different ways.
I have heard region specific challenges for every organization.
I have heard the "they are popular here, but not so much up north or down south" in reference to Iotas.

The SGRhos as Southern Illinois used to throw up the pinky, at least they did in the 80's. The Sorors there had a different hand sign, it is hard to describe. I went to visit there a couple of times during undergrad and it was hard to do their sign as opposed to the pinky.

I feel that Greekdom is respected more in the South. Also, Sorors and fellow Greeks acknowledge each other more.

Someone told me recently that where she's from (midwest) Greeks do NOT wear black jackets until they've been members at least three years. I'd never heard that before.

In the Midwest, Zetas typically say: Zphi! However, in the south thier are a few additional calls.

I have noticed that a lot of the Zetas here in the south are homely, but in other regions there are some beautiful Zetas.

I used to mess with a Zeta down here in my area. She was the best looking one in her chapter..But she was crazy though...then they crossed this new line...
Man this one chick looks better than ALL THE AKA'S currently on the yard...

A southern Zeta (the only ones that I've seen)
Should be Heavy, not attractive, and have buffets at their interest meetings....
Their Zeta Weeks should be full of events where food is served....

I have heard of the myth that Zetas are to be fat and unattractive, and I still do not know where that came from considering Zeta's across the U.S do not represent in its entirety this particular look. However, in fairness you were referring to what you have seen in the South.
