To Coldfront06, what I noticed is that some Alpha chapters emphasize the book-worm and brainy image than others. Like at Michigan, the Alphas and Kappas were always competing for the highest GPA, and you guys won with regularity, HA HA!...but at other chapters, it seemed like Alphas wanted to shake the book-worm and brainy image. Not all chapters though. I have a colleague who was made at Howard and he mentioned that their approach was to bring in a diverse group of young men who would do the work required of Alpha Phi Alpha, not just a bunch of intellectuals, which was the case at the U of M Alpha chapter. Hope I answered your question. I don't think that is a REGIONAL difference more than it is simply a CHAPTER difference. I've seen (from Eastern, to Midwestern to Southern to Western) Alpha CHAPTERS that perpetuate the "intellectual" persona, while others prefer a "harder" image. There is no REGIONAL difference in that. You'll find Alphas who dress like a group of newly-converted Muslims everyday, just like you'll find a group that wears their pants saggin' off their asses and lookin' a hot mess (much to MY chagrin) everyday...and that's all over the nation.

I agree with Robe. The regional differences in Alpha I see are minor things like what they call the handsign. In AlphaSouth we call it the PHI, but other regions say the ICE or TORCH. And different regions have different steps/strolls/theme songs...stuff like that.

The Nupes in Alabama kick when they shimmey...I thought that was universal until I saw Kappas from other states

Wow at the turn this thread took! For the record, I was not trying to trash Zeta. I was just mentioning a regional difference that I personally noticed. As far as all that ish Nupe threw out there, those were solely his opinions.

And different regions have different steps/strolls/theme songs...stuff like that. Cold..your exactly right. Up North, we call the sign "The Ice" and from what Ive seen from my trips down South, the step/stroll styles are a little different. Another minor thing I noticed is Frat from the South use the term "Bruhs" and we up top tend to use the term "Bros" (Up here "Bruhs" is an Omega thing). Other than that, the only thing I see (and correct me if wrong here) is that chapters in the South tend to take over larger lines where we tend to prefer smaller lines. Besides that, based on what Ive seen...all is universal.

The lines in the south tend to be larger, because the majority of HBCUs are in the south. It is at those campuses where the lines may number 20-25 on average, simply because the numbers of Black males are larger....obviously. That's not necessarily a "southern" practice as it is an HBCU practice.
I can imagine that line numbers at say, Xi Chapter (Wilberforce) or Delta Xi (Central State)...both in OH, might be the same as a line at say Alabama A&M or Alabama State. Same for Beta at Howard and Gamma Iota at Hampton.

But with the exception of Beta, most of the Alpha chapters up here at HBCU's still tend to bring through lines that are smaller. I know it's impossible to mandate a number on a specific intake period but the norm seems to be 10 or less (give or take ) for the lines that come through. But Crazy GI is a good example. It is technically South (a road trip we use to make often), but most Northern East Coasters dont consider it deep South. But I believe they definetly brought through a few lines in the upper teens and maybe more going way back.

Now Alpha Beta Chapter (Talladega) or Alpha Chi (Fisk,) or other chapters on smaller campuses maybe exceptions because of the small student populations.

Our chapter advises Alpha Beta, and they always have small lines. Xi Xi (Jacksonville State) has had small lines since they came back as well.

From what I have found is that while Greek life in the North is big, its 10x's as popular/prominent Down South. My good friend is always amazed at how active and prominent it is with folks post college

Pinkngreen,
I met a soror of yours who is here in Huntsville from NY. I forgot her name, but she is a graduate student at Alabama A&M. I met her at the NAPC (N. Alabama Pan-Hellenic Council) Wine Tasting set a few weeks ago. The next week, I saw her again at the Debutante Ball (my niece was a deb.) She was awe-struck! She said she'd met at least 300 sorors in a matter of a week or so.
Epsilon Gamma Omega puts on a show with their debutante ball! She was in AKA heaven with all those sorors!

Greeks from down South are usually bigger and blacker than those up North or out West. East coast Greeks just look random.
