Honestly, I don't see anything wrong with Sweetheart groups. They are just their to support the men/women in the organizations. On the other hand, in my opinion MiAKA and other groups like it are disrespectful to the orgs they are claiming to represent.

There is nothing wrong with Sweethearts as long as they have a specific purpose. I really don't think that purpose should be ongoing though.
To have Alpha Angles help out when brothers were pledging was a good thing. They assisted the men and were there for them when they could count on no-one else. Psychologically, I believe that to be a very strong message. Pledges CHOSE their Angels and were dependent on them sometimes as much as they were their LB's.
Today, auxillary groups are nothing more than liabilities. They are organizations with their own purpose including but not limited to helping the fraternity. I don't think it's necessary and poses a threat to the organization to which they are attached.
Not to mention the perception of many aux groups these days.
Why is it that way? I'm glad you asked. It's that way because people don't pledge (traditionally) anymore. When pledging was above ground, the Angles were visible to all and therefor their existance was justified. Now, people just pop up one day and claim that they pledged 8 weeks underground and THEN make some sweethearts. WTF? Not to mention, it's more cool to say that you fvkked some young freshman sweetheart and that they're your sex slave than it is to say that you have sweethearts that you respect and hold in the highest regard. I mean...God forbid you be accused of being a gentleman which in todays terms is read as: "SAVING DEM HOES"
Thus ends my rant....any questions?

So okay what about the Sweetheart organizations that are branching off on their own nationally? They don't rely on the help of their brother/sister organizations anymore although the name is still in existance.

Good point GE. I applaud the Alpha Angels...they are an incorporated organization that exists outside of Alpha Phi Alpha. Now we all know they have some type of relationship, but its not official. AAI actually has national and regional officers.

Our sweethearts were great! They really were like a "sister" organization more than anything else. Some brothers did date them, but for the most part they were an auxiliary of the frat and the chapter. We went bowling, to movies, football and basketball games with the sweethearts, and they were held in the highest esteem.
What I used to really love was the way we'd sing to the sweethearts at the step shows, and present them with flowers and gifts..and let's not even talk about Miss Black and Gold! She would have an entourage of brothers like Queen Elizabeth, and when we traveled, she had a escort everywhere she went. It's nothing like meeting some of those Alpha Dreamgirls from back in the day. Their faces still light up when they talk about how the brothers treated them like a queen, and serenaded them at their dorms on campus.

I have a problem seeing a chapter Ms. Black and Gold walking into a banquet or into an event unescorted.
Maybe i'm just a little old fashioned but to me, your Ms. Black and Gold should have a designated escort during all conventions.
Just me...

I recently saw on facebook where some Iota Sweethearts were having an informational. It is totally against our constitution for sweethearts to make other sweethearts. I guess thats what happens when a sweetheart org. starts acting like an org. For better or worse, my fraternity is slowly but surely becoming mainstream.

Well as an Iota Sweetheart I dont think its wrong for having an informational about sweethearts. BUT what we do in MY chapter is when we have interest meetinsg, we have them AS A CHAPTER BUT it is important to inform young ladies of Iota Sweethearts. But its important that young ladies have time to talk strictly with the sweethearts and for interested young men to talk strictly with the brothers. Everything cannot and should not be mixed. Thats some of the struggles of having females inside a fraternity. But with maturity and wisdom of chapters, it can be done successfully, and has been done within my undergraduate chapter.
I dont think Iota is becoming mainstream. Iota having the only sweetheart auxilary affiliated nationally is far beyond the norm of other auxilary organizations. I just think that Iota is just realizing that it takes a LADY to make a lady. A brother of Iota cant show a potential sweetheart how to be a gracious lady. But with supervision I think its necessary for both parts both brothers and hearts to help make sweethearts. Just like it takes a mother and a father to raise a child, thats how i look at it.

That was one thing I like about the Greeks up at Howard.. I asked if they had sweet, and one of the Sorors was like oh now, we dont have that mess here! lol
