This is something that I would love everyone's input on -especially the old heads.
Do you feel as if technology, specifically the internet such as greek messageboards or greeks only websites has hurt the value of the good ol' fashion road trip?
When I first crossed I remember my prophytes hammering into my head that we need to go travel and represent not only yourself, but your chapter elsewhere. Leave the region.
I've noticed that now, because of the power of the internet and other technologies, road tripping is not as common. Greeks are getting to know one another via internet and some have even vouched for those they have never met due to extensive online conversations.
Will this become the new "microwave" protocol or am I just reading into this thing too much?
Let's discuss

As the younger generations come aboard (dang I feel old saying that lol), it will become more popular. I don't think it's a reflection of Greek life or "microwave" protocol as much as it is just things evolving. Kids don't play outside in many areas anymore and not just because it's unsafe. People are just becoming more impersonal.

whoa! @ vouching for people you've never met on the strength of online convo double whoa! Reason being, people fake the funk on-line ALL the time. We have all heard of perps on the internet being busted, so for folks to even try and vouch for someone's creditability only through internet conversations and they don't know ANYBODY in real life that knows this person is mad suspect. As anything in life, there is 6 degrees of seperation in the greek world as well and there should at least be one person you know of who has at least heard of or knows someone who knows someone who knows that person

I do agree internet is doing what otherwise might be impossible for some... I think about my relationship with Southie... I consider her a real friend of mine. She's been to Houston now a couple time and all because we met on OO. I still havent been to Chi yet, but I still plan on it... Now as far as it being a substitution, I cant really say. I did some roadtrips, all in TX though.. you know you can ride here for 2 days and still be in TX! lol

Now, meeting a friend on the internet is different to trying to vouch for a person who is suppose to be greek and you've ONLY met on the internet, Fatal. That is apples and oranges.

Has anyone ever noticed how greek life celebrities are made via facebook and they are vouched for by the time that major greek events such as "ATL Greek Picnic" comes around? I truly believe that in some instances one's internet popularity translates into acceptance on other levels.
By the way, I want to start my own Greek Picnic for older greek members because it's getting younger and younger. lol.

Talkin bout "don't act like you don't be all on my profile everyday! You know me!" That very day, I ceased to add people just b/c they were Blue n White

Title it alumni NPHC picnic Fatal, and that might help with the age group of the crowd. I thought about that, but they said I would be making it look like UG just couldn't come at all or something and they didn't want to necessarily alienate them

and the real title is "Old School Greek Picnic"
interestingly, the Philadelphia (alumni) NPHC hosts both events

Yes I think that these on-line meet & greet (verification) is absolutely absurd, insane, & crazy! All together!
There is no excuse not to ROADTRIP, that is part of the essence & lifeblood of OMEGA
**** SIDEBAR **** Some of us did or are doing it too long & too much, NUFF SAID!
But I do remember for almost two years I took classes on Tuesday & Thursdays ONLY because the Road Trip began on Thursday Afternoon & some times ended on Monday Night (really Tuesday Morning) but that has led to me being very knowledable about my Frat & other greeks because to this day you can tell me a state & I can tell you some chapters (UnderGraduate & Graduate) in that state, what district they are in, & name some names of people I know because I met them (or made them) also they know me, so in closing I wish a Nicca would try to try me and/or vouch for somebody on-line that they never met or don't know, that is KAT as HELL, (excuse my french) but that is so UN-OMEGA!
ROO I'M OWT!

Yes.
Technology or our evolved method of communication in this era has somewhat hurt the value of the close, interpersonal relationships we share. I mean, the technology itself is great and extremely convenient for a person who is on the go and doesn’t have a lot of free time. Things evolve and that’s fine - but it has taken a little something away from more personal fellowship I believe. Now when you talk about Greekdom on the net, it’s simple. Members have to move more carefully because we already know perps are posing and just waiting to catch someone sleeping. Without meeting the person, actually conversing with them, or personally knowing someone solid or credible who can vouch for them….how can you “really” be sure who you’re talking to??
In terms of Road Trips…
I’m not that old, but even being a product of the mid 90’s prior to the internet craze, I clearly recall the road trip being GOLDEN and quite necessary during that era in Greekdom. The summer after my LB’s and I crossed, the Bros in my chapter practically made us spend time with our Dean traveling and linking with various chapters outside our area. Cause peep - Outside of the chapters you already know of as a fresh neo (ie: the ones you visited or who came to visit you while you were on line), you had to travel to get your name out there. You would test, get tested, connect, and form a link (outside of the obvious) with chapters on the road. It was about Chapter reputation and representation because automatic respect and acknowledgement wasn’t given as easy as it is appears to be today in 2010.
Somehow, something must have changed along the way…because you hear about chapters now in greekdom that never even step foot off their own yard. Suspect.

^^interesting. We didn't make an affirmative effort to roadtrip when I crossed. We knew the chapters in the region through attending conferences, seeing pledges, going to probates, personal travel (during which we made a point to visit the local chapters). All of the "road-tripping" we did in those days was intake related. In retrospect, FB played a role in meeting others. But it was more of a "hey, I'm going to Cleveland next week. Lemme FB the Sorors there and see if they wanna hang out while I'm there." Then the relationship grew from there.

Good Post Iceman & I now some of us are grown & working with families & other obligations but I remember events like
100 HOURS OF PURE OMEGA FUN!
Where the party/events went on for 100 consecutive hours (NON-STOP & NO SLEEP)
I remember getting out of class on Thursday afternoon (packed on Wednesday night, bags in the trunk) & we hit the road almost every weekend after we crossed & I remember going to the St. Louis Classic in 1996 & I wasn't a Que for a full month yet!
WRECK FEST 1996! (NOT THE BEST MEMORY) But alas I digress,
I can't believe that WE (people) are FB other people & staying on thier own yards (State and.or District) but then again

ROO I'M OWT! iDIED! Different times though. I was in undergrad from 98-02 and if you were visiting a campus or greeks coming to ours, picked up the phone and called your respective org. members to let them know you coming. But this was before the big message board craze, Facebook, Myspace, etc.
