www.nccosmeticarts.com/House Bill 291 signed into lawDuring the last session of the North Carolina General Assembly a bill was passed and signed into law by Governor Bev Perdue to create a new licensure for natural hair care specialists. This new license will require 300 hours of training at an approved cosmetic art/natural hair care school. Once the law goes into effect July 1, 2010 current natural hair care practitioners will have 1 year to obtain licensure by passing the state board examination developed by NIC, the Board’s testing provider. Natural hair care salons will also be required to become licensed within the year. The Board and its committees are hard at work developing curriculum and regulations to guide this portion of the cosmetic art industry. Many experts in the area of natural hair care have volunteered time to service for the Board and have participated in early planning sessions to help ensure a solid foundation is established for this soon to be regulated licensure class. GOOD!

Nah....been consistently chemically enslaved since I was 12. But I don't get burns. I use a no lye mild and haven't ever has any problems. It just hit me the other day that I really don't know what texture hair I have. It's hard to tell from a little new growth.

Don't EVEn get me started on how relevant this was to my most recent "Natural Hair Care Specialist" experience. I will NEVER, in my LIFE, go back to one w/o a personal rec. UGH I went to one right at the end of my transition and it was a TOTAL waste of money. That was when I really learned to speak up in the hair salon. After that I realized that it just depends on the stylist...my long time stylist did my BC a few months later and twisted me up with no issue. That "natural hair stylist" sent me home with a bad, tangledtwist out, no advice on products and bad advice on my BC.

I thought you were natural before? Someone on here was natural for 5 years and then went back to relaxing...that wasn't you? Quiet. It wasn't Quiet...this was long before Quiet got her haircut. Whoever it was went back to relaxing and had a very negative opinion of natural hair. I remember reading their posts and thinking "oh since your hair didn't do what you wanted it to do then natural hair was bad, unmanageable, unprofessional, etc." I just can't think of who that was.

My thing is, call yourself what you are. Just because you do braids and locs doesn't make you a natural hair stylist. You are a braider and/or loctian. That is all

I HAVE BEEN REMOTIVATED!!!!!!!!! THERE IS HOPE!!!!!! Not to say that you guys don't motivate me, but here, you guys give great advice on care and styles and products, but I have SEEN the proof. lol I meantion in Random that I found some family members on FB. One of them, a female, got a really bad perm that resulted in 2nd degree burns. this pretty much forced her to go natural. Going through her pics, i could see her "journey". This is her hair when she started 2 1/2 years ago up until last week.

OK so today is the first day I've gone to work with my curly fro. I've bene wearing tree braids and then wigs (with my hair cornrowed underneath) for the last few months until I got a lil length going for me. I cut off all the relaxed hair a couple of months ago.
Sidebar- I HATE SHRINKAGE!!!!
OK, back on topic, you would have thought I rolled in with red spiky hair. The reactions have ranged from quizzical to overly effusive. It's just hair people; nothing to see here. Move along.

Co-washed with some Garnier Fructise conditioner, sprayed some Jane Carter leave in conditioner, and shingled it with some Shea Moisture curl something from Target. That's about it. Stylist kept trying to get me on the MJ bandwagon but $58 baby buttercreme? Ummm no. it looks ok with teh cheap stuff. I'll have to go back and read this thread for alternate suggestions. Y'know Damie could be kinda hot if he'd stop pulling that spit curl down in the middle of his forehead like El Debarge but he won't listen. He thinks he can single handedly bring the shag back (I hear he was the wig model for that number Eddie Long rocked a couple of months ago) even though I keep telling him that's not what's hot in the streets anymore.

I couldn't find it to save my life but good ole admin in training Chal hooked me up. You can answer one question. WHat the heck do you do with shea butter with regards to your hair? do you blend it with something? I saw some in the beauty supply and it looked like a brick.

I use it to make a hair moisturizer called shealoe. I add coconut oil, almond oil, lavender and aloe vera gel. I like to use the raw white shea butter because they yellow is just too greasy/oily for me.

ok 2 things:
1. I see you 91! co-washing and shingling and carrying on! 2. HunnyBun, I'll need that shealoe recipe from you ASAP (as I blowdry my hair in the winter and need a moisturizing situation for my ends).

what's shingling?

Post by LejaOMG on Nov 30, 2010 10:42:18 GMT -5
Shingling™ is a styling method developed and created at Miss Jessie’s salon to manually "turn kinks to curls", you can achieve maximum curl definition and elongation if you capture your hair in the wet stage. Apply Miss Jessie’s CURLY PUDDING™ or Miss Jessie’s curly meringue™ and use a comb to spread product from root to end smoothing and stretching hair in a south bound direction. We call it Shingling because it looks like flat shingles in a brick-layered pattern. This styling method is excellent for naturally kinky textures. (video below) missjessies.com/05_styling/videos.htm

I just add stuff a little bit at a time until it's what I want. Some folks use a microwave to melt the shea butter but I use a blow dryer...it takes longer but I have a lot more control. I still haven't bought a mixer.
