HELP!!!!! lol
My last relaxer was in July. I've made the decision NOT to go the chemical route anymore (although i only did it 2 or 3 times a year). My question is, what do i do now to make and maintain healthy and stylish hair.
I need recommendations, people. Shampoos!! Conditioners! Defrizzers! Detanglers!! Heat protection! Etc! Etc! Etc!

Most people (and quite a few OOAers) lurk and it suits us just fine.

Chal read my mind... I STAY on the hair boards, but I'd still like to know what the Old Head Naturals of OOA do to maintain.
BTW: I did it. I hadn't had a relaxer in 10 months, and I cut of the straight hair last night. I did my Big Chop!

i don't want to cut, though. How long does it generally take the "straight" ends to grow out?
By looking at my hair, you can't tell it hasn't had a relaxer. Right now, I'm using the Olive Oil products, but I think my hair has adapted to it and I don't get the results I got in the beginning.

I didn't do a BC either. I had neck-length permed hair when i started. It took me about a year and a half to get my natural hair to the same length. I intermittently trimmed (as usual), so when the year was up, I didn't have 10 inches of natural and 10 inches of perm. The perm had been gradually trimmed off.

Yeah, even if you do mini chops or a BC the relaxed ends will have to be chopped off. Some folks just let them fall off but I would NEVER advise that, it seems like that is begging for damaged ends.
I personally had 2 big trims because I got so lazy during transition and I was doing a lot of heat styling so I ended up with damaged hair and then I got my BC (16 months total).
I guess the amount of time to let the relaxed ends "grow out" depends on how you want to wear your hair. If you'll be pressing your hair then it probably doesn't matter. You could just do mini chops or regular trims as your hair grows until all the relaxed hair is gone. If you won't be pressing then you just have to figure out how much new growth you want to have after you BC and be careful with heat use so that you don't end up with heat damage. It just all depends on what your goal is.
Also remember that BC does not have to mean TWA.

I never thought I would do a big chop. But my hair is fine, so my hair relaxed needed a level of tlc that became too difficult to give it while I was tending to curly hair at the same time. Plus my curls were begging to be set free so I let 'em loose!
I've been co-washing and playing in my hair since Sunday (when I had only cut the back). I swear I take like 5 showers a day now so that I can restyle and discover something new....

hush, Dea. lol
ok, what is TWA? My hair is layered. the longest part coming just below my shoulders, the shortest frames my face. So I may be looking at a while.
Would it help if I got a sew in? That way i wouldn't have to put heat or anything on it. Just take it down every so often, get a really good conditioner and treatment and get another one.
Would that help the growing/grow out process?

TWA = teenie weeny afro
I hate braids, so I did the sew-in thing for awhile for my grow-out (but I always left the front out, so it required frequent heat). I think it's a good move (assuming that your hair can handle it...some folks' hair is too soft to stand up to the friction of the thread and the weight of the tracks). Just be sure to care for your hair and scalp underneath...and take a lil break between installs

that makes sense. When I do the sew in, i don't leave anything out because there's a "center piece" which is basically a part weaved onto a clear mesh so that your scalp will show as if you parted your own hair. As for the breaks, I think a cute lil puff might work at home, but ugh, i'd have to figure out what to do for work.
Ooh, I know. Vacation time. lol

YAY for a thriving Natural hair thread! @ Madea ANYWAY ladies, I started growing my hair out, let it grow for about a month, then chopped off all the relaxed hair. I had a TWA (now that I know what that means...LOL) for about 2-3 months; by then my hair was too long to call it teeny weeny anymore. By 6 months, I had a huge fro (but, my hair grows fast). @ Chal, hair grows appox. 1/2 in on avg. each month. So, depending on how long you want you natural hair to be before showing it, multiply the #of inches you want by 2.

I had a texturizer, so I don't know if it not being all the way straight made it more conducive to not beaking, but I just kept trimming mine regularly (every 2 months or so), and eventually it was all natural. This is the day I cut the last of the texturized hair out... ...it stayed around this length through the entire growing out process. I got my last texturizer in july 03, and this was oct 04...so it took just over a year. While it grew out I mainly wore it flat ironed, but every so often I did wash 'n go ponytails/buns.
