ok, thanks! (now...to find raw shea butter ) so, with no hand-mixer, do you use a whisk? How do you get the air into the mixture? I'm going to make some when I run out of my Oyin whipped pudding (which is not a pudding at all, but more of a shealoe consistency) I came across this recipe as well (it recommends double-boiling instead of microwaving): kinkycurlymagazine.blogspot.com/2010/01/update-new-shea-loe-recipe.html

I get my shea butter from the discount mall or maybe a festival. I think I'm going to start ordering it though.
I usually use a fork but that's because I forget about the whisk, lol. I don't know about getting air into the mixture. I used to get that fluffy texture but I got lazy. I used double boiling once when I made some grow oil (which was a mess) a long time ago and I don't know why I haven't tried it since.
I'm going to try the recipe in that link next. I've never had mine mold but the AVG separating is sooooo annoying.

ok 2 things: 1. I see you 91! co-washing and shingling and carrying on! 2. HunnyBun, I'll need that shealoe recipe from you ASAP (as I blowdry my hair in the winter and need a moisturizing situation for my ends). #thatisall I used this recipe public.fotki.com/newmoe1/moeshealoe-/I don't really have any measurements, I just kind of go by the consistency. I just add stuff a little bit at a time until it's what I want. Some folks use a microwave to melt the shea butter but I use a blow dryer...it takes longer but I have a lot more control. I still haven't bought a mixer. OK so you have to melt that ish down. Makes sense. The Shea Moisture stuff in Target is pretty good and like 10 bucks. I cannot believe the frenzy over the MJ products, particularly because they are so expensive. Even with a buy one get one free, that ish needs some real gold flecks in it to make sense. @ Leja, I don't shingle like in the vid but I do find that if I just put some moisturizer in my hair and comb through i don't get the defined curls. I have to tug on my hair section by section and the curls pop. I am absolutely amazed at how curly my hair is. I'm a 3c. I just feel like it's going to take forever to get some length. My hair is about 3 inches long but with shrinkage it looks about an inch. If hair grows 1/2 inch a month, it must grow like 1/8th in a corkscrew. Maybe I'll try making this shealoe over Christmas. My hair def seems to need a lot more moisture natural than relaxed. I'm a newbie so I could be doing something wrong but we'll see. I don't like the KCCC wet look. That's all i know for sure so far.

OK question... a friend of mine who has been natural for years told be wearing your hair braided for extended periods of time affects the curl pattern. it comes back but it takes weeks for the hair to regain enough moisture to curl properly. Anyone have an opinion on this?

no thoughts on that one; never had braids. Closest I came was cornrows under my weave; but I moisturized my hair underneath the entire time, so I'm not sure. Speaking of curl patern, I need to cop a Brazilian Keratin Treatment ASAP. Need some built-in heat protection for the winter! Anybody wanna let me hold $160?

Is it coincidence that Lev comes back the day after we revive the natural hair thread? I think not. Give us an update on how Mrs. Lev/Work is doing please!

time to rinse out my Brazilian Keratin! I love this stuff! So Leja You've heard about thisOne of the biggest concerns with a keratin treatments is that some of the brands it's marketed under contain formaldehyde (yes, the same solution used to embalm dead bodies). Some of these formaldehyde containing formulas aren't approved by the FDA. Others may tell you that they're formaldehyde-free, but still contain trace amounts (minimal enough to legally claim them formaldehyde-free). Also, 450 degrees is extreme heat to place on the hair, especially since the flat iron has to make several passes to thoroughly seal in the treatment. If you're pregnant or nursing, you should not have a keratin treatment. YOU do it yourself? If so do you have to straight you hair afterwards? I might want to try this to loosen up my curl pattern.

A combination of oils that are supposed to stimulate/promote hair growth. I made a batch and all it did was mess up my pillow and comforter and make my skin greasy, LOL. A lot of folks love it...not I.

Anyone have an opinion on this? When I started to keep my hair braided or twisted for long periods of time it just kind of stayed stretched after washes. I don't think my issue was one of moisture though. I've been thinking about getting back into co washing but I just don't know if I have the patience. I like not having to do my hair for a week or more at a time.

Braids do not change my curl pattern at all. (I am mainly a 4A with some 3C at the nape...I think.)

I think I went natural about 2 or 3 months ago? I love Love LOVE the Kinky-Curly line. It's organic, and really takes the "kink" out of your hair. The Curling Custard and the Knot Today detangler are great, but don't waste your money on the clarifying shampoo or the conditioner. kinky-curly.com/

"Moisture comes from water, not oil." HUH? ?? it does. water moisturizes while oil SEAL in moist. Kinda like when you put on baby oil while your body is still damp from the shower.

ahhh; yeah get a water based moisturizer (where the first ingredient is water and the next one is maybe glycerin or aloe, and which is mineral oil free). You'll see SUCH a difference between that and how your hair behaves with the oil "moisturizers" (which are good in their own right, but are more like lubricators or softeners than moisturizers). Lol @ hot water treatments. Actually steam treatments are super moisturizing. Some people follow that up with an oil to seal in the moisture.
Another thing: wet =/= moisturized.

can I just say that I'm excited to see 91 jumping into the natural hair scene!! I'm not nuts with it like the people on the hair boards (deep conditioning multiple times per week and such, lol) but I'm glad I took the time to educate myself about my hair and what I'm doing to it.
