LOVE the smell of virgin coconut oil but it leaveslil white clumps in my hair. I don't knwo what I'm doing wrong. melt it down and mix in about a 25% ratio of a scent-free carrier oil (like sweet almond or grapeseed...castor might be a little too thick). Voila! It'll stay liquid in the container AND in your hair Thanks hon!

Chal, you started this thread. How goes your journey? Still natural or did you give in?

I'm not sure if I should use the term "natural" because it seems to go a lot deeper than just no chemicals. I haven't given in to the creamy crack, but i'm still tempted. I've been doing the sew-ins, blow outs, roller sets, and quick weaves. I'm still experimenting with different products to see what my hair likes. It's definitely a journey.

Yea and I guess its like our food they claim stuff is natural but when you look at the back of the bottle and see some stuff you can't pronouce you're like yea ok! I have found this transition a very difficult but enlightening process. I have started using Mekatek and a homemade mixture of some other stuff and my hair has grown so much! I will hunt you down and chop all your beautiful new growth off if this Megatek I just bought doesn't yield results.....LOL keep us posted on that too. Found a equestrian supply store nearby that carries it. I'll buy it if somebody I know does well with it. Are you using it as a rinse-out or a leave in?

I've been struggling a bit with finding products that leave my hair soft and moisturized without leaving it greasy. A teeny bit of the BCO gives me exactly the desired effect. I ordered it online from Tropical Isle Living.

Megatek Coconut Oil Rosemary Oil Kemi Oyl Water I use the vitamin E on my skin (removes dark marks) and edges (stop breakage). All mixed in a bottle makes a great daily leave-in now I have to just add the BCO.

Why do you all mix other oils in your megatek? #seriousquestion
And just for clarity, ya'll are "greasing" your scalp with it and neither applying it to your hair nor rinsing it out as directed?

I wash my hair every two to three days so I am not technically "greasing" my scalp LOl. The only time I don't do this is when I have a sew-in so I use a different concotion. Coconut, rosemary,Oilve, castor oil, and vitamin E are carrier oils so they actually work better (to me and on my hair) when mixed because different oils serve different purposes. Even if you don't wash frequent depending on your hair type and if you are using it on your "hair" or "scalp" your hair can still soak up most of the oils. I try to minimize products that aren't mostly natural or that contain parabens. If you look on the back of naturla or Organic products you will see they have multiple oils in the ingredients liek Shea Moisture. That is what keep your hair greasy and sticky all the product build-up not the natural oils. If you are using the mekatek as a daily you should dilute it with water and at least one oil. LIke everyone said its kind of trial and error so depending on your type texture you have to find the oils and products that work best. I have super dry hair so mixing works for me. BUT with anything too much of somthing can be bad so its really trial and error. Hope this makes sense sorry so long.
Jojoba Oil - Great for all hair types. Jojoba has an ability to inhibit excess activity of the sebaceous glands making it the perfect choice for people with oily scalps that still need conditioning. Can be used for dry hair as it helps to moisturize your hair properly.
Olive Oil - strengthens your hair and nourishes. Olive oil adds loads of shine and smoothes the cuticles. Great for fizzy hair! Just a note: You might want to use a conditioner after an hot olive oil hair treatment as I have found hair is still tangle.
Coconut Oil - is one of the oil which helps in the lubrication of the hair. It softens the hair and conditions the scalp. It also provides the essential proteins required for nourishing damaged hair. It is very useful for damaged hair due to its ability to strengthen it. Also said to be a wonderful oil for Dandruff.
Rosemary Herbal Oil - is very useful for the unwanted and flaky dandruff problems. Rosemary oil helps in stimulating follicles, as a result of which, hair grow longer and stronger.
Castor oil - Rich in ricinoleic acid (triglyceride of fatty acid), castor oil can be used to treat skin conditions such as fungal infections. It nourish hair and prevent the scalp from drying by retaining moisture Castor oil added to hair care products helps to seal moisture, soften, and thicken hair.
Vitamin E oil - Vitamin E is a well known antioxidant and when added to homemade products, helps extend their shelf life. Vitamin E acts as a rejuvenator and protection for scalp and skin.
Avocado Oil- Perfect for Dry Hair. Avocado oil is full of vitamins your hair needs like vitamins A, E, D and potassium. This added to other carrier oils makes a perfect deep treatment.
Hemp Seed Oil - Brings gloss and manageability to hair as well as relief from dry scalp or hair damage caused by blow-dryer heat, chemical perms, coloring or sunlight. Loaded with moisturizing and replenishing Essential Fatty Acids
Megatek is not all natural but I like it. The best products are ones that are free from the items below. These are the things that weigh your hair down and clogs your pores.
Alcohol Silicone Free Paraffin Paraben Propylene glycol Synthetic fragrance PABA DEA Sulfate Petroleum Phosphate Mineral Oil

Ok, that makes sense. I make my own hair products, so there's no alcohol, silicone, etc. The few products that I buy such as gel and twisting creme are also all-natural and vegan, so yeah.
by "greasing" your scalp, I just meant the technique. Are you parting your hair and applying it to the scalp like grease? Or are you using a squirt bottle and applying it more like base? I wash my hair at least 1x/wk, so I'm not so worried about build-up. What I AM worried about is whether my wimpy natural shampoo will get all the megatek out of my hair.

Parting my hair and squirting in between the parts. If you ever need to squeaky clean feeling use Apple Cider Vinegar (not with every wash ) or a good dry shampoo in between washes that will help get the excess grim out your hair.

again, that makes perfect sense. I do a lil ACV/baking soda pre-poo when my scalp has a lot going on (as when I'm just taking out a weave) or if I've been co-washing for several weeks straight. Brown Sugar and Lavender scrub for when I REALLY need to exfoliate. Cool! Thanks!
I don't know anything about dry shampoo.

Dry shampoo works great on natural, locked and relaxed hair. It helps remove excess oils in between washes. Spray at the root, massage through your hair, or comb through with a big tooth comb. Here are some I heard good reviews about I use the Fekkai you can get it at Sephora or Ulta.

Just FYI, I would caution you against such sweeping statements when it comes to hair....at least as it relates to what certain products & ingredients do to your hair. Things that cause problems for one person work perfectly fine for others. Silicones for example...I know a lot of people talk about staying away from them because they cause build up & weigh the hair down...but I never had any problems with them. In fact, my hair did better with silicones than without. Alcohol is another example...I've had no problems with them, though others have. Just as with everything else, its best to figure out what works and what doesn't work for your hair via trial and error. (And FWIW...the issues with some of the items you listed are unrelated to weighing the hair down or clogging the pores...sulfates, for example, actually dry the hair out) The best products are ones that are free from the items below. These are the things that weigh your hair down and clogs your pores. Alcohol Silicone Free Paraffin Paraben Propylene glycol Synthetic fragrance PABA DEA Sulfate Petroleum Phosphate Mineral Oil

^^ These are MY reccommendations on things I like that work good for ME. You are right and I mention that in my earlier post its all about trial and error and finding what works best for YOU. Yes some dry out hair, weigh it down, clog pores. Not saying alcohol and silicones in hair don't work but alot of things we eat, use on our hair & body may work but may not always be good for us. Some people's purpose when going/being natural is to stray away from most if not all chemicals in their hair; others just want to wear their own hair unaltered by relaxer. Again, I just put the info out there it is up to the individual to research and continue to try the product or take it with a grain of salt. Again these are just MY recs for things that have worked during my au naturale pursuit that may help someone else. Not trying to sell or persuade for or against anything.

The one thing this natural transition has done for me is taught me to read ingredients. I was wasting mad money on products that were mainly mineral oil based on brand. Now, unless you have some premium ingredients near the top of the list, you don't get my $$$.
Leja, does anything in your bathroom have a label? or is everything a home concoction in a jar or bottle with what it is handwritten in Sharpie? LOL

Leja, does anything in your bathroom have a label? or is everything a home concoction in a jar or bottle with what it is handwritten in Sharpie? LOL LMBO! My bathroom is FULL of labels from my past product-junkie days. I'll have to post a pic when I get home, cause it's wild! Of the products that I actually use, I make: 1. oil blend 2. pre-poo 3. scalp scrub 4. curl-defining creme 5. shealoe butter I sometimes make my own shampoo and deep conditioner. Right now, I'm using these Oyin Handmade products: oyinhandmade.com/shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=14_16&products_id=20For natural styling, I use Oyin products as well. After consulting the site, it turns out that I own everything they make, lol. When my hair's straightened, I use Biosilk. When I'm trying to achieve a certain style, I'm less discriminating w/what I use (because I'll be washing it out shortly). I'm a fan of ORS and QP styling products.
