That movie Good Hair just hit me the wrong way. Little black girls are going to grow up thinking their hair is suddenly going to turn Indian Remy when they get to be adults because we as Black women are obsessed with trying to force our hair to do something other than what it naturally does. I've never had problems with relaxer damage or traction alopecia but if we took that $9 BILLION DOLLARS we're spending and redirected it, we could be fierce. It's an experiment, not a political statement, but so far it's going OK. And then I watched this recently, I started to feel like I was part of the problem

Sadly, Im back to the crack. Bad "natural hair stylist" incident. NEVER AGAIN. So I have to transition oh the joy.

But at least you've done it before. I would think after you learn all the tricks, transitioning would be easier. This first time through..........whew!

The easiest way for me to transition was to let an inch or two of new growth grow, and then chop it off. Anything else you try to do will badly damage your hair if you don't watch it...I tried to do the two texture thing (natural and relaxed) in my hair for a while and all it wound up doing was breaking my hair off. If you have the patience for dealing with that, then more power to you!

I was not feeling that 60 bucks every 6 to 8 weeks my hair stylist was bleeding off of me...now I just wash, condition, and go, and my wallet is fatter! plus now I'm glad I don't have to explain to my future daughter why her hair is not "bad", "nappy," etc without looking like a total hypocrite.

Yeah, I USED to do that when I was "newly natural" but now that I've "learned" my hair and I know what works I stick to what I know UNTIL it's not working anymore...then it's back to the drawing board. I am a retired product junkie! ;DThus far, I used good ole miss Jessie's of which I ONLY purchase during December BOGO and that last me ALL year. I only do my hair 4 times a month (every Friday) which equals 48 times a year. I do my hair myself UNLESS it's a special occasion then I'll go to a salon. I am thinking about tryin Shea Moisture's at Target...heard that product line might be giving Miss Jessie a run for her money at 1/4 the price

But Miss Jessie's has cones and paraffin in it. I thought those were supposed to be bad?

^^^It's really up to the individual.
I spend way less on products now but even in the beginning I spent less. The last time I bought a products for my hair was probably a few months ago. I still try products but I stick to what I know I like (butter, light creamy things, moisturizing conditioners, etc). I also don't co-wash, do wash-n-gos, do anything with curl definition or press my hair so those might be other reasons.

Braid and curls are so great for transitioning hair. I'd put in bog braids and put perms rods on the ends (usually rolling the relaxed hair) and it was such an easy style. It helped me get used to big hair.
That sew in video makes me appreciate the fact that I don't wear weave...that is a doggone mess.

@ Smiley thanks, but that wouldn't have been the first time i'd worn a sew in, and i am aware of how to properly remove it. Although I do know how to take one out, chick in the video was NOT exaggerating about the time. that is why i return to my beauticians for the removal process.

and Bun, that chick did mess up that time, but she didn't let it discourage her for the weaves. instead, she took the time to learn what to do the next time.

Yeah I saw the other videos on the side where her hair looked fine but I still won't be wearing weave, unless it's part of a costume or for medical reasons.

Glycerine and my hair are not a good combo at all. I'll be so happy to get past this TWA phase so I have more options.

My 16 year old told me she wants to go natural. I am mad at myself because I just started letting her get her hair permed 2 years ago, when she started high school. Right after that I started reading about natural hair care. She has extremely thick hair and it is pretty long (BSL) so I won't be doing a BC but we are going to try it. I think I will too. I tried it a while back and then got lazy. My hair is not thick at all, probably a 3c texture, so I get convicted when I see the thick 4 grades going natural successfully.
I don't know where to start with my daughter though. Did anyone visit a hair salon that focuses on natural hair care prior to going natural? I am not going to go back and read through this whole thing to find out, sorry.
Oh yeah, and I am just going to pop back in here and start posting just like I haven't been gone for months :-).

How's the hair ladies? Try any new styles, products, techniques, etc? I'm all weaved up right now, invisible part technique with curly hair. My plan is to straighten to change things up and for a length check in the next few days or week before I start class. I admit, I miss my own natural hair, but it's getting weaved right back up before school begins.

Like, do people mistake it for your own hair? I love weaves, but haven't had one in awhile because I don't want to damage whatever part of my own hair is exposed for the part (and most of the "closure technique" weaves I see look very obvious).

i have a sew in at the moment. it's very low maintainance and I love it. as for the invisible part, if the stylist knows what they're doing, it's cute. If they don't it can be as wide as three lanes on the interstate

so all of the hair I'm seeing here is fake? If so, I could work with that (though I'd get a curlier texture to eliminate the scalpiness)
btw, is this photo an example of the "cute" version or the "interstate" version?

Yea. None of here hair is out. The thing with invisible parts is they don't last as long as the actuall sew-in. Well, they do, but as your new growth comes in, the part gets bigger. So you may have to get it touched up after about 2-3 weeks.

I am wearing a curly weave, so I think that helps with the coverup...but nah, you cannot see any braids or braid parts at all with my invisible part. (It IS truly invisible.) I did it myself, not a drop of glue. I'll post or PM you a pic. Only a wee bit of baby hair is out in the front b/c my hair is fine and I'm scared of it being pulled out by braiding and tugging. I just slick this part down, tie it for 15 minutes, and it's good to go, and perfectly blended. I've had this weave in for 6 weeks now and truth be told, it could stay in for another month and still look nice. This is with weekly washings and daily sprays of a water/conditioner mix too. It's a GREAT protective style, but yea the invisble part weave isn't always invisible, gotta be careful!

Funny comment from my niece this weekend. She asked her Mom, "Why does Auntie 91 have a kitchen all over her head?" DEAD
