I just don't understand it.
We all know that Freemsaonry is older than BGLOs. But why do young Masons/Stars feel such a need to be better or compete with BGLOs? I have seen members from these groups rocking t-shirts and jackets similar to Greek paraphernalia. They are getting into heated debtaes with Greeks as to how elite they are and how much "info" they have on Greeks.
What's up with this?

Why does it happen... I'll give you my view from 10,000 feet above answer
We emulate what we admire and envy, regardless of our substance, and regardless of the substance of that thing admired.
Plain and simple. From black people in hip hop idolizing mafia moguls, to white people trying to "slum it in the hood", to ZTAs stepping, to service orgs, academic orgs, non-D9 orgs, co-opting D9 culture... seismic movements in populations might be due to admiration and/or envy.
It is something we are susceptible to at all points in our life, but I would suggest we are least susceptible to it the older we get... you don't see older masons competing with BGLOs or vice versa.
The irony of admiration is that it's almost never an internal process. We just don't admire ourselves for being ourselves... we only seem to admire others for what we perceive them to be, and what we perceive ourselves not to be.

^^^ like this... but Ill take it further to say is it admiration/envy or is it about what works.
When you think about it BGLO have had a 100 years or so to figure out what works with it comes to publicizing, branding, making your organization apealing etc. When you look at other organizations who seemingly emulate BGLO "culture" you have to wonder are they specifically saying we are trying to be like "the greeks" or the greeks found out what works on campus and we are going to do what works...
or is this what you mean but admiration...
OR *thought just popped in my head*
Could what we think of as BGLO culture be more of Black culture in general and it was just claimed by a subset.
I dont know.. I think I'm just rambling at this point hoping something will stick..lol

Masonry is older than BGLOs, it seems probable (to me) that if there was really a compelling need to be marketed and branded as a function of growth and survival that Masonry would have done it first.
But honestly, what the culture is and has become, is not vital to growth or survival, anymore than ZTA really needed to be in the step show, or that rappers really need to have some sort of gangsta appeal. That's not to say culture itself isn't important, I'm saying the snap shot of what the culture is right now is not necessarily important to the orgs.
I'd argue it's not really about what works, it's about what appeals. You don't need to do step shows, calls, probates, hand signs (etc.) to be effective in a mission. Plenty of non-Greek organizations and even some Greek ones (WGLOs) do fine without any of it. People emulate it because it appeals. What people want is the appeal...
Think of it like this... how many black people want to be President now? How many of them are willing to travel the path that Obama did, do all the work he did, all without the assurance of success, JUST for the opportuntity to try decades down the road?
Some of what the problem is, is rooted in our collective culture of "Instant Gratification". I want, what I want, right now. It's not just BGLOs, it's everybody.
