Some folks were raised in a certain faith and haven't ventured out despite certain serious philosophical roadblocks within the church. For example, I've known Baptists who, during their own journey, stopped believing in the Trinity...but continued to identify as Baptists. I've also known a great many Catholics who have major problems with some of the very cornerstones of Catholic doctrine (clerical intercession, absolution, deification of Mary) and yet do not disassociate with the denomination.
My question to YOU is: can you honestly say that you agree with every single tenet of the doctrine of your denomination? Do you take a "2 out of 3 ain't bad" approach with these things or do you require a stricter standard for your agreement with your church's teachings? Do you think it matters?

Honestly, I'm path of least resistance. I was raised Methodist and still am Methodist primarily because nothing earthshattering has come up that would make me uncomfortable continuing in this denomination. I don't agree with all aspects of the Methodist faith but those same "reservations" would exist if I switched to another Christian denomination so for me it doesn't matter. I will say that I could never be Catholic. Aside from the "extra" rules, I just don't believe in revering an earthly deity (the Pope).

'91, how you going to put that out there and take it back, ROTFL!
I can say I was raised Baptist and the church I attend in my hometown with my family is Presbyterian. To me, it's whever I recieve the word. Sure, there are little differences here and there, but the big picture is John 3:16. The only two demoniations I could never really get with is Catholic for the same reasons that '91 said, and Church of Christ. I've gone to some of their bible studies and Sunday services, and some of the things they percieve about women just doesn't sit right in my soul with me. It really doesn't.

Was raised in a Pentecostal/Baptist/Evangelical blended doctrine. Seriously considering Lutheran at this point. In a non denom right now as I am led on my spiritual journey.
I've done a lot of praying and research. I've learned so much about Christian denoms. More stuff than I think I wanted to know. lol Now in the process of attending churches and getting a feel of what's best for both my and hubby's spiritual needs.
Honestly, Leja it's been a crazy process. I mean you're like...wait this doesn't make sense. But what if Im wrong. What if I misinterpreted what I am now finding...well I've always did it that way so it feel comfortable... It's definately a life changing process. I've been down this path for quite some time. I am now very secure in my decision.

thanks, mamcita. Venture a reply? I can't because I don't follow a doctrine - and I don't belong to a church...*Kanye Shrug* Why?? Because of THIS. My thing is - IF I were to SUBSCRIBE MY LIFE - BET MY SOUL in anything, I gotta be ALL in. Am I expecting too much? I'ont know - we're only talking about ETERNITY though. There's SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much to chose from! EVERYBODY thinks that they are right. What if only one is? What if they are ALL wrong? See, I don't have commitment issues..I just gotta be SURE - like even more sure than picking a husband...ROFLMAO! The consequences are just a wee bit more severe, LOL!!

I wasn't raised with any particular doctrine. My parents were from two different dominations. As I become an adult, I identified more with Church of God In Christ. I do not agree with all of the doctrinal teachings but I really appreciate the emphasis on holiness as a lifestyle. I've attended Baptist churches (and been called some ugly things by my pentacostal counterparters) and found more warmth and love. I don't necessarily agree with the attitude that God forgives so just do you and ask for forgiveness later. I guess I would be Bapticostal lol

WOW great Thread
I am very much a MAN who believes in GOD, I was born & raised as a Baptist (Missionary Baptist/Southern Baptist, & Baptist USA) I have also in my life joined a Apolstic Church, AME Church, Methodist Church, I even also studied Islam & almost joined the Nation of Islam while I was in College
But I am now Pentacostal (Holiness/Sanctified) - C.O.G.I.C - Church of GOD in Christ & I have been since 1999
I have by far grown the most Spiritually, learned more about my Faith, GOD, The Holy Bible, Praise, Worship, Tithing, etc I am truly being Spirtually fed & I have developed a personal relationship with GOD who is the head & center of my life & his son, my LORD & Savior, Jesus Christ, who was born, died for all of our sins, rose after 3 days, & is yet to return again soon because he left a Comforter, for us until his return The Holy Spirit/Ghost!
Also I do agree with 100% of ("ALL") of the C.O.G.I.C Doctrine especially the basis of my faith which is....
Our Affirmation of Faith
We believe the Bible to be the inspired and only infallible written Word of God.
We believe that there is One God, eternally existent in three Persons; God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.
We believe in the Blessed Hope, which is the rapture of the Church of God, which is in Christ at His return.
We believe that the only means of being cleansed from sin, is through repentance, faith in the precious Blood of Jesus Christ and being baptized in water.
We believe that regeneration by the Holy Ghost is absolutely essential for personal salvation.
We believe that the redemptive work of Christ on the Cross provides healing for the human body in answer to believing in prayer.
We believe that the baptism in the Holy Ghost, according to Acts 2:4, is given to believers who asks for it.
We believe in the sanctifying power of the Holy Spirit, by whose indwelling, the Christian is enabled to live a Holy and separated life in this present world, Amen.

Thatque, you are aware that COGIC teaches against secret societies, lodges, fraternities/sororities, right? Yes I am aware that in some areas and/or Jurisdictions that there is a negative concept or preception regarding Masonic Lodges, Fraternities & Sororities but lets clarify that C.O.G.I.C Doctrine does not "Teach" againist but there are areas that address oaths & obligations but that is also based on things that are in the Old Testament and referenced in the New Testament.
But a lot of times when we see, hear and/or notice certain things that we need to look into it & find out exactly what is the reason and the source of the information as well as the validity of the information

Ybut lets clarify that C.O.G.I.C Doctrine does not "Teach" againist I brought this up because you said you agree 100% with the church's doctrine. In reviewing the church's history (and the handbook) you will find that there are specific teachings against fraternities/sororities. I understand that we have to search for ourselves, hence why I will not say I agree with 100% of what any doctrine teaches. The quoted part from you simply isn't true. I'm not sure which jurisdiction you are in but please know that this: there are still bishops and pastors who very much teach against fraternities, sororities, lodges, etc. not just oaths and obligations.

Humbled, do you wear pants? Yea I do but not all the time. I was trained that women don't wear clothes of men. I was also trained to wear no make-up, only can wear clear finger nail polish, skirts have to be below the knee length and lower, no tank tops, absolutely no split (grandmother sews them all closed) always have to wear stockings (summer, winter, fall, spring). Dad is apostolic so I absolutely can't cut my hair.... so much more...

I was just curious. So do you consider pants the clothes of men? SN: This isn't the only reason why there is a teaching against pants.

Yes there is some Old School, Old Fashion, Out Dated traditions and/or teachings but again that does not make it Church Doctrine! Is it right? No but we do understand why it is said and/or done!
For the record I have been a part of two seperate Jurisdictions - Sothern Illinois - Bishop Cawthown & Central Georgia Bishop C.D Owens (yes the former Presiding Bishop before the Late Bishop G.E. Patterson)
So in closing this discussion is similar to the same one that I have in Masonic lodges....
CUSTOM & TRADITION vs THE LAW
TEACHINGS/TRADITIONS vs CHURCH DOCTRINE
YES there is a difference!

JA, this is so serious because you have people teaching you will go to hell for these things. That's why I asked clarification from TQ and HS. I get what TQ is saying and don't totally disagree but depending on where you are and which church handbook they are using, these things are taught as doctrinal. I was in the choir at a COGIC church and it was made extremely clear that if you had "painted nails" you could not sing in the front row. People would be set for solos and forget to change their polish- we would have to change up everything or have the person stand in such a way the congeration really couldn't see them. During one rehearsal, one young lady (who was new to Christ) was told that she was going to hell because she had on pants and red nail polish. The girl didn't go back to church for months because she couldn't afford to buy new clothes (dresses/skirts). Don't get me wrong, I understand the reasoning behind these teachings but really we need to get away from teaching this as sound doctrine. I wish people would be as honest as TQ and say "this is what we prefer" or "this is the custom." The no pants thing is actually located in the women's handbook (the very last sentence).
