YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!! Finally -LoL. I was actually waiting for a thriving thread like this...yep, yet again. I had my LAST perm March 09. I decided to go natural because I was VERY curious as to what my ALL natural hair texture is so I have refrained from heat as well. I tried to grow it out by slowly cutting out the perm but my natural hair has a personality that takes over so I just cut ALL of my perm out about 2 weeks ago and prior to that I had my hair dresser cut it but she still had some straight pieces going on and it was not a good look. My hair looked confused -LoL. So I took liberty into my own hands and cut any and EVERY straight piece I saw. Yeah, I know I butchered myself but I've been wearing my hair in kinky twists and half sew-ins (braid my own hair in the front). So I figured since I am keeping my hair in all these "protective" styles and haven't really had access to my hair I might as well BC'd and so I did. I currently live on Youtube, Black Hair Care Media Forum and Long Hair Care Forum...and a few others. I am a recovering PJ BUT I have purchased Miss Jessies Buttercremes, rapid recovery and Curly Meringue. She currently have a buy one get one free sale which is the ONLY time I will ever purchase her products because they are pricey yet plentiful and you can't beat the moisture. I have also looked into shampoo bars and Qhemet Bioliogics. I do A LOT of research and experimenting on the weekends because I REFUSE to be a crazy looking "natural." Keep your ish well groomed and MOISTURIZED. That is the key to avoid breakage because some natural hair is very dry. I will not bore OOA with all of my discovered Hair Care Knowledge and Experiences so feel free to PM. I love talking about this stuff

I was in the same boat as you Chal...then I got over it. Each week my hair can be shorter or longer or bigger or flatter depending on the style and it doesn't even phase me. Now I wish I had never held on so tight to having length before.

I didn't read this whole most of much of this thread, but the fact that this is a topic again? It just shows me I had no clue just how big a deal black women's hair was. I mean I knew it had signficance, but I never would have guessed that it got that deep when it cames to Natural vs. Perm.

I'm determined to turn this into a hair thread pointed in another direction (since yall insist on having yet another damn hair thread)!
So...instead of calling yall punks I am going to be daring and call every single last one of you INSECURE!!!! Prove me wrong damnit!

CONGRATS TO ALL YOU LADIES WHO HAVE GONE NATURAL!!!! I am so excited. *Tear* I remember the first thread on this topic that I made back on the old OO. There were very few of us with natural hair back then. The circle has grown gracefully! Kudos! I'm six years in as of this past Nov. I am rocking straightend tresses right now mostly through flat iron. On special occassions I have it pressed. My first year my hair grew very long--about to my shoulder blades ends (straightened) I couldn't believe it. I was in awe. However, I cut it that day. Sometimes I wish I would have worn it long for awhile, but I hate dealing with too much hair in general. Most often I am asked what I did that first year. NOTHING. LOL That's the key too longer hair. I did th BIG CHOP! So I would just wash, grease, put on my large earring, lipstick and go. THE ABSOLUTE BEST. I FELT SO FREE!!!!!! Woohoo. Then I let it grow out and I started wearing full head combs pulling it back. Once it got longer enough I wore a bun and had twists like once. Lastly, I wore pony tail. Other than that I washed at least twice a week. I greased the scalp and oiled the end with vitamin E. My hair grew thick and long easily because I never put heat in it. I didn't clog it with products and I washed it regularly. After that first year I did so much with my hair. It has never grown that long again. So if you want lengthy hair in a significantly short amount of time you will have to sacrifice styling for some time to get desired results. A site I found most helpful is www.motowngirl.comI LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS SITE! IT HELPED ME ALOT. Also www.nappturality.comWARNING: This site is very afrocentric. View may be very strong. Toes may be stepped on. You may not feel comfortable if you do not consider your transition a spiritual journey. However, I found some really helpful content there especially on dealing with how to handle folks views about you, now that you've made a change. I wish you all THE BEST ON YOUR journey into the world of natural hair care.

Well you know the big chop is not as easy as it sounds. Even you admitted you shed a tear. I cried. Like literally cried. I thought I looked like a boy, because well in some aspects I did. LOL However, I went home...cried it out a bit...went to sleep...next day...found the chance to get the biggest most beautful earring ever...got me some new lip stick/lip gloss colors ...and I never felt better. Man that was the BEST time in my journery, because really...it took very little work to do my hair. Wash...dry...style and go...under 10 minutes! LOVED IT LOVED IT LOVED IT!!! But mentally it's hard. Insecurity...yes, but for good reason imo. GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO DIVA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So proud of you. I am sure you are exuding much confidence and mad strength right now! So proud of you! Exalt Chal read my mind... I STAY on the hair boards, but I'd still like to know what the Old Head Naturals of OOA do to maintain. BTW: I did it. I hadn't had a relaxer in 10 months, and I cut of the straight hair last night. I did my Big Chop!

Hmm, Even though I had a decent length of hair before I self-BC'ed, I didn't cry.
Just didn't happen. Maybe part of that was because, on one level, I DID see my going natural as part of a spiritual journey. It was part of waking up, embracing my consciousness, starting a holistic health journey, etc (I was embracing my current level of vegetarianism at the same time).
It worked for me; however, I'll always say YMMV.

Also, since I did my BC and I know this may sound crazy but because I want my hair to grow back longer, faster and healthy I eat A LOT of vegetables now, jucing and er'thang because I read it helps - LoL...and it shows. My hair is indeed growing and my skin is flawless. I don't do much to my hair but spritz it every day and oil my scalp once a week maybe. That's it! No chemicals and LOTS of water -internally and sprayed (mixed with glycerin and rosemary oil) on my kinky twists. Really simple.

I think Madea and I BC at a time when it was not so popular. There is so much support out there now---and so many people have been going natural nowadays. It's a lot different on the psyche, but still I believe it's a challenge.
My hair was standard shoulder length or maybe a little longer at time permed. However it was never as thick or length as my first year natural.
Well actually my mom said it was when I was a child. I haven't seen any pictures to prove it. LOL

Yeah, there is a whole cult and A LOT dedicated to "natural hair"...T-shirts, hats and ENTIRE stores that sale ALL natural products for ALL natural hair. It's a beautiful thing. I'm loving the journey because I'm learning my hair and contrary to what I though, it's actually very managable...you make it work. Not to mention YOUTUBE has a whole bunch of ladies on their giving product reviews, tips and demonstration on how to use the products and different ways to style your tresses. There is soooo much support. I'm glad I did it
