Yeah Hyp. Today was my first time watching anything related to it. Hell they filmed it LIVE in Columbia,MO. A Iota friend of mine was the DJ there, he told me the AKA's won, but he didn't tell me everything.....now I found out all this. Craziness.

I agree 100%. To show stepping for what it truly is will give perspective to those who are new to it. What it could also do is give perspective to those wishing to compete...thereby giving them some insight needed to make their show better. Maybe. You might have missed what I wrote earlier, but one thing I mentioned is that the judge's score card created it's own truth... that even if in reality the ZTAs hadn't won... the score cards established that they did and therefore it was truth - performance notwithstanding. There will be little, if any, perspective lended to them. They will continue to believe (win, lose, or draw) they have equal share in a franchise for which they have no understanding or true appreciation. How about we enter these competitions with confidence that they will be judged by actual merit (i.e. execution, creativity, and originality) by knowledgable judges? I know, I know... that requires judges that have actually SEEN step shows before... maybe even participated in them. People who know an ORIGINAL step when they see it, as opposed to an original team. Having a MIAKA step team would be novel too Cam... somehow though I don't think that novelty would translate into style points. We do actually have to draw lines - let's not pretend this is a free for all, and that soon we'll have little green martian step teams flapping and slapping their tentacles in unison. The Sprite Show incorporated at least 2 of their step shows since 2008. I didn't even see anything new. Their only hope is youtube and stepshows.com.

from the purseforum:
Has anyone heard about this? Just saw it on CNN. Sprite annually holds a step off for the sororities/fraternities and traditionally, it is an event for African American sororities/fraternities, the divine 9. This year a caucasian sorority entered (Zeta Tau Alpha) and won. Supposedly it caused outrage in the black community. After the step off a "scoring discrepancy" was found and they awarded first place to Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority as well...so now Zeta Tau Alpha and the AKA's share the title.
In my opinion, its racist for the black community to be in outrage. This is 2010 and it's reverse racism. If the caucasian sorority won, then they won fair and square, just stop complaining and come back better next year right? However, now that I watched the videos of each team on you tube I don't feel the Zeta Tau Alpha's did that well...not even well enough to tie with the AKA's, as they weren't as sharp.

To hope that we would get D9 judges, judging mostly D9 groups, in a competition that is meant as an advertisment for a multinational corporation, and after a non-D9 group won and caused all this free publicity is naive at best.
Also, to assume that these chicks, who just won $100,000, will not seek outside help is equally naive. They KNOW that they have a chance to compete and just like DeLa Hoya/ Mosley, the rematch has a following and will be televised. I wouldn't be surprised if Sprite paid someone to help them come up with original steps!! I'm just sayin....
A MIAKA step show might actually be novel enough to win a show although i woudln't be sure whether they would perform in the male or female category. If some obviously gay shems got out there and "hit the shit" (pun intended), they could pull it off. LOL!

Youtube has been immensely helpful to seeing the full spectrum of what's gone on here.
For example, youtube shows video when the results were announced. And what is obvious to any observation is that the crowd begins booing the moment the AKAs are announced as 2nd place winners (shame on you Dana Kelley). The comments have been eye opening too. It's exactly what I said it would be, now THEY are telling US what is and isn't step, and what is and isn't relevant. Suddenly they are authorities on the matter.
What is tragic if not humerous however is listening to these newcomers to "step" saying how tradition and culture are irrelevant all the while praising those who mimic it without knowledge or understanding (the brace, the march, the tail setting it owt, I could go on and on). No matter though.
Having watched footage of the ZTAs and their previous shows one thing becomes obvious... tradition and culture are actually PARAMOUNT to stepping. So much so that if the AKAs really are doing this reality show with the ZTAs I am actually glad for it. Let them step against each other again. In addition to whatever they create, the AKA team will have a wealth of knowledge in excess of 100+ years across hundreds of chapters to pull from to put together their show. The ZTAs? Well they won't be able to recycle their last 2 years of step shows as they did for this competition will they? I wonder what happens when they actually have to create their own steps? Pehaps novelty is exposed as novelty then isn't it? Perhaps mimicry and lack of originality becomes painfully obvious then.
I'd be surprised if they weren't downloading every NPHC probate they can get their hands on for help. LOL! When watching the finally, I said that if they had done like a step off to decide the winner, uh yeah. Hands down we know you would have one because with a Step Off, you come up with something that moment. My sorors could do that because of the tradition behind our orgs. ZTA, eh, not so much.

That is what I thought was wayyyy out there. I can't judge gymnastics because I don't know it. I mean if they wanted celebrity judges, each of our orgs. have celebrities in them. They could have done that. Did Chili even go to college? But alas, this is what happens when you participate in something that isn't put on by or in conjunction with an org. that knows all about what you're doing.

Which means it wasn't fair in the first place, which I do believe my soror Prissy did say the guy who made "Stomp the Yard" did say once he saw them, he was going to make sure they made it all the way, to paraphrase. It's listed in one of the pages of this thread.
AND, others saw it wasn't fair either this go round, hence the booing in the crowd and the big uproaor afterwards.

To hope that we would get D9 judges, judging mostly D9 groups, in a competition that is meant as an advertisment for a multinational corporation, and after a non-D9 group won and caused all this free publicity is naive at best. Believing that we have no leverage at all is what is truly naive. They marketed the step show with African American teams prominently displayed for a reason. THEY are the draw. You made note of the controvesry. Ask yourself, do you think anyone is interested in seeing the ZTAs step against the Omega Moos? Would YOU help them Cam? If not - why do you think ANYONE else would? LOL - why would a fellow Greek even remotely entertain something this sublimely ridiculous? Cam, isn't there a reason why, when we first became aware of the MIAKAs, that we all felt like it was supremely inappropriate? Do you recall what the objection was? Weren't they trying to appropriate (by mimicry) culture and tradition that belonged to AKAs?
I guess that's part of what I'm just not getting. Lining up according to height (or function), and having probate shows, line jackets, etc... it has had just as much media exposure as stepping has... yet no one seemed to think that the AKAs forfeited their traditions and culture due to the unstoppable forward onslaught of "commercialism" to MIAKAs. But now... anyone who gets up and slaps a few body parts in unison has just as much agency in Stepping as the D9? Is that really all it takes? Just mimic and you're in it? (it rhymed on purpose I'm hitting y'all with the 2010 Johnny Cochran)

You made note of the controvesry. Ask yourself, do you think anyone is interested in seeing the ZTAs step against the Omega Moos? No, I agree that no one wants to see ZTA vs Omega Moo. Sprite is counting on our greed to keep us in the competition which will, as you pointed out, keep people watching. Compete with the outside groups or step aside because judging by the conversations on OO, them being in the contest should be grounds for us bowing out. Would YOU help them Cam? If not - why do you think ANYONE else would? I would not. Then again, i'm a grown man with a good job, family, school, etc...and wasn't fond of this event from the jump. An undergrad or someone who is looking for some supplemental income? Yeah, they would. You think they wouldn't? If the right amount of money was offered I'm sure someone or a group of someone's would help. MiAKA's were insanely rediculous and I don't know of any group D9 or otherwise, that condoned their attempt to usurp AKA's entire persona. Having said that, AKA never made that part of their culture available to outsiders. Many of those traditions and cultural expressions adopted by the MiAKA's has always been uniquely AKA. Stepping is different. We have taught others to do it and allowed it to be performed by everyone from youth groups, to church groups. to non-Black groups. So when Sprite comes around offering a grip of cash...why wouldn't they (non-D9) orgs come out. And since this is a publicity campaign for Sprint/MTV, why wouldn't they toss in a few non-BGLO groups. Y'all have seen Real World! You KNOW the participants are selected because of their potential to cause conflict in the house. Do we lose all ownership of stepping? No. But if we continue to participate in this challenge, we will lend more credibility to it. Oh, yeah. And if this was just D9....It would probably last a year or so and then fizzle out. Sprite/MTV knows this. So once again, we can either continue to participate with outsiders or we can bow out on principle. We can't just continue to participate as long as we win.

Sprite/MTV knows this. So once again, we can either continue to participate with outsiders or we can bow out on principle. We can't just continue to participate as long as we win. Having WGLOs in an NPHC step show is any less ridiculous? And I don't quite get what you mean when you say AKA never made that part of their culture available to outsiders. Their colors are known to "outsiders", the MIAKAS co-opted it. Their Ivy Stance is well known. The MIAKAS co-opted that. Probating is a widely known phenomena. They co-opted that. Their level of espionage in gathering this was not more insidious or crafty then someone filming a step show and learning how to step. So if it follows that we have given away step by doing it in public, why hasn't AKA given license to the MIAKAs? Rhetorical question. The answer is that NEITHER was given away, they were co-opted.
As far as NPHC step shows we can participate in any way we want, as long as WE set the rules. No one sets the rules for us, or sets what's acceptable or allowable, which is part of what makes the lack of protest to the final outcome counterintuitive. If we conclude that evening by simply saying, well our leadership shouldn't have gotten us into it, how does that address an unjustified outcome?
It is an ancillary argument to say, well if it had been a black org there wouldn't be all this protest - because the likelihood is, if it had BEEN a black org they wouldn't have WON so there wouldn't have BEEN a need to protest. They can't have the argument both ways.

AKA's don't go around teaching church groups to Ivy Stance or dress them in P&G, etc... Yet, groups do go around teaching non-BLGO's to step. So....that's what I meant by "Making available".
If this is a matter of principle....if this is a matter of "us" owning "our" cultural property (stepping) then why were we responding to a call from Sprite/MTV to do a step show that we neither owned nor had a hand in facilitating?
Why did we continue to compete once we KNEW that this was not a NPHC exclusive competition?
We can end the convo about the scoring and results because it's moot. We know that this is entertainment and MTV/Sprite don't owe us shit. They are using us to sell soda and bad tv.

LOL - Cam did we TEACH them how to play rock and roll or did they study us? Did we TEACH them jazz or hip hop or did they study us? Your exception doesn't really address what I'm talking about, if past is prologue (as it often is) us teaching youth groups is irrelevant, they were going to learn it eventually anyway (the unstoppable commercialism right?)
First, I would LOVE to know what our leadership was told about this program. It is speculation that they did or didn't know of non BGLO participants. For all we know Sprite could have given a basic pitch, implying it was just your standard Step Show elevated to a national scale (as their advertisements CLEARLY suggested). So I guess I'm saying - do you KNOW that our leadership wasn't led to believe that they had a hand in facilitating this show?
We can only speculate why - no one knows.
It's really not moot, but I'll drop the point because it's not one that can be argued.
