I noticed most of the choirs at my church have stopped this practice--except the Senior Choir.

No, my choir does not march in. It needs to because as the Deacons are starting devotion, the choir members come from the side doors to the choir stand. I think that is sooooo tacky. Marching in adds life to the devotional period.

We don't march in. But I agree with OS. We are raggedy coming in the choir stand now. And we never came in on We've come this far by faith!! Our processional songs were the business!

Our choirs do not march in (we have about 8 different choirs). My church is pretty big and they would be tired by the time they get from the door to the choir stands.

Aww Frozen, they can march in. Choir directors don't want to take the time to work on it. They just want to work on new songs so they can sound like the radio Chal said. My choir director was so lazy she didn't even want to work with the Ushers on their annual march. I NEVER!!!

Hey! I'm a choir director and I am far from lazy. We don't sound like the radio even though we do sing a lot of stuff that's out there. But we also do arrangements of hymns and anthems. I don't think choir directors are in charge of marching though for every aux in the church.
OS, where do you suggest choirs get music from if not from the radio?

Kingdelta, my choir director is LAZY. My comment was not dirceted at YOU, it was meant to convey that I think choirs don't march in because the choir director is LAZY. My badd, if I stepped in your cool-aid. I'm sorry. I don't mind you guys sounding like the radio, just spend some time working on bringing the choir in in a uniform manner rather than allowing them to tip in while they think they are unnoticed. Once again, didn't mean to throw that rock at you.

Our choirs automatically go and sit in the choir stands before the service starts and they remain there during the whole service.

ok, let me clarify, because i don't want to offend or step on any toes.
1) We never came in on "We've Come This Far." We did, however, march from our old sanctuary to our new building singing that song for our first service inthe new church.
2) By radio, i didn't mean gospel radio. I meant those songs that sound like somebody took them off Hot 107 FM and stuck the word Jesus in it to make it a church song.
3) The tacky walking/straggling in. Major no no. It's obviously tacky and it is very disrespectful if you ask me. If I'm in the middle of my devotional praise, i don't want to be distracted by random bodies in my periphial. Especially those that don't know how to make a quiet entrance.
4) Some choir directors (not all) are lazy as OS said. They don't want to take the time to make the necessary arrangements to make things look right. I think marcing in is cool. I like to see it.

And I agree with. My choir is raggedy. We sing two songs before offering. One Sunday one of the choir members was putting on her robe during offering and coming up in the choir stand. I will shut you down on my watch. That is just out of order! Iove that comment about putting Jesus in a song to try and make it sound like it should be in church. I love marching in too and wish my pastor hadn't cut it out!

The processional and the opening hymn actually set the tone for service. I don't see it as pomp and circumstance. Leave that for the praise team!

Girl half the choir doesn't come in until after the praise team. That goes for the congregation too. Our praise team is really kind of bad. Good by most standards but bad in terms of attitude and spirit.

Mid range- 400-600. And that' s active members not just the ones on the roll.

My church USED to be maybe 1000+ members, but as you know, sometimes "drama" tends to pop off in church. So now we have maybe 100-300 in services. My favorite choir used to march OUT to "We've Come This Far". The senior choir would sometimes march in to "Marching to Zion", and it seems like it would take them about 45 minutes to get into the choir stand! Personally, I miss the marching in.

my church is a bit smaller. 300 - 500 members. 200 - 300 active, the rest holiday members.
i enjoy the small intimate feel. I'm not sure i'd be comfortable in a mega church where pastor may or may not know my name. My former pastor, before he passed, he knew everybody and everything. He was family. Our current pastor, he fits right on in.
