My husband was my first really serious relationship so it is my only example.
I won't say he was controlling overall, but he had an annoying habit of shutting down when he was angry at me. He would literally stop talking to me for days. It drove me crazy, and he knew it. I would be crying and begging him to talk to me. Then it dawned on me...he didn't have the power to control my emotions, only I could do that. He still shuts down when he is angry, the difference is now I just go on with my life. He will talk when he is ready. I have noticed too that now that I don't react, his shut down time has decreased.

Like Bk said, whatever happens to you, you allowed it to happen. I personally never been in an abusive or controlling relationship (it seems I have a "smart ass mouth"...whatever) however I have seen the effects it can have on a person. The females I know personally in these situations have low self esteem and think they can't do better. But I'm on the outside looking in so I don't know.
