I'm a l'il confused. What exactly is voting for McCain supposed to solve in her child custody case? There is no child custody case. It is just a fear that she has that if we have a president in office who is in favor of supporting and extending gay rights, that one day it could make it too easy for him to gain custody, ESPECIALLY if he can get married legally... It may seem like a stretch as it did to me at first...BUT I am not a mother. I do not have an estranged husband. The father of my child is not gay and CRAZY. Therefore, i will not judge her choice...and who knows how I would feel if I were in her shoes...

I don't think it's so hard to understand that some black people wont vote for Obama. I dont think "doesnt vote for" and "doesnt support" are necessarily synonymous. If you don't agree with his positions and platform, then why would you vote for him, regardless of his hue? I'm fairly sure that my mother won't vote for him. He is Pro-choice. She will not vote for a Pro-Choice candidate. Yep, she voted for Bush. Do I necessarily agree? No. Have I talked to her about it? Yes. However, it is something that she feels very strongly about and I can not knock that nor do I have a right to question her choice. To her, that trumps alot of things that other people (even myself) may find more important. If our history as black people taught us anything is that we ALL have the same RIGHTS as anyone else. And we ALL have a RIGHT to vote for whomever and however we choose. There is no obligation. That's what the movement was about. Equality.
Will I vote for Obama? We'll see after I really hear what he's talking about and what McCain is talking about. I will also keep my eye on whomever each of them position around them and who silently backs them. I will research who funds their campaigns. I will pay attention to who they plan to nominate for appointments. While Im proud that he has made it this far and that it gives me more faith in Amerikkka, lipservice means nothing to me. I dont care what is said in a debate or in a commercial. I want to know what is going on behind the scenes and who each candidate is in "bed" with. You think gas is high b/c Bush wants it high? Nah, look who is benefitting from the economy. Bush's backdoor buddies (pun intended). The President does little with regard to ACTUALLY running the country.
My short answer: No. To me this still sounds like "you are obligated to vote for Obama b/c he is black". Yes, we owe great deference and respect for what our ancestors did and the fight they gave. However, I dont think the fight was necessarily to get a black person in the White House. The fight was for equality and that we be afforded the same rights and privileges as white people. So the fact that Obama is where he is, is accomplishment. But if someone doesnt agree with him, they dont agree and no amount of "history" is or should change that or make them feel "less black" or unappreciative of our history. I kinda find this odd b/c women put up a helluva fight for Women's Rights but Ive heard PLENTLY men, even on this board, say they would NEVER vote a women into office. Well, how is that different? So if it were Michelle Obama, would those same black men feel the same obligation to vote for her? Would we even have this conversation? With minor trepidation, Im going to say No.
If I vote Obama. That's my choice. If I vote McCain. That's my right and my choice. If I write in my own name. That's my right. If I abstain from voting. That's my right and choice too.
This is why I discourage folx from sharing who they support or plan to vote for because its really nobody's business. JMO.
P.S. If anyone is so inclined....please read Confessions of an Economic Hitman.

yo momma voted for Bush?!?! wow.... I would've fell out with my momma for a period behind that..... I fell out with a VERY good friend because he voted for Bush--we didn't even speak for a while. In hindsight, he regrets it--I think he was blinded by his pastor (he now is on this whole rampage about how "pastors need to keep politics out of church, I don't go to church for that". ). I agree--just like my friend's pastor, a lot of Black pastors pushed Bush in 2004. I know a lot of Blacks that voted for Bush.

President Bush has made damn sure that our Supreme Court is ultra-conservative, so any gay rights legislation that comes before them will surely be knocked down.
She also needs to pay close attention to her gubernatorial and legislative races in her area. THEY can do her more harm than Pres. Obama ever could in this area and others.

yo momma voted for Bush?!?! wow.... I would've fell out with my momma for a period behind that..... Rumor has it. But she will not confirm or deny. My dad says she did but again she will not confirm or deny. But I KNOW my mom and I know her stance on abortion. She and I went around and around about it but even still that's her choice Aces. Folx fought for us to have the right to vote whichever way we want to, not so that we will all be the same. And, I read the Unpopular Opinions, I will stand in my moms corner, regardless if I agree or not. I think that if Black folx are Democrat just because they are black then they are misinformed about the political process. Democrats use blacks and have always used blacks since Abe Lincoln. And, as so often the case, Blacks fall for the shaninigans. Prime example, hoopin' and hollerin' that Clinton was the first black president and look at how he is talking about us now....SMH....his ass is white. Always has been, always will be. At the end of the day, Dem, Rep they have THEIR OWN interests at heart.

I'd do the same publicly, and behind closed doors I'd challenge her position. I understand that, as black folk, we have to align with and vote for the fox - democrats, or the wolf - repubs, and we're the chickens. I get that. but, taking a historic perspective and approach, the democratic party has done more to help black folk than the repubs. ie, desegregating armed forces, voting and civil rights acts, etc. black folk are higher on the totem (however "low" that may be) and are more a part of the party vs. the republicans and their platform. Hell, after freeing the slaves and reconstruction efforts, black folk fell to the bottom of the republican agenda.

Perhaps but I guess to me its like when people say they dont like the Skins because they were the last to have a black player (DONT EVEN START WITH THE SKINS STUFF! WE HAVE A FEW MORE MONTHS x-( )...ummm...that was then, this is now. I guess I just feels strongly that we should analyze the candidates and their platforms individually, shed the party affiliation, and vote for whomever you think we best serve your interests.

Hell, after freeing the slaves and reconstruction efforts, black folk fell to the bottom of the republican agenda. The debates at Howard University that Tavis Smiley hosted are a perfect example. AT LEAST the Democrats showed up. ALL of the candidates were there. But at the Republican debates, I think only two or three showed up. Also, as I said in the other post I made about Dems/Repubs, a lot of the times we blame the Democrats, IMHO for "taking our vote for granted", and doing little after they come to our churches and/or neighborhoods. But IMHO, I don't really see Blacks putting a ton of pressure on the Dems to deliver anything in return for our vote.

I just believe that he will, at least, begin to get us out of this quagmire that we've been emersed in for the past eight years. Following, what many consider to be, the worst president in modern history, ain't hard to do. Hell, you or I could do a better job than dubya. Secondly, It is a fair statement as THE MAN WAS RE-ELECTED!!!!! Shame on Bush for the egregioius mistakes he made during his first term; we'll give him that. Buuuuuuuuut SHAME ON THE VOTERS who, after seeing the mistakes he made in his first term, RE-ELECTED this fool! Hell yeah they are partly to blame as they gave this man another shot at fucking up after watching him fuck up the first time! That, my dear, is the epitome of dumbassness. And I hold these voters partly responsible for the shit we're in now. There is simply NO WAY ANYONE who voted for Bush TWICE can sit up in my face and justify and defend why the re-elected this fool. Any attempt to do so will make them look just as foolish as the doofus they voted twice for. *steps off his soapbox*

I voted for bush, because he was at that time in line for what I believed and wanted. At that time, I was staying with my parents, had no bills and went to church 3 days a week. So his "conservative" stances stood well with me. Kerry's didnt. I wasn't for abortion (still not) or gay marriage (still not), and I had no fiancial worries then. So he was the choice for me. Its easy to look back and say "You voted for bush? Its YOUR fault this country is the way it is".....shrugs

And if you say "the War", then you'll be seriously refuted.**notices that Nupey has powered up by the useage of the red font** hmmm...72% of people polled give bush a poor approval rating. Kinda hard to argue with 72% of the population dog. And the 30% that think he's doing a good job I'm sure have either benefited from his policies, aren't affected by the recession (and yes we're in a recession) and/or are just plain dumb. I'd find it hard to believe that the majority of people that are "hating" on bush are doing so simply by what they watch on the 11pm news. Ok, we'll leave the attack on a soveriegn nation over supposed WMD's THAT WERE NEVER FOUND completely outta the equation. And we'll also leave out the small fact that the person responsible for 9/11 HAS YET TO BE CAUGHT as we continue to fight a war in afghanestan ( a two front war, essentially. read up on your military history as it's NEVER wise to fight a two front war). Yeah....we'll leave all that out.... now, to answer your question. Here's a few snipets of an article I read not to long ago: Bush Administration Fails to Jumpstart EconomyAs of May, 2005, there have been 893,000 jobs created over the first 52 months of the Bush presidency - a gain that is due solely to the 917,000 jobs created in the government sector that offset the 24,000 jobs lost in the private sector. Since the Great Depression, no other president who served at least 52 months has overseen a net loss in private sector jobs through this point. In addition to lack of job growth, real weekly and hourly wages have declined since the start of the recession. At a time when middle-class Americans are experiencing stagnant wages and vanishing benefits, CEO pay continues to rise. Numbers Contradict Bush's Claims of Economic GrowthIn the 2005 State of the Union address, Bush said that more Americans are going back to work and that the economy is growing and healthy. The numbers don't necessarily support this assumption. Job growth over the last 18 months has fallen short of administration predictions by 1,703,000—more than one-third fewer jobs than the president's Council of Economic Advisers said would be created. Present employment levels show only 119,000 more individuals working than when Bush took office in 2001, which is effectively a decrease in employment rates, as the total civilian labor force grew by more than two million workers in 2004 alone, according to the Department of Labor. Additionally, the most recent data from the Census Bureau show that the average income for middle-class households has dropped by $1,525 since its peak in 2000. The labor force participation rate—the percentage of people either working or looking for work—fell in Jan. 2005 to a seasonally adjusted 65.8 percent, the lowest rate since 1988. Bush Racks Up More DebtFor the third time in three years, Congress will have to raise the federal debt ceiling, thus increasing the government's borrowing authority by as much as $800 billion. According to the Washington Post editorial board, "the Treasury Department has been doing the governmental equivalent of scrounging for spare change in the couch cushions to pay its obligations. The deficits [the government] racks up year after year impede economic growth, burden future generations and force the United States to rely on foreign governments and investors," the Post reports. "Meanwhile, as the government has to pay more interest on its debt, it has less for health care, education and other programs." A Welfare Program for Big BusinessIn early October, Congress considered a $140 billion dollar tax bill that would provide a tax break to 276 large companies and special interest groups. Instead of using this money to help national financial worries, Congress has decided to give tax breaks to the rich and powerful. Bush's Budget Will Not Help EconomyAccording to the Associated Press, a non-partisan Congressional Budget Office study found that "the tax cuts and other policies President Bush proposed in his $2.4 trillion budget would probably have a minimal impact on the economy." Bush Attempts to Paint Rosy Picture of Struggling EconomyWhen speaking with a group of women small business owners on Jan. 9, Bush said that "unemployment dropped today to 5.7 percent," claiming that this "is a positive sign that the economy is getting better." Unfortunately, according to the Baltimore Sun, that is not the case. The Sun reported that underlying that positive number was "grim economic news—only a handful of new jobs were created and hundreds of thousands of discouraged people dropped out of the workforce." Under Bush: Surplus Dollars Turn Into Huge DeficitsAccording to the New York Times, the Bush tax cuts and the Medicare changes enacted this year alone will increase the national debt by $750 billion over the next decade. If the tax breaks are extended as expected, the total comes to $1.25 trillion over the the next ten years. Robert L. Bixby of the Concord Coalition, a bipartisan budget watchdog organization, told the Times, "In fiscal terms, there is no doubt in my mind that this has been the most irresponsible year ever." Bush Economy: Temporary Growth, Lasting DamageWhile George W. Bush has been touting good news on the economy, the picture is not quite so rosy, especially in the long term. The Boston Globe reports that recent economic growth is not "merely a lucky accident." According to the Globe, Bush's enormous military and security spending, and two of the largest tax cuts in the nation's history are likely to result in "short-term growth and long-term damage." The Globe describes the economic policies of the Bush administration as a "crude and destructive cocktail of stimulants." Bush Tax Cuts Lead to Largest Deficit Ever, Leaving Future Generations to Shoulder the BurdenGeorge W. Bush's 2001 assurance that his tax cuts "could happen without fear of budget deficit, even if the economy softens" have proven to be false, as the estimated $480 billion budget deficit this fiscal year will be the highest in U.S. history. if you wanna read more, here's the link... www.thetruthaboutgeorge.com/economy/
