That's my question as well, goldmine. Let's see what kind of answer we get. It shows a commitment and a fidelity to the traditions and spirit of the organization. It takes hard work and sacrifice to pledge. When we went through intake, we just paid our money, took a test, went through a ceremony, and it was over. We were not taught anything about the frat afterwards. I just cannot imagine joining a group with secret rituals and traditions and not being taught everything. I guess that it does not matter to some folks. If all you want to do is wear a shirt and do service, you do not need to learn tradition or gain additional knowledge. But for many young men and women, the tradition is very important. To me, joining MIP is like having an arranged marriage. You might end up with a good mate and may have a good marriage, but you missed out on learning about your mate. Pledging would be like dating. Sometimes things can get physical in a relationship, but we still make up and stay together in order to get married. But in the end, I am the High & Mighty APIL and I owe no one any explanation.

" A committment and fidelity to the traditions and spirit of the organization." I'll buy SOME of that, but what do you do AFTER the pledging is over? Relationships are forged AFTER your initiation is complete, or do you only intend to bond with those whom you were on line with? That might explain the low numbers of folks remaining active after their initiations are complete.
You don't learn EVERYTHING even during initiation. If you were not taught anything about your fraternity after you were initiated, that's the fault of your prophyte members and YOU! Did you take the time to learn anything afterward on your own? Likely not.
Pledging like dating? Who taught you that?

Likely not. Pledging like dating? Who taught you that? Of course marriage (Greek life) is better than dating (pledging). But dating is an important building block. As far as learning stuff, many older prophytes do not know a great deal because they are not out there charging up members like that. If you introduce yourself as a brother to anyone with 30+ years in a frat, you will probably get gripped instantly, with no questions asked. Most of those old guys are just happy to be recognized at that point.

What are you, 12? What organization is this? "Happy to be recognized?"
Maybe it's like that where you are a member but from my experience in Alpha, Masonic Lodge, Alumni Association, fuck...The local band consortium...I don't know of any organization where someone with 30 plus years gives a shit about the young guys recognition. Actually, many feel that the young guys are fucking up their organization.
They grip you without charge because they have real stuff on their minds. Trust me, you'll get it when you get there.

The 30+ year members will "grip" a younger member just out of courtesy, but "happy to be recognized," is a joke! They ain't givin' a damned if someone hot off the sands or 2-3....even 10 years in grips them or not...and will tell you so! LOL! I know the 25+ year brothers in my chapter don't give a shit about a newbie recognizing them or not! And let's not even talk about those 50+ year brothers of ours!! Some of them are more likely to curse you out if you are doing or saying something stupid and won't give a hoot about you "grippin'" them up! I can speak for myself....when I encounter neos or younger brothers, I greet them as a "welcome" and congratulations. If they don't approach me, I keep on walkin'!

Them older guys don't be getting no love like that. It's the youth who run the frat.
