(1) The thing that really bothered me about this thread was the fact that I was reading it with one contact in OMG how I have strained my eyes...! But also REALLY don't like the comparison of majors to justify GPA variance. If your curriculum is any type of decent it will require challenging course work for ALL majors and classes even those such as The Art of Basket Weaving and other Handmade Goods." I know my major/discipline was constantly look down upon due to labeling. But our program was one of the top in the nation. Also our department had a lot of history in the field in general. Our coursework was grueling. There were many nights that I literally considered walking off campus and never coming back. So a 4.0 in our discipline was just as valid as a 4.0 in maybe Biology Pre-Med or Engineering. Also I could say the same of many other disciplines around the university. (2) We are definitely in a era of degree inflation. Jobs that do not require higher education are demanding it as a minimum requirement. GTFOHWTBS! There is no way that the guy stacking boxes at Walmart should be forced to obtain a trade degree to secure the position. There is no way your secretary should be required to have a bachelor's. Why the hayle do your case managers need a damn 4 year degree? Why do general counselors need a masters? STOP PLAYING.. So due to degree inflation you will have more and more people going to college. Also the fact that there are 50 million programs push discriminated populations to consider college as a viable option. Level of education and income are more linked than they ever have been. I think the new "grade" of folks should be there competing for a piece of the pie just like the rest of everyone else. Anyone who feels otherwise seriously is on the verge of supporting a covert caste system. (3) On the checklist to discovering if you indeed have ghetto mentality lies the question of if you obsess over elite-ness. Folks who are truly elite do not need to broadcast it nor find ways to constantly compare themselves to others who are supposedly substandard in one way or another. but other than that...nice thread.

I’m constantly comparing my major (engineering) with my friend in communications because she brings it up. I’ve seen her curriculum and of course she’s required to take the same core requirements but other than that, she has electives. My engineering program is one of the top in the country. But when it comes to justifying GPA variance, it’s just what you said, “If your curriculum is any type of decent it will require challenging course work.” Her doesn’t because of Liberal Arts programs isn’t too good. If I want to discuss the range of difficulty within different majors, I’m not gonna talk about what college you’re in, but the work you’re required to do. I have another friend who’s in secondary education and REALLY works her butt off. I don’t feel the need to proclaim “Elite-ness” but when people try to compare, competitive way, then I can go into drill mode and really COMPARE

The classes for social sciences is difficult in that it (well in my case) causes you to really reflect on who you are, why and how these things impact you professionally. It's also hard to break yourself of judgements. People who say they don't judge are straight up lying. It's not until you are confronted with certain situations that you learn just how judgemental and firm you are in your beliefs. A life or death ethical choice is just as difficult a solving a calculus equation.

How can one not compare majors and GPA variances? So a Physics, Chemistry, or Engineering Major are on the same scale of difficulty as an English or Political Science major? The degree of difficulty physics is much higher than in English. Furthermore you are finding more Med School students who will major in English and will take the required courses for most med schools. They end up having higher GPA's than Biology majors and get the nod quicker.
Scientific or Specialized undergraduate degrees hold more weight. If they didn't the pay would be the same in most cases.

You simply don't understand do you? Your "alleged" pledging is such a SMALL part of your Greek experience you little turd! No one who's worth anything gives two schits about how long you claim to have pledged, and whether or not you were fool enough to allow someone to beat your dumbass with wood, bats, extention cords, whips etc. None of that means a damned thing if you are a non dues-paying, t-shirt wearing, car tag rockin' sorry sack! Foolish little people like you will live the rest of your miserable life out telling everybody "hey, look at me y'all, I pledged." It won't mean schit because no one will know whether or not you're telling the truth, moreover, they won't give a hoot in hell! I've said before, and I'll say again, if you really and truly PLEDGED (in the real sense of what the word means,) folks will know it. I guess that explains why you espouse much of the stupidity and ignorance you spew on here and any other forum you troll on the daily. If there is a chapter of whatever you are full of more fools like you, that is a chapter that is on its last leg! Why did I join a frat? I can guarantee that the vast majority of folks on this forum ask that same question about you!

I sort of cosigned APIL's response without clarification... but you gotta admit its a different type of college student now than it was 10 year or even 20 years ago (which is just 1990 good grief i'm getting old) and they have different interest and find different things appealing... Its my outside observations that BGLOs just adjusted to the their environment. I dont know if that was necessarily a bad thing. Its survival..

What appeals to college Greeks nowadays not withstanding, the initiation process is STILL the shortest amount of time a member of a fraternity or sorority spends in their Greek life, unless, God forbid, they pass away immediately following their initiation. I've been an Alpha for over 20 years. The weeks of initiation for me were the LEAST of my time in Alpha/becoming Alpha, as it relates to the years I have under my belt. That's the point I'm trying to make. Even someone who may have pledged for a semester or a year 40 or 50 years ago...that semester or year is minute compared to the 40 - 50 years they have in their respective org.

Ghetto mentality is NOT what sustains Omega at the undergrad level maybe others. Go ahead and think that if you want. Go undergrad at any chapter and not show up to a meeting. Not help out with Mandated programs. No pay your chapter dues. You will get slammed the fuck on your back for not holding up your obligation. Now ghetto mentality that ish. lol In Omega its harder being a bruh than becoming one. Don't get it twisted because we act a straight fool when we party.
Again as I stated before we pull from the socialites and intellectuals. A united front for a united people.

If our orgs are about what we CLAIM we are based on our foundations, it shouldn't sustain ANY of them!

If he is a DULY INITIATED brother of Alpha Phi Alpha, he is respected as such. Some idiots of course measure whether or not a brother is due respect based on a process. But go back up there, and read what I posted. Those same folks aren't likely to be involved in Alpha on any level beyond their "pledging." It is those members that I have NO RESPECT for! His process isn't doing a damned thing for Alpha! I have a sincere question for you. Why does the subject of someone's "process" seem to drive you so? Why are you so enthraled with it?
