Do you all think it is ok for gospel songs to be altered for a probate show? When my cousin crossed Delta, she and her line sisters sang I KNOW I'VE BEEN CHANGED, but instead of saying "angels in heaven have signed my name" they said "Delta Sigma Theta has signed my name!" I thought it was tight because they tore it up..but there were people who were not happy with them altering a gospel song. What do you think?

going over it in my head, and imaging some stellar vocals to go with it, i think it would SOUND good. However, I can understand why some would be upset. Because of the true meaning of the song, it seems somewhat blasphemous.

It vexes my spirit. As does people replacing Jesus/God from scripture with organization names. And yet we wonder why people say we worship organizations...

Even though in some cases, it sounds good, but I always feel strange about it. Therefor, I am not 100% on board with the concept.

When I was younger, our youth choir entered a competition sponsored by Quaker Oats. Several choirs did this. Altering any song for any reason is risky. Sometimes the new rendition works out fine and sometimes its just a mess.

Doesn't bother me in the least. I've altered a few. They have the best basis for good harmony!

Wow, the Bruhz have a number of "altered" Gospel based themes, but I think it is a more a manifestation of the tortured duality of Omega than anything disrespectful or idolatrous.
"Done signed my name" has been an Omega staple for at least 30 years, as have several others that have been been mentioned by Voudou. Shoot, there are some things that I sung while pledging that I did not realize were based on spirituals til I heard the tune in church.

I don't have a problem with it. Music is just that....music. Words make it a song. So if I change the words of a hymn to fit my purposes then, hey....it's no longer a gospel song.
Plus, most of what we sing are the spirituals and those, are struggle songs being sung in a struggle style. Think about the "Mainstream" version of hyms and the happier verses sung in "White" churchs as opposed to what is sung in the Black church. For example, when singing Amazing Grace, the most popular verse difference is:
White Church: "When we've been here 10,000 years, bright shining as the sun."
Black Church: "Through many dangers, toils, and snares I have already come."
So these songs are songs of struggle and the music carries that message. Its the words that give it real meaning though.

If non-gospel songs can be altered and turned into gospel I don't see the issue with going the other way.

I didn't need to see Chal's comments. Really didn't. Just for you, i'mma break it down a lil bit Weak - they didn't didn't change a word. just threw in a "Jesus" here and an "oh, Lord" there. Who Can I Run To - don't remember how they changed the verses, but on the chorus instead of saying "when I need love" they said "I need the Lord" Down Low - don't remember the verses here either, but instead of Dooooowwwwnn Low Doowwn Low, they said Jeeeeeeeesus Jeeesus

I don't think it's the use of a Gospel song that bothers me as much about this as the direct replacement of angels iin heaven with DST. I mean many Gospel songs (Kirk, Marvin, BeBe and CeCe) have been used to represent secular love for a person because the lyrics are vague enough that the redirection isn't offensive. This isn't that case.

I am usually not a nikki fan but I actually like this "your love" song is pretty catchy.
As far as gospel music at probates, I dont think it is a big deal. Gospel music today is just secular music with a different message so other than the words the lines altering, these songs still hold no spiritual value bc some of them never had value from jump.IMO ofcourse, and this doesnt apply to all songs
