yeah, and why didn't they just call it the Kung Fu Kid? He's not learning Karate. I had to read up on this because I was wondering why a Kung Fu artist is teaching someone Karate.

Boy, I swear - give a negah a education and lawd!! In the preview, he was being teased by the Asian kids....they called him the karate kid. I saw the Smith-Pinketts on Oprah the other day and all I'm saying is Jaden worked his lil ass off for this movie.

*GEEK ALERT! GEEK ALERT* 1. It's called Karate Kid yet they are practcing kung fu? 2. Jackie Chan is NOT a true martial artist and all true martial artists will tell you this. He is a student of Peking opera which includes MA for cultural relevance. 3. Fvkk Hollywood remakes. They fail miserably because they rely on modern movie stars and visual stimulation in the place of making an emotional connection through great story-telling. 4. Will and Jada are making a mistake on trying to break this kid into the action genre this early in the game. If this movie is a huge success (and I doubt that it will be, LOL) dude just may end up like the original KK, Ralph Macchio. That'd be some irony for your azz. 5. Fvkk Hollywood remakes. E.N.O.U.G.H. 6. No movie these days is worth the price of admission anyway. LOL. Bootleggin' like a mug! Okay I agree with most of this, but you gotta give Jackie some credit! At least he had some formal training in different martial arts at the Peking Opera School. Can't put him in the same category as Pat Morita...lol

LOL @ Blu Then you also gotta have a cameo by "Kreese" - The most hardcore dojo sensei ever seen on film: Fear does not exist in this dojo, does it? Pain does not exist in this dojo, does it? Defeat does not exixst in this dojo, does it? We do not train to be mericful - Mercy is for the weak!!

I can dig it! NO ONE CAN REPLACE KARATE KID!!! NO ONE!!!!!! YOU HEAR ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOOOONNNNNNNNNNEEE!!!! but Ima still go see this.

I dont see any Gen-Xers "holding on" to the past for any reason, certainly not to try to remain young. The problem ios that pop culture for Gen Y and Z has been sub-par and just plain boring. So the powers that be wanna try to reboot Gen X pop culture to capitalize on our youthful experiencs, and are doing a shitty job of it. I mean how hard is it create an ORIGINAL serial killer and not reboot Jason, Michael, and Freddy? How hard is it to creat an ORIGINAL coming of age story and give Daniel-san to Jada's-son? How hard is to make your own damned ORIGINAL music and recording artists and quit sampling, or trying to reboot Grace Jones or Madonna in the form of Lady Gaga?

I feel you Blu!
Adisa ROFL!!! Aint nothing new under the sun. The 80's stuff were revisions of something before.
Yall are right. But this really isnt a remake if there are different characters, right?

I seem to remember hearing this same stuff though....back when I was a kid and my uncle was saying, "Y'all's music today is garbage. Nobody plays an instrument, you steal other people's music and call it your own, men perm their hair instead of being proud of your Blackness, etc...."
We are getting old. I will be with Outtie....watching little Jaden get his Kung-Fu on.

I don't understand why everything is a remake. Why can't they just make the movie and call it something different? When I go in to see the remake of something I'm expecting an updated version with better special effects and all of that. I just end up asking myself "did that even happen in the original?" and wondering why they keep doing this to me.

They're remaking Short Circuit, Pirahna, The Birds, and Porky's. Apparently, the worst is yet to come.
hmm, thread idea

Adisa ROFL!!! Aint nothing new under the sun. The 80's stuff were revisions of something before. That's not entirely true, nor is it even the point I was making. The fact that people on this thread are excitedly going to see this KK reboot proves my point about why Gen-X stuff is being dug up and repackaged. $ $ $ $ $ $ $ $ $ $ $ $ $ $ Because today's generations don't have nearly as much innovation to create anything worthy of your and my $ $ $ $ $ $ $ $ $ $ $ It's not because Gen-Xers are afraid of getting old.

What old person watched "Voltron" and said "That ain't nothing but Our Gang"? Or watched "E.T" and said, "They stole that from Redd Foxx"?

Dude....this movie was GOOD!
The Warden and I went with my son and 3 nephews. Each of them (7, 9, 9, and 10) had a 32oz soda that they of course finished before the first 30 min of the movie and nobody moved! It was that good.
We saw it at a theater with a lot of 25-20's and those folks were clapping throughout the movie. You would have thought you were watching Rocky at a theater on Staten Island!

i saw it and it wasn't a true remake. The same story boy gets his ass kicked over a girl, but it was only called the karate kid for the money. It generated more publicity as a remake than as its own movie

I disagree....I believe it qualifies to be called a remake. Actually, I think it was probably how a remake should be done.
Luther Vandross "remade" Superstar by The Carpenters. It didn't sound exactly the same as what Richard wrote or as Karen sang it but it was a remake with Luther style. Plus, if they didn't call it a remake, they would have gotten sued since the movie was structurally the same.

No but the framework of the movie is much more than just the premise. This story actually follows the framework of the original...down to the "Break [sweet] the leg" comment in the final tournament.
