Winston-Salem, NC -- A sorority at Winston-Salem State University has been suspended for allegedly hazing new members.
According to university spokesperson Nancy Young, the Gamma Phi Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority is suspended from campus for ten years effective immediately.
"They will not be recognized as an organization on this campus," said Young.
Young said the organization violated university policy. She said administration received a complaint in March, which prompted the investigation that led to the suspension.
The decision was to go with ten years because this was a sorority that had been suspended once before," said Young
Young said Delta Sigma Theta came out of suspension for alleged hazing in 2002.
"There was no physical hazing, but there were some actions that constituted hazing," said Young. "We just are not going to allow violations of our polices or of our university beliefs and values.
News of the suspension has some freshman thinking twice about which organizations they'll consider joining.
"I had been looking into pledging and doing research on the different sororites," said Demetria Alexander. "It kind of turned me around, like, wow, do I want to pledge any more?"
Freshman Victoria Thorne said, "It makes a whole lot of things cross your mind like, what exactly goes on?"
Young said the university's investigation is ongoing. "We are going to take swift action, we will not tolerate it," she said.
The national website for Delta Sigma Theta specifically states:
The Sorority does not consent to, condone, acquiesce in or tolerate any act of hazing, harassment or humiliation in the Membership Intake Program.
