I have more respect for Alpha Mason every day. More Presidents should follow his lead.

I'm sure they will be fine. Sometimes bold statements are made through sacrifices.

I'm very proud of Alpha. Convention planning is a 2 year process so to up and change locations a few months out requires an unimaginable level of effort.

Sometimes bold statements are made through sacrifices. True, but sorry, I would be pissed if I had already made deposits and bought my ticket and couldnt get ALL my money back because of the change!!! I usally do stuff in advance so I can ration out the money right.... I would expect them to do something about it. Make sure hotels give my money back including any deposit(s) already made and hopefully I could change my flight info without an additional fee. Some airlines charge $100 to change! That's not throwaway money to me! the only ones that would be "fine" here is the hotels/airlines.. think about all that FREE money they would get. Sorry, but they dont pay the bills... i think about our upcoming convention in NOLA.. one night has to be paid and non-refundable.. at $156/night, just one night multiplied by 10,000 sorors is over $1.5 Million

Ding: Alpha wins the first round of a grueling match......need other forces from the South to join in.....cannot do it alone.

Is making a statement worth it when making members pay for it? (literally and figuratively)

Somebody gotta pay. Dr. King made a statement and look at the price he paid. What is it worth to you? Mr Mason saw a need and he made a statement. The members will comply to his wishes.

Yah, but MLK didnt make OTHERS "pay the price" to make his statement. People chose to walk beside him. Do they really have choice? Not if they want to attend convention...
Im just saying, this aint really nothing to go back and forth on, I would just hope the president, of any org, would consider how any decision effects its members. I hope they would care about that moreso than making a "statement". Its like protecting you family...

femme,
As I stated in an earlier post, the decision was not made by Pres. Mason and the executive board ALONE, rather, it was based on the majority of the brothers who very adamantly voiced their opinion that Alpha Phi Alpha should boycott AZ, and pull out of Phoenix as the site of this year's convention. While all brothers didn't agree, the majority did, and after careful consideration of the brothers' requests, the leadership made the decision.

Robe, I understand that... Im not trpping on that part. Im just curious if you know if they made plans for those brothers that may have already paid deposits and booked flights. The ones you have to pay addtional expenses now because of the changes. Like a credit on their regsitration fee or something. I really just thought about this when I say Alc's post.. just thought about the brothers who HAVE already paid for tickets. I guess cause I know if I were me, I probably would have already paid for mine.

Various efforts are currently in the works amongst the brotherhood.
Your point is valid, but again trust me....the majority of the brothers who called for the boycott were those who already had airline tickets and room reservations. As has been stated, the membership views this matter as one that is worth the sacrifice of whatever money brothers have already spent individually.

Registered brothers were asked their opinion on the matter and from that information and other considerations, the board made the recommendation and General President Mason made the decision.
I don't envy him in having to make the decision, nor was it my preference but I support it and indicated such in my communication to the leadership.
