I don't think you have to do the whole city hall thing and obtain a certificate. Lets just say your fiance was an illegal immigrant and you couldn't get a marriage license I don't think that matters to God at all.
If both of yall really made that covenant to God and to each other, then its valid in my book.
Common law marriages might be a little different cuz sometimes they never actually make that covenant with each other, rather they just have been together for so long the law recognizes it. So to me the most important thing is the covenant, not what the gubment says.

Thats interesting...and I agree! Having said that, not all pre-marital sex is a sin in my book...though most of it is. Because its possible to be married in the eyes of God, but not necessarily legally married.

Why did they get divorced? Cuz they don't like each other anymore or b/c there was adultery?
Jesus gives us a couple reasons for divorce in Matthew 5 (adultery) and Paul gives us some in 1 Corinthians (physical abandonment by an unsaved spouse) so it is possible to divorce and have the ex-spouse still alive and be completely free to remarry.
When Jesus said "you have heard that to divorce your wife, all you need is a certificate, but I tell you, not to divorce your wife except for adultery", it referred to men literally divorcing their wives because they didn't cook for them or something petty and then the wife would be out on the street with NO means of income and would have to return to her father, live with her brother or end up as a prostitute on the street. To prevent this, Jesus upped the standards.
What about today? Would Jesus really want a woman to stay in a relationship with a heroin attic that beats her everyday? I don't think so...but thats just my opinion.

Well, jay it seems to me, that A LOT of things are YOUR opinion. The bible Cleary speaks agains Fornication. I can live with that. But beating my meat? Nah bruh, i was doing that before I even KNEW what I was doing. All it took was to be in the shower and washing down there and it started feeling good....Thats all it took.
I say that it is a NATURAL fail safe to prevent us from Pre-marityal sex

oh contrare...masturbation increases the chances of premarital sex. The fact that you didn't need an instructor on how to masturbate proves nothing other than your a human with instincts. Hetero Sex is natural, but its wrong when done in the improper context.
If you want to believe that masturbation is the will of a Holy God, your entitled to believe so...but your wasting your time trying to convince me. How would you feel if you went into a church and the Pastor masturbates every time before he preaches and lays hands on people...would you listen to a word he says...how bout....NO! lol

So what's the difference with a preacher that plays with his wife before Sunday morning service and lays hands?
Is it ungodly to play with the wife before Sunday service as well?
O...

@ Osiris...Naw doc...he can go to town on his wife as long as he washes his hands before he grab the mic...lol.
I was saying because we all know that if a preacher was masturbating before he preaches we would not listen to a word he says because we all know either consciously or subconsciously that there is something wrong about it.

...Paul gives us some in 1 Corinthians (physical abandonment by an unsaved spouse) so it is possible to divorce and have the ex-spouse still alive and be completely free to remarry. Your boy Paul (Corin. 7) also stated that a person who gets married is a person that has no self-control. "But I say to the unmarried and to widows, it is good for them if they remain even as I am. But if they don't have self-control, let them marry. For it's better to marry than to burn." ~ Corin. 7:8-9 So do you also agree that those who get married are those with no self-control? If you've been practicing self-control for the last "8 years" ... then why would you relinquish that control of self only to be married? "The wise tame themselves and if you tame yourself you're wise." ~ Buddha O...

Looking at Pauls mindset is key first. Paul believed that the return of Christ was imminent so to him getting married was a waste of time since Jesus could crack the sky at any moment. So in order to stay "saved" he said...bump it just get married if you can't hold out. For Paul, this was a practical decision not a revelation from God, as he stated it: 1 Corinthians 7:6 "But this I say by way of concession, not of command. 1Co 7:7 Yet I wish that all men were even as I myself am. However, each man has his own gift from God, one in this manner, and another in that. " For me, its not God's will for me to be unmarried. I can be a serious man of God and change the world and have a wife and family. Jeremiah the prophet had a wife and so can I! lol. I don't feel as if I'm giving up my self-control; rather, I'm entering into another season of life when I get married. With different seasons come changes. I wouldn't wear a tank top out side in December cuz its not the season for that. And the same is true for me here. In this season sex is a no-no...but when I get married...

WOW....well I will say this. Me personally, Im not sexually active I try to stay focused on Gods Word. But Im not going to lie, I think about it, but the Bible says what a man thinks in his heart...what he dwells on, are going to be his actions. But I fall short, but being as though I praise dance and am really trying to strengthen my ministry I know one way the enemy [satan] is going to try to tempt me is through my body, what i put in it, what i do or not do to it. BUT I have plenty of friends who are saved, sanctified, love Christ, but struggle with sex. And I dont judge. Becaus eonly God knows the heart. I just try to keep them prayed up BUT its easier to practice abstinence when youve never had sex before vs having sex ALL the time then trying to stop....thats a struggle from what people have told me. Here's a post for you. Question: how do you feel doin' the do but knowing you're sinning? Does it bother you? I have a friend who's Christian, but she gives little thought to fornication. She's kind of like, "Yeah, it's a sin. But I'm going to do it anyway". Or do you TRY to abstain--and fail? Discuss. ;D

I believe God recognizes two individuals who stand before him and make their vows to each other in the eyes of Him. Common law marriage is nothing more than a glorified way of saying "{yeah we not REALLY married we just sleepin together} Question, Jay, what do you think God considers "marriage?" Do you have to have a legal marriage certificate for your marriage to be recognized by God? Do you think God recognizes "common law" marriages?
