Noone talking about it, so i'll splash.
In an unprecedented step to curb “flawed membership intake processes at chapters across the country,” Herman “Skip” Mason Jr., the president of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., has suspended all new membership intake until further notice.
Mason said the decision was made in response to several hazing incidents on college campuses throughout the country including at Fort Valley State University in Georgia where an Alpha brother is charged with felony aggravated battery for allegedly injuring a pledgee to the point of hospitalization.
Alpha Phi Alpha., founded Dec. 4 1906, on the campus of Cornell University, is the oldest Greek-letter organization for African-Americans. Famous members include Martin Luther King,Jr. Supreme Court Justice Thurogood Marshall, U.S Congressman John Rangel and ESPN host Stuart Scott among others.

BGLO's (and PWO's for that matter) are all inextricably connected in a very real way. When an incident of hazing occurs in one chapter of one organization, the effects permeate our entire universe (GLO's).
Some of those effects include an increase in the collective insurance premium cost, colleges and universities placing tougher restrictions on organizations, loss of "good name" in the community...not to mention the number of unpopular hazing laws that are justified by these offenders and their infractions.
So, in this case, the General President of APA has decided to put a halt on all intake activities until further notice. Will it have unintended consequences? Of course. Is it popular? Of course not.
Leaders make tough choices. This, I'm sure, was a very tough one but i'm just as sure that it was also necessary.

I believe if Alpha Mason is willing to go out on a limb to save his frat from internal destruction, everyone else should follow suit right now. We are all fighting the same uphill battle.

Exactly, Oksana! Pres. Mason made this information public so the community would know what is going on. Like Cam said, is it popular amongst all the membership, no, but there are great many among us who do support it. I'm one of them! I think it should be discussed amongst our brother and sister organizations. Like Oksana said...we're all facing this issue and if WE don't do something about it, it will destroy us from within. I've been saying that since the first day I joined this forum.

Please don't tell me that Nationals have finally realized that they are taking in new members like like a I don't even know what type of org to compare it to. The problem Green is the stupidity of some of our members who insist on brutalizing aspirants in an effort to make them "real." What these incidents are making are "real" cases that are likely to soon be taken up by judges in courtrooms, thus putting our names and images out there in a negative light (again,) and then opening us up for lawsuits that may wipe us out. That's the REAL problem!

Huey this isn't new news at all and I would like to join my brothers and commend our Brother President on taking a huge step in halting our existing membership intake process until further notice. This was needed so that we Alpha men can take a look at our worst and turn it into something better.

This was needed so that we Alpha men can take a look at our worst and turn it into something better. True, but again, it wasn't being discussed here so i opened it up to discussion even if everyone on the board already knew about it. I came into the Bond in 08, i still fresh off the sands but im heavily involved and revamping the intake process i don't think is going to change anything. The underground process has to be revamped, thats whats causing the damage, not the legit shit.

Huey:
The problem is that there is an "underground" process to begin with. The need to do more than the sanctioned process is the source of the legal, and consequently the financial, bleeding.
I equate this, IN PRINCIPLE ONLY, to marijuana. It's illegal. But, everyone who wants weed can get it. Most people use it but not to excess. A select few individuals use it to the point where they lose control. These people no longer view the illegality of the weed as a deterrent. Instead, they have established underground rules with their "connects."
The underground process follows these same characteristics. The BGLO environment creates in its members a desire to get "made." In fact, most people are "made" without incident. But, those who have incidents cause catastrophic loss to the chapter and organization. Ultimately, this has led to a rule regarding processes.
Instead, suppose weed is legalized. Then use, possession, and procurement could be regulated with standard business practices. Similarly, if the underground process was brought above ground, then it could be regulated and supervised as well. This supervision could (and I emphasize could) help stop the financial hemorrhaging that plagues our organizations.
Just my opinion. Thoughts?

Now that I've read the whole thread, I think the only way to find an ambicale solution is for both levels of membership to come up with a new intake process. The way it was done before was a top down process. Those who weren't at the top, their voices didn't get heard. They weren't in agreement with the new process, which brought about the "underground process".
It will be great to have a year of summits for each org to discuss amongst ALL members that want to participate, have drafts made and re-made, etc. This might curtail some of this foolishness.
I've always been for a process, but I've never been for sending folks to the hospital and getting killed. Its not that serious. This recent stuff with the Alphas and Sigmas is crazy. The incident my own org had a couple of yrs ago was crazy. Its never been that serious.

Yanno I'm getting so tired of the financial/legal angle as in concern to this conversation. Actually this may sound wrong but I'm glad the orgs including mine have been sued because the reasons for doing away with the process in the first place was bs. Yes a brother loss his life trying to pledge APA but the wheels were already turning towards doing away with the above ground (SAFER!) process. The process was done away with for money, more money that is.
The orgs thought if they make the process easier more attractive then they would get more pledgee which in turn means more money. Now here is where it gets funny. The sororities won out. Look at the intake for sororities in the 80's vs the 90's. Then look at the frats 80's vs the 90's. Big disparity!
A personal example. At my chapter from 1980-89 we made 90 bruhs above ground which should have been more. The next nine years from 1990-1999 we made 27 bruhs underground. This went on across the nation with almost every frat. Now here is the kicker..... how can these orgs especially the sororties (and the fraternal leadership who wants to be like them) sleep at night taking 50,60,70, 80, sometimes over 100 women charging atleast a stack for initiation fees. You are taking atleast $70,000 from your undergrad chapters every 2 years and can't even put a damn house for them to live or atleast hold meetings in. You got these old folks in the orgs who want to live on the lam off the pockets of these babies out here and its a fucking shame.
This action that the Alpha's did ( and the orgs whom will be following so keep your eyes open) is a damn shame. Now more than ever are young men in need of a process. These negroes thinking its the 50's and 60's when they grew up in two parent homes, strict discipline and morals. We have a chance to step in for the young folks who are coming to college without the structure of the family unit. I was blessed to have both parents but most of my friends didn't and the difference was astronomical.
In the end this is about getting more money from the babies and the orgs are not giving enough back. Whats gonna happen is this.... You can do all the moratoriums you want as long as the made are more numerous than the unmade in the frat world these actions don't stand a chance. Folk gonna take paper lines over on the ug level and I guarantee you within a year the next dudes who come through will have a underground process. Give up already bring the SAFER above ground process back. Get a historical and spiritual relevance clause with the states and you will see your numbers rise exponentially. Done venting.....

I do agree that the above ground process needs to come back.
I do also believe that other orgs about to follow this same action that Mr. Mason has taken.

I've read articles about the Alpha's suspending intake on several other (non-Greek) messageboards and gossip sites. Even if I knew no Greek IRL, I'd still know about this decision, as a result of it being such widespread news. This thread has actually sparked some intelligent conversation, and I haven't seen one person come sideways at the Alphas. I don't see the problem. Alas, the board is waking up

I look in admiration at Alpha Mason for taking a huge step in trying to take care of his business. All of the orgs have had something catastrophic happen and no one wanted to take a stand. I'm guessing of the (unpopular rule) So since, the "first" of all stepped out there, I'm hopeful that the rest will follow.
