My daughter will be 16 in July and she has began to express an interest in lace fronts and sewn in tracks and fusion styles. I am a natural sistah in every since of the word (not even jewelry) and I hate weave. I mean seriously think if you can' grow it then just live with it. My daughter says I am being old fashioned what say ya'll?

She has a different style than you, which means you will continue to bump heads when it comes to hair style, and probably clothes. I do not think you should completely discredit her taste in hairdoos.

I agree, let her express her self and discover what "works for her". It is good for her self esteem. Just help her to discover quality hair and stylists.

I say let her experiment within reason. She may try it and decide that it's too much upkeep or that she really does not like it after all.
Either way, it's not something illegal or crazy and it's not going to hurt her. She's old enough and hair is something very personal. Let her try some things and figure what HER look is.

I told Quiet this some weeks ago...
I am not sure about lacefronts and fusions.....
but SEW INs are whats up!
My sister had a relaxer, and she really didnt need one. To make a long story short, her hair matted up like an SOS pad when she washed it one day. My mom had to cut it all out. All she had left was about an inch or two of hair. She was crying!!!!
Anyway she went to this stylist, if you have TV One, and watched Taj on I married a baller, my sister got her sew in done by the same stylist that did her hair in Nashville..she wore it for a while, i'd say almost a year. She recently took it out right before she moved to NYC, and I pressed her hair and it is VERY long and thick. its about 5 inches past her boobs. so basically it is as long as the weave.
Of course she took it out and washed her own hair and got it re-done from time to time. But if you do it right and want to grow out ur relaxer, a sew in is your friend!!
I am doing it too. I dont like relaxers cause it eventually thins out your hair and it strips it of everything. I have cut as much of my own hair as possible and wear sew ins, my hair is now past my shoulders, and i dont really need another sew in, but I like em so much, I may get it re-done again.
(right now I am wearing my own hair)

Let her be herself. You don't want anyone telling you what your personal style should be. She's a teenager and it's only hair. What are you going to do whwen she wants to wear makeup? It's coming!

I have to agree with the ladies on here. You and your daughter sound like me and my mom once I decided to grow my relaxer out. The only thing my mom has done so far is piss me off, show me that she thinks perm=pretty, and cause me to add one more thing to the list of things I can't talk to her about.
I say just be supportive and let her do her. You might actually like what she ends up with. If you don't want to totally pay for it then go in half or something. Maybe yall can compromise on the style, color, length, etc?

I am soooo glad someone started this thread. I am really considering getting a sew in myself. My friends mom has one and I've seen her hair and I was so surprised that it wasn't her hair and she said the same thing y'all are saying about sew in's. She said she paid $350 for the hair alone and about $150 to get it sewed in but she reuses the hair. Claims it's the really "good" hair and it is reusable. I didn't get to converse with her about it for long, but what about the scalp -how do you oil or condition your scalp. My friends mom said something about a net place on top of her braids. Can someone break it down for me. How long do you leave it in? How do you treat and wash your own hair when you keep the weave in 1-2 months at a time? I wash my hair every other week. How is your hair NOT neglected? Anyone with sew in's do tell. I'm really considering this because I went to the Dominican's a few weeks back and they burned off a piece of my hair and now I'm on strike from er'one until I nuture my hair back to full health.

I say let her try it. If she doesn't like it, then lesson learned. If she does like it, make her get a job to keep it up. LOL!!!!!!!

i've done the sew-ins before too, they are great if you take care of your hair and get it re-done on a regular basis. deep conditioning too, because your hair will get dry underneath. i'm wearing my hair at the moment but will probably go back to get a new sew-in by spring.
