Regina Benjamin practices as a country doctor in rural Alabama. As founder and CEO of the Bayou La Batre Rural Health Clinic, Dr. Regina Benjamin is making a difference to the underserved poor in a small fishing village on the Gulf Coast of Alabama. It is a town of about 2500 people, about 80 percent of her patients live below the poverty level, and Dr. Benjamin is their only physician. www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/ap/top/all/6526695.html

I was just about to post this. Obama has not disappointed in his picks. Overall I give him a A- on his job so far. Would like to have given him an A+ but the bailout/stimulus situation coupled with his lack of unbroken rigidity against special interest won't allow me to do it. Still he is doing a WAY better job than his predecessor.

I'm waiting to see how the right wingnuts will launch their attacks against her. You know it's coming just as sure as taxes and death.

They're still in a tizzy over Sotomayor. I wonder if they even noticed the SG pick. That's two eminently qualified women that Obama has picked for high positions that the GOP is probably going to have to swallow (whether they like it or not).

They're doing the press conference now on CNN! I am very, very pleased. EXCELLENT pick! I'm hoping that President Obama's picks are going to have a lasting effect--perhaps we can get another African-American president out of these individuals serving in his administration.

True... but for some reason when we talk about race, gender becomes transparent, and when we talk about gender, race becomes transparent.
I do certainly hope the transformative effect that Obama may have on young black males, the appointments of these women of color will have transformative effects on young women of color (especially black)

Putting Alabama on the map, that's what I'm talking about! I've been watching the Sotomayor confirmation hearing. After many years of minorities being overlooked, we have a president who is dedicated to showing the world that minorities can be competent, accomplished individiuals. It is a great day for America!

I was curious as to whether or not she might be a member of the D9.
It's great to see our fellow D9 members appointed to positions of leadership at such a high level. Congrats to the ladies of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc! She's a "homegirl," so you know I'm especially pleased for her!
Distinguished members such as these (and Dr. Charles Bolden at NASA) will go a long way in helping to re-define ourselves to the nation..and the world as to what we OUGHT to be about!

It's difficult to get doctors to go to these rural areas so even though this is a great opportunity for her, I wonder about whether they'll be able to get someone to take her place or whether the local residents will suffer and have to travel further for care. Time will tell.

2-1 odds that Obama gets someone from the entire D9 involved. He's already appointed the Bruhz, a Delta, I recall that someone somewhere on his staff or cabinet is an Alpha. Michelle covers AKA.

When did they finally initiate Michelle? I thought that fell through last summer. Fell through? When did anyone say anything about...
...you know what...
...I asked about this once and didn't get any reply and so I just left it alone. I'ma leave it left alone. I heard she was made honorary, I never heard anyone say, "sike" so I assume she is one.
So Obama has to get in a Sigma, a Kappa, an Iota, a Zeta, and an SGRho (if he hasn't already).

She wasn't initiated at the Boule due to "security concerns". Maybe they did something private later but my Mom hasn't mentioned it.

The acting Navy Secretary is frat. www.navy.mil/navydata/bios/navybio.asp?bioid=13I do seem to remember there being another brother on his cabinet in some capacity...can't remember the name. I would indeed like to see someone from each of the D9 orgs on this administration's cabinet, or in some capacity working very closely with the WH.

Attorney General Eric Holder is an Alpha if I'm not mistaken. This makes the second Delta Surgeon General, Dr. Jocelyn Elders appointed by President Bill Clinton is also a lady of DST

2couth, Is not Alabama already on the map? Alabama has a long history of racism, bigotry and lots of other things, so I think your dot on the map is already present. Putting Alabama on the map, that's what I'm talking about! I've been watching the Sotomayor confirmation hearing.
