**kind of a spinoff from another thread**
Someone made the statement that our free will is a gift and that God, in His infinite wisdom and greatness, did this for US.
Is free will a gift?

I think we are allowed free will but I don't see it as a gift. A gift from God is used to edify and uplift believers and are given by the Holy Spirit. Most of the things we do with our free will won't uplift anyone and are usually carnal and sinful in nature. Typically no uplifting or edification involved.

Luke 22:42
42Saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done.
Matthew 6:9-10 9After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.
10Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.
Morals and Dogma by Albert Pike
The true name for Satan, the Kabalists say, is that of Yahveh reversed; for Satan is not a black god, but the negation of God. The Devil is the personification of Atheism or Idolatry. For the Initiates, this is not a Person, but a Force, created for good but which may serve for evil. It is the instrument of Liberty or Free Will. (p. 102)

random thought probably prompted by Satan...
Free will in the bible is very conditional... basically you can do what you want BUT only if it abides by God Law... just program me...

exactly.. a lot harder.. its like we have all these natural instincts like animals yet we have all these conditions that cause us to repress them. Its really complex but I guess the G-Man needs entertainment too... I provide boatloads...

I feel you.....it's like we have a will to do what we would like to do, but somehow, it has to be in His will too..........................rather confusing.

re: free will- Free will is definitely a gift. God exacts wholesouled devotion...which is not possible if we have no choice but to serve Him, programed instinctually as robots or animals. Call to mind the faithful man, Job. Satan taunted Jehovah when he said that the only reason any humans did God's will was because (1) they had no other choice or (2) for their own selfish gain. Remember what God did? He allowed Satan to put Job to the test. And then? After using his free will to make the right choice, remaining faithful to God and obeying Him implicitly, God's authority was vindicated. Why? Because God showed, through Job that he doesn't have to force humans to do His will, but they do it anyway.
God doesn't want compelled service. He even allowed a third(!) of his heavenly host to go their separate way when they decided they didn't want to serve him anymore. For this reason, the only people who participate in the execution of God's will are those who truly want to.

Also, bible says that "without faith it is impossible to serve God well." Yet, without free will, there is no need for faith. (ask me why?) There is no affirmative decision to serve God, no opportunity to demonstrate our love for our creator, no one to "give a reply to him that is taunting [God]"

40:1 And Jehovah answered Job and said,
40:2 Shall he that will contend with the Almighty instruct [him]? he that reproveth +God, let him answer it.
40:3 And Job answered Jehovah and said,
40:4 Behold, I am nought: what shall I answer thee? I will lay my hand upon my mouth.
40:5 Once have I spoken, and I will not answer; yea twice, but I will proceed no further.
40:6 And Jehovah answered Job out of the whirlwind and said,
40:7 Gird up now thy loins like a man: I will demand of thee, and inform thou me.
40:8 Wilt thou also annul my judgment? wilt thou condemn me that thou mayest be righteous?42 chapters..... Awesome book
