I've seen Imitation of Life so many times when I was younger, but Mahalia's part in the movie always gets to me. Anyone who does not get goosebumps after hearing Mahalia Jackson sing needs their vitals checked.

The church has some hiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiigh choir stalls. I mean, heck, she's literally singing from the rafters of the church. Can you imagine the sound quality?

I love this movie. I never watched the whole movie and understood it until I got to college. I wish more people sang like that now.

I hate this movie and I can't stand Mahalia's voice. I know I'm in the minority. I didn't hate the movie but it bothered me every time the mother tried to make her daughter not want to pass or bust her groove. She clearly did not want to be Black and fought so hard to distance herself from her mama. When I watched the movie the first time I remember thinking why are you not letting this go? |
