I have mixed feelings on cursing.
The Bible says we shouldn't "curse" people, and we should keep our communication pure. But wasn't a "curse" back then something like, "May you be smitten with boils and may all your cattle die"?
Also, when you look at the history of curse words in the English language, what's a curse word in one decade eventually becomes absorbed and becomes a "regular" word. words such as "Golly", "Gosh", "Darn", etc. used to be just as offensive as "fvck", "chyt", etc. In fact, the history of "golly" and what it means is kind of strong: it is a contraction of "God's Body", sort of like GD. Bet you didn't know that!
What's more, different words are offensive to different groups of people. "Bloody" is on par with "fvking" in the UK. I remember someone brought some magazines back from South Africa. There was an article about how some politician had used foul language. The word he used? "Rubbish". The magazine even printed it "r*bbish".
So what is "sinful" about saying, "I need to pick up all this chyt off the floor" or "damn, I locked my keys in the car?"

I don't think curse words are a sin... I've always thought words were just words. I mean, I understand that words can be powerful, but a word has as much power as you give it. "nigger" to me isn't a bad word because I don't give it the power to be. I guess that goes same with curse words. But, you shouldn't use God's name in vain

I think the intent behind it determines if its a sin or not.
If I say "I have alot of s*it to do today," I don't think thats a sin, because I'm just using it as a substitute for "stuff." LOL. I mean the exact same thing if I say "I have alot of stuff to do today." Changing that one word makes it a sin?

I was going to sorta say the same thing cold. Its not the word so much but the intent and feeling behind using it. I think some things are seen as crass and while the context you are using it in may not be malicious it isn't appropriate because of the feelings the word envokes or because of its alternate uses.

There is a difference between using profane language and cursing someone.

Ephesisans 4:29 "Let no unwholesome word proceed from your mouth" Words are very contextual...yes, but in our context (America) the F-Bomb is certainly unwholesome...i.e. Don't drop the F-Bomb. Thank you and good night God doesn't want our Opinions on this matter, God wants our Obedience.

So Jay: is saying, "I have a lot of shit to do today" "unwholesome"? What's the difference in that and "I have a lot of crap to do today?" What if I say, "You are a lousy, sorry, dirtbag" to someone? I didn't curse...but is that "wholesome"? What if I say, "Girl this research paper you just wrote is the SHYT! You should be SO PROUD!" I cursed...but was that "unwholesome"? Again, "golly" originally meant something very offensive. But it's giggle-worthy as a curse word now. Should I avoid it? Is that "cursing" if I use it? Just trying to understand what makes a word a "curse" word. I had a sanctified friend who would get mad in college and angrily spit, "Man, freak this junk". You knew what he WANTED to say.

According to the scripture J quoted, the key is what is "unwholesome" or not. Some words we all agree on...but there is actually a grey area.

@ Z, if your Pastor stood up in the pulpit and said "Jesus was the best m-f'ing thing that ever happened to me" and then preached about Holiness and said he wanted to prophesy something to you, you'd run out of that church and never look back...lol.
Why? Because contextually speaking, those words are not of God at all.

My pastor actually DID say something from the pulpit once that could be taken either way...
He said that his college professor used to say, "In a world where nobody gives a damn...JESUS does".

you must have a liberal pastor...lol... I just used that to say that speaking for me, I know innately that curses are wrong. Even when I cursed like a sailor, I knew it wasn't of God.
I bet the church audience looked at your pastor like he bumped his head when he said that!

I didn't...I was more like, "YES! I'M SO GLAD JESUS CARES!" But I'm liberal too, so what can I say?

I agree with Cam. Profane language and cursing someone is not the same thing. But the Bible does speak about the language you use towards others. Even if it's not what society considers profane, using different words with the same intent = profanity.
