When Beyonce said "the Queen" and then Tina Turner came out, I was thinking "naw, Aretha is the Queen". Folks who know better know who the real queen is, so I don't know why Aretha is even getting upset. At the end of the day, you are still Aretha Franklin, Queen of Soul, diva, one of the best singers ever in the history of music. All of this pettiness is really beneath her.
Edited to add: Matthew Knowles, founder of Destiny's Child is in no position to criticize her though...she is still the Queen and deserves respect, especially from folks who have gotten rich putting out substandard music. If your name has ever been attached to such trash as Bootylicious, you are automatically relegated to the basement and not allowed to give any opinions on real music or real musicians; no matter what they do or say.

But aren't there Queens of the different music genres? I thought Aretha was the Queen of Soul not all music made by Black women. Patti LaBelle had a little issue with her lable a while ago because they were promoting Mariah Carey's album heavily and not putting much effort into her album. She kept calling herself "made," LOL. I love them all but sometimes they come off as really silly.
I didn't see the show but it was unprofessional of her to say something about it at the show. Plus Beyonce's reading off a teleprompter right? So she didn't write what she said.

I just thought it was petty of Aretha. She has held the title Queen of Soul for forever. But Beyonce just stated "the queen." That wasn't a big deal. Nothing is ever going to take that title from Areatha.

Actually it sounded like an overall insult! To say that Knowles name-dropped "Franklin and a long list of famed female singers" before saying that... "There is one legend who has the essence of all of those things: the glamor, the soul, the passion, the strength, the talent," then introducing Tina Turner is as the QUEEN?
Listen, Aretha Franklin is known for her Diva rampages, but moreover, this demonstrates how insensitive the Recording Academy is. This year, Aretha Franklin was nominated and awarded the PERSON of the YEAR Award by them, an honor that Beyonce, Tina Turner and others better hope they live to receive. Only people like Quincy Jones, James Taylor, Paul Simon, Stevie Wonder etc receive this highly coveted honor for the work as fine musicians, not just entertainers. To put Franklin in a list of folk that together make a Tina Turner IS an insult.
Franklin is a classically trained pianist, prolific writer, able to sing OPERA and has the range of a sober, un-shallow Mariah with the power of an Seraph. She is a GENIUS. She isn't an ENTERTAINER like Beyonce or Tina, sorry. So hell yeah, she was pissed. Can You imagine how true artists like Franklin feel when you have substandard folk covering your lifework, or acting like they can get like you? Please!

Uh, Re-Re, Arethat is not a classically trained pianist and she certainly cannot sing opera. If anyone saw that performance all she didwas gospelize Italian not taking away from the fact that she is the bomb but let's keep it real.
