Alicia Keys opened the show performing with Frank Sinatra and The Time performed (with Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis for the first time in years) - that was the highlight for me thus far

Why did Aretha look like she walked into JoAnn's and said, "Gimme 2 bolts of that sunshine fabric! I need to cover up these arms."?

Ghost, didn't I predict that in my Razzie's thread in the BGLO section? I knew she would come up and through looking a mess. SMH.

Add GRAMMY winner to Obama's list of credentials. His recorded version of the Audacity of Hope beat out Bill Clinton and Maya Angelou and some other folk.

This was the worst one ever. I thought this was an awards show? I got more performances than awards.

They typically don't film the majority of awards presented. For example, doors open at 1pm, but filming begins at 5pm. They fiqure that the audience wants to be entertained. Speaking of that, what was Will I Am doing?

@ KD
Actually, I thought it was great! I thought the performance pairings were great entertainment, and as long as you show the most significant (read popular) categories, you keep the essentials of the awards show. For ratings, you definitely want to turn the show more into an entertainment show to keep folks watching and advertisers interested.
I believe they did it the same way last year, and the Oscars moved that way too.
It's a nice way also to keep the show length down, because there's less people to go over their allotted time on acceptance speeches.

I saw A.Keyes performances and they were really good. B and Tina was an interesting performance, I felt like B wanted to get wild. Kanye's performance we just o.k. I have seen better in the past, however I can understand that he might still be upset and just not feeling like his old self. I did not see Amy Winehouse, however I was tired of them promoting it, like that was going to be the best performance of the evening.

@ Ghost: The show was 3.5 hours. How is that keeping the time down? In past years they showed more of the awards. I thought the performances were awful. The Oscars still give out awards and yes a lot of them are what we don't want to see but they still show them. Believe me I will not watch again!

KD - Yeah it was 3.5 hours, but it was 3.5 hours filled with performance instead of the awkward teleprompter reading of people who don't do it well. Also, the other reason there was more performance was because of the writers' strike. No one was there to write the intro speeches and whatnot.
I agree that some of the performances were bad...I still don't understand the Amy Winehouse phenomenon. Her song is okay, but did it deserve that many awards? and the performance that much hype throughout the evening?

I agree with you there. I like Amy Winehouse but she really isn't better than you're average black singer. Natalie Cole was upset she won so many awards.

Amy Winehouse's album is fire.
Robin Thicke's album is fire, but he wasn't even nominated, so I can't be mad about Amy winning.
Kanye's album is also fire, so I'm glad he won something . . . but Herbie Hancock? . . . Really???

The fact that he won album of the year has me SERIOUSLY wanting to check out his album.
And you have to remember, the Grammys are voted on by other artists, writers, producers, etc from across all genres. It's because they're voted on by fellow musicians that they're considered the pinnacle for musicians...and if true musicians agreed that Herbie had the best album - and he clearly doesn't have enough of a machine behind him to buy it - I'm inclined to believe that album really is the truth

I think the whole Bey, Ri Ri and Jay triangle is good for the gossip rags and is part of the reason for Ri Ri's popularity.
Ri Ri's acceptance speech with Jay was cute to me!

Herbie has been slighted a NUMBER of times in years past, and I think this was a way to try to make amends. I know he's won for the jazz category before, but not for Album of the Year. I don't know if remakes of Joni Mitchell songs constitute a Grammy win, but hey...he won. I'm glad he finally got his props.
