Apparently, even up to 48 hours before he made the announcement, McCain was holding out to name either Joe Liebermann or Tom Ridge as VP pick. However, because they're both in favor of abortion rights, he would have totally lost his base. The idea got leaked to some conservatives who then threatened to fight on the convention floor and reject either pick.
McCain decided not to go with either Romney or Pawlenty because they seemed too safe. He was advised that he needed to shake things up or he would be on a losing trajectory. He met with Palin face-to-face for the first time on Thursday and offered the job hours later.
The thought was that if her name had been leaked with the other names earlier, Crist, Jindal, Romney, etc., it wouldn't have been seen as fresh. So they took their chances and named her as the pick. With that philosophy though, NO ONE in Alaska was asked about her, no papers, no Wasilla city council members, current mayors, state legislature, NO ONE!!!!!!
That's why a lot of Alaskans were shocked to know that she was the VP candidate pick.
Can you imagine with all of the Republican talk that they wanted to see a fight on the DNC floor between Obama and Clinton supporters, there might have been one on the RNC floor? Actually, Ron Paul's people are gearing up for the convention, and there might still be one. They have a case with all of the problems this governor has. McCain has to ride this out, he can't go back on this decision. He prolly won't let her resign either.
This was just a summary of the following story.
