By LIZ SIDOTI, Associated Press Writer 18 minutes ago DENVER - John McCain kept his vice presidential pick a closely guarded secret hours before the high-stakes announcement Friday as top prospects seemed to drop away and speculation moved to darkhorse candidate Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin. Two GOP strategists close to the McCain campaign said all indications pointed to Palin, 44, a self-styled "hockey mom" and political reformer. The strategists spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized by the McCain camp to discuss the matter. There was no confirmation from McCain or his advisers. With an announcement scheduled in Dayton, Ohio, an associate of Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty said the governor had been informed he is not McCain's pick. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak for Pawlenty, who had all but ruled himself out. **Cam's Thoughts** Ok, as an older guy who loves women of all kinds I have to first say that this woman is attractive. Maybe that's why he chose her? IF he chooses Palin as his running mate, it will clearly mean 1 of 2 things: 1. McCain thinks he can get all of the disgruntled, feminist who are upset because Obama didn't choose Hillary as his running mate. It assumes that these women are shallow and chauvinist and only care about electing a woman. or 2. The GOP has already conceded the election to Obama and want to throw a bone to the women. Romney has decided that he can't run with someone he feels he can beat.

Obama covered his greatest weakness with Biden, which is foreign policy.
Since McCain's sense of economics are shot, i some how see him selecting Mick Romney not Palin. Interesting though...

I think Palin will bring some interest to the ticket, it won't necessarily make him win.
She has only been Governor 2 years, so she has less experience than Obama and no foreign policy experience. With McCain's age, he needs to pick someone that can step right in, she can't do that.

well 1) alot of feminist are shallow and chauvinist and only care about electing a woman
2) I think this would be a very "unsmart" move for him unless this woman can come off as the anti- Hillary wouldn't the same comments about HC apply to her?

MSNBC just confirmed that it is Sarah Palin.
I don't know about this one. I don't think he will win, but it will make his campaign interesting.

First of all.....OBAMA ROCKED THE HOUSE...AND THE NATION!!! The republicans are sitting in awe wondering what in hell they can do to top that. The answer is NOTHING!!
Now...McCain has selected Palin. Two points...and Cam hit on one above...she is a pro-lifer and that will not go over well with the pro-choice women at all. In that regard, he could have picked Huckabee.
Second...the only women he'll get is the right wing women who would have voted for him anyway, because Hillary's folks were for HILLARY and nothing else!! Obama's homerun converted many (if not most) of them last night. The other die-hards will not vote for McCain just because he's picked a woman...and an ultra-conservative one at that.
I think with the momentum the democrats have after this convention, and this weak choice McCain has made in a vp, I won't say it's a lock, but it's looking alot better for Obama/Biden than it did just a week ago. I expect the momentum to continue through the debates and the election.

Ok guys, you all are very sure that this strategy won't work. I'm somewhat afraid but will think positively :-) natural, Who is this girl...I mean really? Less than two years in the governor's office..and they rag Obama as "no experience." She's a super-ultra right wing woman....just the kind of woman the Hillary fanatics DON'T WANT, so did he think he'd get Hill's supporters with this? I'm not afraid at all...mater of fact, I feeling even more optimistic about Obama's chances after this!!

Palin:
She's 44. Married to a Native Eskimo named Todd and they have 5 children. He works for BP and is a fisherman. She holds lifetime membership in the NRA. Is a STAUNCH conservative Pro-Life advocate
Here's where it gets good...
She was a sports reporter She was second runner up in the Ms. Alaska She served 2 terms on the Wasilla City Council (92-96) She reduced property taxes by 60% Elected Mayor of Wasilla in 1999 Ran for Lt Governor in 2002 but lost Ran for Governor in 2006 She's good on energy She's being investigated for dismissing a commissioner for not firing her sisters ex-husband.
Other than this...she's got no experience...at all..

I expected McFossil to do better. He talked about Obama so bad about non-experience, and this is his answer?

Sorry for the double post but I wanted to make sure you all saw this. Some things to think about:
1. McCain has already opposed equal pay legislation - now it's REALLY going to be a topic for discussion. www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/04/23/mccain-opposes-equal-pay-_n_98342.html thinkprogress.org/2008/05/07/mccain-equal-pay-girl/
2. Apparently McCain is unaware of the BIGOTRY in his OWN party. If you had a reason to pause before voting for Obama because he's black - NOW you have a reason to pause before you vote for McCain - because his VP is a woman. McCain apparently doesn't realize that the strength of his party (for many years) has been it's lack of diversity - the fact that it could feel comfortable in views and biases - because they all had them - now you're asking them to take in an "outsider" - hasn't that been how they've been trying to paint Obama - not one of us? Not an American loving white male?
3. Palin is (as I understand it) a fairly likeable person has a really compelling story (she has a child with learning disabilities that's she's worked hard to care for) - but McCain just threw the experience card out the window - she has LESS than 2 years as governor
4. McCain gets no edge in any battleground states (Michigan, Florida, Minnesota) with this pick where he certainly would have if he had picked Romney, Crist, or Pawlenty
5. This pick might energize some Hillary supporters who were dead set against Obama, but it doesn't really rally McCain supporters - all week the talk has been about Romney, Pawlenty, and Crist - if you were hoping for one of the three - you are disappointed right now. If you are a bigot (and if you're in the GOP you are) McCain just threw away the safe pick and is forcing you to hold your nose when voting for him. 75,000 people are NOT going to pack a stadium over this pick.
6. Did I mention already that the GOP is the party of white men? After the GOP has dart-boarded Hillary for years - you think they're going to embrace a woman themselves? A woman who, with only 2 years experience, could VERY likely become President given McCain's age? The only way they can accept her as one of the guys is for her to "act like one of the guys" - to think like they do - and I don't think that'll work
7. I honestly think McCain over-reached on this one. The WORST thing you can do is patronize people - and I think after the media finishes introducing Palin to America and relaying her positions - alot of women will be insulted by the implication that because Palin is female McCain believes he will get your vote regardless of what his positions are.
8. The political argument that Joe Biden is ready to be President doesn't even have to be made. After last night and this convention, and how Barack has been shown to be right over and over again on Foreign policy - I don't think we have to ask the question is he ready. Nor would we have to make this conversation if Hillary was on the ticket. She was ready. Palin? Does anyone believe that less than 2 years as governor is experience enough to run the country? Expect to hear that theme. Expect the McCain camp to explain this ad nauseum. Expect Palin to, perhaps unfairly, be asked most frequently the question about Roe V Wade and if she supports it.
9. I don't know if I mentioned this but - isn't the GOP the party of white males? I wonder what type of effect this will have on the convention? And can Palin overcome her ovaries amongst the testicles and deliver the kind of red meat vitriol that doesn't seem to characterize her short tenure as governor of Alaska - and if she does - doesn't that HURT her image?
10. NOW Hillary has DOUBLE the dog in this race. If anyone thought that secretly she was hoping for Obama to lose so she could run again, if indeed Hillary was that calculating - there is NO WAY - she let's someone else sidle up and take that legacy as a gimmick or a ploy. With McCain being 72 - and right at the age of life expectancy, whoever he picks as VP could wind up being President. Hillary has done all the work - now McCain's VP gets to reap the rewards as a political ploy? I don't think so. I think if Hillary wasn't invested before (and I think she was) I think she is DOUBLY invested now.

You're cool, nat!
I (we) just wanted you to see that McFossil is showing signs of desperation...and dementia from the looks of it. I was listening to Rush HogBaugh on the radio and of course he's trying to spin this li'l Kelly Girl as if she's the second coming of Condi Rice or something.
When that sow is off the air, I'm sure he is thinking to himself..."whatthafurck was that old coot thinking?" "This is a bad day to have stopped my pill poppin' habit!"

I think her selection is so offensive. Someone said that this is a win win for black women? How? As a WOMAN, to pick HER, is offensive. It's almost a slap in the face, like he's trying to gain FEMALE Hilary supporters. She has NO experience and COMPLETELY undermines the whole "Obama is not qualified" argument so I hope they realize how much money they have just lost in campaign ads alone b/c you need to pull them. And while Im not a Hilary supporter, she isnt even Hilary! To me this is "all women are the same"...Seriously, this is SO FUGGIN DUMB!
If the McCain ticket wins my faith in Americans will be completely shot. It wouldnt matter if the other candidate was Obama or not...a 72 yr old cancer stricken Pres with COMPLETELY unqualified VP who touts her as his most competent successor is just assinine. They are dumber than Bush.

I'm still tripping at the fact that she has a 4 month old son who has Down Syndrome. Personally, I feel that with her having a child with special needs she isn't ready for a position at powerful as VP. She needs to be tending to her 5 kids.
