Spielberg Wants Will Smith For Chicago 7- Smith Keen On Project
The Chicago Seven were a group of defendants charged with crimes concerning riots, and violent protests for scenes which took place during the 1968 Democratic National Convention.
The convention, held to select the Democrat partyfs presidential nominees for the 1968 election, became the focus of protests over the Vietnam war, which was at its height at that time.
The seven, originally eight, people charged with the crimes were eventually acquitted, or had their convictions reversed because of the alleged racism, or cultural bias shown during the trial.
Itfs not a nice story, but it's certainly ripe for a film to be made around the events. And that is exactly what Steven Spielberg, along with fellow producers Walter F. Parkes, and Laurie MacDonald intend to do.
Using an Aaron Sorkin script, Spielberg will direct the picture, with Dreamworks in control.
The only piece of casting thatfs confirmed so far is Sacha Baron Cohen, best known for his comedy creation Borat, playing Abbie Hoffman. But it seems that Will Smith is also a frontrunner for a part in the obviously controversial movie based on real events.
Dark Horizons are reporting that Will Smith is being lined up to play Black Panther party activist Bobby Seale, the so called eighth person.
Smith told them:
When Steve is ready he will send it. I don't know specifics, story, anything, but he told me the filming dates, so I can be free to do it. It's not a 100% sure thing yet, but I'm confident.
Although I'm not that keen on the recent I Am legend, Smith usually goes beyond the call of duty for film roles, and literally puts his heart and soul in to a part, so this looks like being a solid choice.
Filming is due to start at the end of March, providing the writers strike has ended by then.
