The Pregnant Man Grows Ever Larger in Buzz

On Thursday, Oprah introduced Oregon resident Thomas Beatie to anyone who hadn't yet heard of him. Beatie, a transgender man who is legally male, is six months pregnant with his and his wife's child. La Winfrey called the expectant situation "a new definition of what diversity means for everybody."

And everybody, it seems, is interested. Over the past seven days, searches for "pregnant man" rose 26,879%. Demand for "thomas beatie" grew more than 3,000%. Interest in "oregon man pregnant" has swelled 461%.

As for the skeptics who typed "man claims he is pregnant" and "pregnant man?" into Search, we can answer: Mr. Beatie retained his female reproductive organs. Because he has a uterus, he can get pregnant and carry a baby to term.

In Buzz, some of the most popular articles from the past week focused on the bun in Beatie's oven. As we posted earlier, Boing Boing and Huffington Post were two of the first sources to surface with articles on the story. Since then, the Huffington Post scored another hit with an item revealing more photos of the fertile daddy.

LilSugar, Yahoo! News, and People.com have also polled well with Buzz readers. The People.com article, which offers an exclusive video clip from today's Oprah appearance, is fast on its way to being the most voted-on article in Buzz today.

So has this childbearing event really redefined what diversity means for everybody? The tale certainly seems to have people thinking about gender issues. We've noted a surge in queries for "transgendered" and "transgender pregnancy." Lookups for "pregnant man" have flowed in from every state in the U.S. and every age group.

With the fruitful papa about to enter his third trimester, we may have three more months of this baby buzz. Enjoy it!

I'm still lost with this one....ok he was born a woman? then later became transgender or trans sexual and wanted to become a man? and now he wants to be a mother? He stopped taking his growth harmons to STOP being a MAN right? He kept his uterus long before all this? So why did he try to become a man if he was going to try and have a baby later?

I don't think "Thomas" ever wanted to be a man. She kept all of her woman parts and the only thing she did to become a man was dress the part and take testosterone to grow facial hair and enlarge her clitoris. I forgot what they said she did with her breasts. Basically she is a woman who is legally a man having a baby... biologically "Thomas" is a woman...why they feel the need to make it into some spectacualar freakish feat is beyond me...again poor baby

I watched the show yesterday. It was interesting. I kind of feel like it's was a lot of "I wanna have my cake and eat it too." It was weird. The way they view life and gender roles is really unique.

This does NOT change diversity AT ALL...lol... A WOMAN took some testosterone, grew a mustache, got her breasts removed and got a haircut and now SHE is pregnant. So what that this person is legally a "male". Biologically, she is a female with a mustache and a buzz cut.

Oprah made it seem as if this was a man that was born male and somehow miraculously got pregnant. She made a mountain out of a mole hill.

I actually think Oprah's show offered clarity by spelling out all of the details behind how Tracy became Thomas because the media and it's blanket headlines are the one's who perpetuated the ideas and wanted people to believe that it was a natural born man who was giving birth to a baby and if you notice the headlines have decreased substantially since Thomas appeared on Oprah and the foolish notion was dispelled...

I am about as progressive as the next person. I have supported the rights of gay couples to have the same rights as married couples. I have supported legislations against hate crimes. I have even advocated for gay couples being able to adopt.

But this is about as fvkked up as a football bat! This child will be bat shit crazy behind this confusion. If Tracy felt so much like a man and KNEW that she was actually a man then she should accept that fact and not create a circus enviornment for her child.

What makes one a man or woman has been blurred, I can give society that. But what makes one male or female is pretty damned concrete. For those of you who may have missed that film in the 4th grade, i'll share some knowledge with you.

Did you watch the ENTIRE show or just watch the clip? It kind of sounds like you didn't.

Oprah did not try and make it seem like he was a born male having a kid. The interview went through everything from his childhood to his life now. They showed pictures of him as a little girl and as a female model for pageants in Hawaii. If she were trying to act like he was a born male then she probably wouldn't have show all those pics of him as a female...
