Yanno I watch the news ALOT maybe to much and I listen to talk radio wayyyyyyyyyyyy to much.
Anyway I'm following the disasters in China and the flood in Myanmar and I seriously ask... Are Americans ready for a Widespread Natural Disaster.
In china there are an estimated 5 million people homeless right now. Nuclear reactors have been compromised and people are living under martial law. But there is no unrest..
So it begs to question since their isn't widespread unrest in China is it because of the government structure. The so-called lack of freedoms that they have has it prepared the Chinese to handle this disaster in a sane way?
What if 5 Million people were homeless in America due to a natural disaster. What do you think would happen? Are folks ready? Are you prepared?

Of course not. We can barely handle the economy as is.

Too be honest, Americans have grown soft. I know that if some people were thrust into the situations like Myanmar and China, they'd be dead in a week, maybe sooner.
No one is ever truly prepared for any situation. It's just like marriage. Nothing truly prepares you for marriage except marriage. But I can say that as long as I have my faith and keep my wits about me, I should be alright.

Good thread Vodou!
Look at what happened in NO after the storm. We are not ready. Our lives are too dependent on luxuries that we would not know how to live without. Think about it, there are many folks out there who can't even cook....not even a little bit. Many homes are all electric so if we lose power...some will be screwed.
This is also the land of opportunity. So when opportunity knocks, we are taught to strick hard and often. We are the types of people who get rich off of natural disaster and then repent later.
So in the wake of a huge natural disaster, people would rob each other, kill each other, etc...just because. Not to mention those who would be doing it to meet basic human needs.
5 million homeless? We would DEFINATELY be in a state of martial law. With shoot to kill orders.

Remember martial law was delcared in N.O. in the wake of Katrina.
We are doomed if something major happens here.
Did anyone see the "We Were Warned" special on CNN? All we need is a bad natural disaster to strike Houston to render us helpless.

Houston is the site of more than half of our domestic oil refineries.
We use a quarter of all the oil in the world. Knock out the refining capacity of Houston and we have $10/gallon gas overnight.

NO
I do kind of think that a lot of people are so used to making ends meet one way or another that it may not be as devastating to them as others who aren't used to doing anything for themselves.
you would be amazed at what all you can do with things like lemon juice, baking soda, salt, water, and the different kinds of oils you see in the store everyday.
And as soon as I get my new tv I'm getting a carrying permit and a peace of mind.
