I actually enjoyed being one of the few black faces in a class, I enjoyed the challenge of it and competing with the white kids. It gave me great pleasure when I got better grades or had a better presentation. The experience is different of course but I enjoyed my PWI and after working at a couple of HBCU's i knew i made the right choice for me. One thing I will say is not all PWI's are cut and dry with professors who do not care about you. The hook up worked at my school just as well as it would any other school.
