this is my first post on here but i've been a frequent visitor and reader of onolympus...
Now my question about what music is "appropriate" was sparked when I had a conversation with a fellow believer and he explained thats its wrong for me to listen to certain gospel artists because they had once worked with some questionable secular artists who according to him were sinners and he tried to explain using Eph. 5:11 that we should not fellowship with these people so how could I support this artist when they fellowship (in this case work) with these kinds of people. Also 2 Cor 6: 14-18 was another strong point of his argument. He went even as far as comparing this gospel artists to Jesus and the secular artist to the devil and that Jesus would never work with the devil. I know that this individual was in fact wrong but it really surprised me how someone could be so "extra" to use the scripture out of context.
Myself I listen to mostly gospel and Christian rap. So I pose to the onolympus community, what type of music is "appropriate" because I've had many discussions with believers about music and it seems like people use more opinion than scripture, or if they in fact refer to scripture will not use it in context.

We all are human, which means we are not perfect and we all have faults. As long as God is getting the glory from the music, then I don't see where the problem is.
If the music brings you closer to God while listening and you engage in worship while listening, then I don't see an issue.

Welcome aboard Dnice...this raises a good question... How should Christians live in a secular world?
Be back later with a lengthy (yet informative) post.

So now would you say jazz or simply music that's instrumental, Christians shouldn't listen to because God isn't getting the glory and it's not bringing you closer to God. Just raising a question going along your post.

Its is clear that born again Believers should not listen to this manson fellow because he is straight up with his demonic message but other artist are very subtle and crafty with putting foul messages in their Like Earth wind and fire with serpent power aka serpentine fire. So we must use discernment even when it comes to jazz. Some artist play a style that is not edifying or relaxing in fact is is confusion. God is not the author of confusion. So if an artist produces his music by spirit guides ,drugs and liquor .... i would leave it alone. For the inspiration will produce strange fruit. Like listening to old school Sade to me it is depressing but back then i loved her song Jezebel ( she wasn't born with a silver sp)on in her mouth) now Johnathan Butler some of his stuff is awesome oh i forgot i mean Jay you are awesome no who ever started this post is awesome

Interesting. I think your spirit knows when something is amiss. As for your friend, he sounds like my brother who wont listen much of any music and doesn't allow his kids to watch tv (but they can play those mind-numbing video games all day--some of which are violent--go figure ). That's a little "off" in my opinion and your friend seems WAY off. I can agree with water's take on Manson and some other artists (dont know about EW&F though). As for being previously aligned with a secular artist....using your friend's very own analogy...does he also believe that "new" Christians arent really Christians? That whole "they used to sing R&B" doesnt really make sense.....so what? We all "used" to be something. It's what/who they align themselves with NOW and whether God is the center of their life NOW. Perhaps they were tinkling on people with R'uah a few years back....but what if that's not them NOW and they've changed....what's the issue? I dont get it.
