This is a plea from one a young lady that i've known for years and am very proud of. She is an educated woman and passionate advocate for her people. She is also a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. Enjoy and please share..
Dear Friends and Family:
Many of you received my text last night urging you to turn on CNN to watch Rev. Wright. I hope the majority of you had the chance to watch his remarks in their entirety because the MSM (main stream media) was doing its best to distort his words once again. I was disappointed in the Today Show who started the newscast by showing a clip of Rev. Wright illustrating the point that often some African Americans are made to feel inferior for using certain dialects when others such as JFK, Edward Kennedy, or Lyndon Johnson are not held to the same standard. If you watched the speech last night you would know that Rev. Wright was not "mocking" JFK - he was saying that his accent - being from Massachusetts - makes him different, not deficient. When he discussed a scientific study that showed that African Americans learn from the Right side of the brain and European Americans learn for the Left side of the brain, a Republican adjunct professor immediately called CNN and said, "what will the Black kids think when they hear they do not learn like everyone else..." It is quite telling that she: 1) immediately assumed that it was the African American kids who were inferior by their learning method; 2) Did not consider what the White kids would think when they hear they do not learn using the more creative side of the brain. However, if she had listened to the speech instead of counting her degrees and rambling off about her professorship, she would have heard that this is not the point. Rev. Wright was not intimating that learning from the right vs. the left or vice versa is better than the other, he was stating that they are different forms of learning and one should not be cited as deficient over the other. This is not new. In managerial courses everyone has to study the four types of ways people learn: Visual (Reading), Auditory (Listening), Kinesthetic (Touch); and Multiple. We are not taught to favor one over the other, instead we have to understand how each learning style affects different people so we can adapt and communicate effectively with everyone.
Having attended a Historically Black College & University, I am trained to recognize the slant towards European culture that is both covert and overt. Only when you can take a step back and learn from a different perspective do you realize that this form of brainwashing is detrimental to children who are constantly told they are inferior because they do not see the African American, Latino-American, Asian-American, Muslim-American, and other minority contributions to society with the same vigor or consistency as the European-American perspective. We are constantly told to walk on the 1-2, while ignoring the 3-4. If you do not understand this reference, you need to watch Rev. Wrights speech from last night. Children are not only brainwashed, but we as adults are led to believe that America is the center of the Universe. While we are watching this 24-7 election coverage, how many men and women have died in Iraq? How many Iraqi's have died since the war began? What is going on in China? How many people in Tibet have been killed protesting for their freedom? What is going on in Darfur? Did you know there was an assassination attempt on the Afghanistan president yesterday and instead of shooting him a 4 year old little girl was killed? Did you know kids in Haiti are forced to eat dirt because they have so little food? This is what should be looped during the evening news and these are the things Rev. Wright talks about when he says we need to understand we are connected to the human race instead of being divided by our differences.
Another point, that was brought up by Rev. Wright is the differences we have in our dialects or accents. I attended college in New Orleans and know that the people who live there have a language that is unique. To them, they consider my southern accent to be unique or different. One can apply Rev. Wrights comments to this scenario. Why do many Whites feel that people who come from New Orleans speak "bad English?" In the movie, The Departed, which I love, all of the actors were applauded for mastering the New Jersey accent. I did not hear anyone speak negatively about how they were portrayed, yet in movies such as Hustle N Flow many mocked the accent of the actors. We could all learn something from what Rev. Wright was saying, however the MSM is trying to twist his words and label him as a fanatic who is "bombastic" as Andrea Mitchell described him this morning. I was glad to hear Rev. Wright challenge this description today and state that his style of preaching is different than some White churches, but not deficient or bombastic. Again, this is why he used figures we are all familiar with like JFK to illustrate his point when he quoted his inaugural address, Ask not...or Awrsk not (how do you spell that)? Watch the speech to understand this.
So I say all of that to say this: If you watched the speech on CNN, it is up to you to set the record straight and let these news outlets know that the speech you heard last night is not the defamatory caricature they are trying to show today. I am asking each of you to email the following news shows and tell them that you are glad CNN aired the whole speech of Rev. Wright, and that you thought it was positive and he has been unfairly criticized in the media. Blind copy all of these addresses in one email and send out your response. I already heard MSNBC mention before Rev Wright spoke again this morning that they had received several emails from people that watched CNN last night and they got a different take on his speech. They need to hear more from us to change the direction of this story. After you send your email, ask everyone you know to do the same. They need to do this today and early so our effect can be felt this afternoon.
It is no surprise that I support Obama. This link to Rev. Wright, as Obama stated himself, is fair game, however the extent to which they are trying to assassinate both of of their characters is not justified and we all have to stand up for what is right. While trying to deflect attention away from her blatant lies about Bosnia, Hillary stated that she would not want Rev. Wright to be her pastor. I hope she is eating her words this morning for breakfast. Who would not want a man who is intelligent, scientifically grounded, passionate, entertaining, inclusive of other religions/cultures, and speaks the word of truth, as a minister? I, for one would and anyone who sees him speak longer than 10 seconds will most likely feel the same. Again, please send out a quick email today to the addresses below and if you missed the speech on CNN you can view it at: tinyurl.com/69q7q6.
PS. I want to publicly thank my line sister, Torri, for helping me get these email addresses and you tube clips. I am so happy to hear that so many of us are supporting Obama. I know Stacy took off from work to volunteer in Pennsylvania, Tanisha sends me magazine articles, Jenea attended a rally, etc. We all have to do our part to fight for Obama because as Bill Richardson said in Spanish he is a man that will stand up for all of us. Please ask everyone you know to send emails and watch the speech from last night and this morning. YES WE CAN!!!!!
