Some Fundamental Changes
The decision to ban pledging was made jointly last February by the Council of Presidents of the National Pan-Hellenic Council. The Council of Presidents, which has met only twice in its 60-year history, consists of the national chief executives of each of the Pan-Hellenic Council's member organizations - the fraternities Alpha Phi Alpha, Omega Psi Phi, Kappa Alpha Psi and Phi Beta Sigma; and the sororities, Alpha Kappa Alpha, Deta Sigma Theta, Sigma Gamma Rho and Zeta Phi Beta.
The decision will ultimately redefine how black Greek-lettered organizations will function and their members behave, said Mary Shy Scott, supreme basileus, or national president, of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority., Inc.
Eliminating pledging, Dr. Scott said, will give potential members more time to establish stronger relationships among themselves.
''I think the organizations will be stronger,'' she said. ''We have so many of us today trying to help our race survive. We are trying to show the world that we are equipped and skilled.''
Moses C. Norman, a former president of Omega and chairman of the Council of Presidents, convened the two-day February meeting in St. Louis to discuss the hazing issue.
''We decided that pledging would not be a prerequisite,'' he said. ''Instead of having pledging, we would have membership intake.''
