TKO for TKE: Glove dispute resolved when Jones agrees to change January 19, 2008
NEW YORK (AP) -- Roy Jones Jr. lost his gloves before he even stepped in the ring Saturday night.
Jones wasn't allowed to wear colored boxing gloves honoring his fraternity, Tau Kappa Epsilon, in his 170-pound fight against Felix Trinidad at Madison Square Garden.
Jones hoped to sport a special pair of Grant gloves in burgundy and gray to match his trunks with the fraternity's TKE logo and colors. After Jones met with Trinidad's father and lawyer on the morning of the bout, promoter Don King said Jones agreed to switch back to Everlast gloves, as specified in the fighters' contract.
"I tried to do good for the TKE, but Tito's father was obstinate, and Tito wouldn't even talk to me," Jones said. "I have to wear Everlast gloves, so Tito will get an everlasting lick upside his head."
Gloves are a sensitive subject to fighters, since different brands can change the speed and power of their punches. Even a few ounces of difference can cause contention in negotiations for fighters' contracts.
Jones was initiated into Tau Kappa Epsilon last August in Pensacola, Fla., his hometown. The fraternity has chapters on more than 250 campuses in North America.
Cam's Comments.... TKE must be hard up for honorary members.......

Roy Jones Jr. went to college? Or is that not a requirement for honorary membership?

<---- Knows some black TKE's
TKE is prolly one of the largest fraternities around. Ronald Reagan was a TKE...that's not saying much. NFL / Chicago Bears founder George Halas is a member. Of all of the white frats I remember TKE's seem to be the most diversed. I still can't imagin Roy Jones being a member. One of my white friends is a TKE.

Cam's Comments....TKE must be hard up for honorary members....... Don't be too hasty in your judgement regarding his membership status. The recruitmant strategies of the majority of IFC affiliates ( - with the exception of the three (3) NPHC fraternities that have full-membership within the NIC/IFC association; namely, KAPPA ALPHA PSI, IOTA PHI THETA, and ALPHA PHI ALPHA - ) is closely related to the intramurals sport activites at colleges & universities during GREEK WEEK; and often are based upon the successful coaxing fit-athlete to RUSH their organizations. TKE? This is a white Fraternity? I thought they weren't active beyond undergrad This is a common mis-conception. Although predominantly WHITE fraternities/sororities do not have very active ALUMNI ASSOCIATIONS, many of their initiates are still very commited to the chapter where they were initiated. Because there is rarely any major emphasis on NATIONAL-aspects of the organizations, this is generally how many of their undergraduate houses (dwellings) are funded and maintained.

wow! we had them at my undergrad too, but the 1 or 2 black guys that did join, probably wouldn't have fit into a Black fraternity anyway. I can see Roy Jones fitting into a BGLO, he's cocky, somewhat attractive, etc etc. lol I don;t see him as a TKE

And if so... just how much hazing is anyone gonna do ... White fraternities/sororities DO have recognition signs, words, and grips. Their organizational interaction (and/or REACTIONs) is probably far less like the CRIME & PUNISHMENT activities associated with BGLOs; but there HAVE been some rare occasions wherein PERPs have gotten whooped by IFC and/or NALFO groups.

Do you think it's rare cause it doesn't happen much, or rare because they often aren't caught? Also (not that I have any reason to disbelieve you) but from what sources are you drawing your infomration on TKE and the like? I'd be interested in taking a look at it myself.

Do you think it's rare cause it doesn't happen much, or rare because they often aren't caught? I believe its rare because the CULTURE of predominantly-White Greek-Letter organizations is primarily a temporal SOCIAL thing. Personally, I have always (and still do) believe that despite the fact most Greek-Letter organizations are nationally incorporated bodies, the fraternal aspect of our orgs is very much a LOCAL thing; wherein the overall entity happens to provide a means of comraderie in remote areas of the world. Because white fraternities/sororities do not perpetuate very active ALUMNI ASSOCIATIONS within their organizations, their members have very little care/concern about intense membership verifications; including their own individual status. EXAMPLE: In addition to Kappa Alpha Psi, I am a past National Officers in PHI MU ALPHA SINFONIA Music Fraternity. While attending a non-organizational related event with members of SINFONIA from nearby chapters, we encountered some members of KAPPA SIGMA. At the sight of them, a white member of a SINFONIA chapter (different from my own) very casually remarked: " I used to be a KAPPA-SIG"; ... at which point my mouth dropped open. ------> "... used to be... ?" Furthermore, when I asked him was he going to introduce himself to his frater, he replied, " Why? He's not from MY chapter." <----- ***D.E.A.D. *** ... from what sources are you drawing your infomration on TKE and the like? I'd be interested in taking a look at it myself. Well, I can only speak definitively on SIGMA CHI, KAPPA SIGMA, TKE, and the FIJIs -- as well as, PHI MU ALPHA -- because of close friendships with local members. Plus, I have actually witnessed them WHOOP some ill-advised individuals who falsely-claimed membership (via other LOCAL chapters) while attending my university's HOMECOMING TAIL*GATE. It wasn't pretty; especially since MOST of the IFC frats at my Alma Mater each have 50+ active undergraduate members at any given point in the school year. At any rate, I can attest that PHI MU ALPHA has a national 3-Phase PLEDGE-Program (with a HELL WEEK); which is implemented slightly different in every region (based upon chapter traditions). But, there IS a series of physical and/or verbal " charges" utilized to verify duly initiated members; including fraternal word(s), sign and grip. Nonetheless, please don't miscontrue that most (or even MANY) of the initiated members follow these protocols consistently. Actually, ( generally) it is often the predominantly-BLACK chapters (at HBCUs) that effectively perpetuate the art of "charging" unknown members upon encounter. These chapters often even host a SEPARATE National convention annually (usually, in DAYTONA BEACH-area) in addition to the National Convention in LYRECREST [Indiana]. My particular chapter - although predominantly white/hispanic - also has this quality because (in addition to an Alpha & Sigma within the chapter) one of my Kappa LBs is also my Phi Mu Alpha LB; and we are credited for re-inventing the PLEDGE PROGRAM almost ten (10) years ago. Sorry for the long reply.

If your friendship doesn't extend beyond your own chapter - why be a national organization? That just doesn't seem right to me.

Its just well-masked in the presence of 'OUTSIDERS'. Sadly, I can attest that there chapters of KAPPA in Texas that "don't fuck it" members initiated in other certain chapters; and I am sure this is NOT limited to KAPPA ALPHA PSI.

Maybe I'm splitting hairs here but that seems like it's more due to Chapter beef and what not. Like say Alpha Chapter might not like Beta Chapter, but they still kick it with Gamma and Delta Chapter. They don't swear off every chapter altogether, because it's not where they were made.
I mean - Road trip anybody?
