My role as an Alpha is to accept that someone is my brother, regardless of his race. I can't sit in on everybody's chapter vote, so I have to assume that the chapter saw something in him that suggests he's of high quality and good moral reputation.
I would vote favorably on a white aspirant for the same reasons I would vote favorably on a black aspirant.

*Reads title of book*
A Brotherhood of Negro College Men.
If someone's already been initiated into Omega, there's nothing I can do about that. You treat them like you're supposed to. But I don't have to recommend or vote for ANYONE and I don't have to justify it to anyone.
@ Fatal: What was your comment.

I don't mind accepting white members, but I don't think we should need to whiten our orgs to make them comfortable. We are orgs dedicated to the uplifting of the black community. We are NOT race neutral organizations... if any such things truly exist.

It seems that whenever Blacks have anythign that is successful, then white people have to invade it. I also feel that BGLO often feel that we are somewhat validated by having a white member. I can't say I have problem with other ethnicites being a member. I just cant' get with white people in them. They kept us out for years which is one of the reason BGLOs were started. Why do we need to include them?

Its one of those things that just make me wonder what the motivation is behind it. I don't have a problem with it, and I know some White Brothers who are about business. But I have no desire to join a White frat so its hard for me to understand why they would have a desire to join ours.

When white people start flocking to BGLO's in droves then i'll be concerned.
They are outliers. It's not something we should be overly concerned with.
Let's ask ourselves a more serious question. Lets ask why there are so many potheads in our orgs. Let's ask why there are so many thugs in our orgs?
Non-black members of our organization pose no threat to us. Nor do they validate us.
They just are.

I agree with Cam and Alphamale. I don't have a problem with it, AS LONG as they understand the history and purpose of the organization. I really don't see them joining our orgs in droves. If that happens, and the purpose and focus of our orgs begins to change, THEN I'll be concerned.
I know a white woman who joined a certain BGLO because she was a teacher, and she greatly admired a program to help at-risk youth run by the org. She was really impressed by their service, and she wanted to be a part of that, so she joined. I have no problem with that.

And I see that as an issue. We always sit back and say "well since it's only a few, it's of no concern." Before you know it, there are thousands and they have taken over right under our noses. Too late for concern at that point.

I think in the history of my UG there have been 3 non-Blacks in the BGLOs. There was some protest to that last one. I thought it was bad that folks(alumni) were so against it just because he wasn't Black...although I think he forgets he's not Black. One day he said "we" or "us," meaning "Black people," to me and I'm sure I looked at him really weird, lol.

<--doesn't mind..so long as they earn it As long as they "earn it"? My lawd...I cringe at such comments! The fact that they are interested and pursue membership against what their peers and family might say is enough "earning" to me. If they are dedicated to the causes and ideals of XYZ why not let them in? As the good word says, "The HARVEST is ripe but the laborers are few!" Why turn away some able-bodied laborers!!!

I really don't think that we'll ever have to conern ourselves with whites flocking to our organizations in droves. Just like those who attend our churches, our HBCUs and participate in other elements of our communities, they are there because they obviously WANT to be there. And just as their numbers in those areas are relatively small, so will they be in terms of those who wish to join our BGLOs.
Bottom line...if he upholds the constitution and standing orders of Alpha Phi Alpha, and is ACTIVE and contributing to the fraternity, he's alright with me...I don't care if he's green! I've already spoken about the white frat up in TN who is Alpha through and through...has even served as president of his chapter.
I'd trade him for some sorry - assed black brothers I know.

ok, here's for a non-Greek, unsolicited, think about it this way comment.
could it be that you dislike non-black BGLO members for the same reason you dislike non-blacks and blacks getting together romantically?
i would like to think that i would be okay with with a non-black BGLO member because it doesn't matter since i'm not a member. on the otherhand, what if i get denied and they get in, then it's 'they took my spot' (jelly).
same thing with interacial relationships; i don't care because it's not my man they are dating. dah well.
*puts up hands to protect face* LOL

BGLOS should now be HBGLOs (Historically Black) Not one, I mean not ONE is without someone from another nationality.
