One thing I hated about OO was the alters. StopHazing is an obvious alter...I doubt very seriously if the real StopHazing would be in Alchemist's hot seat thread asking "Why are you so lame."

GNG and I were actually talking about this last night.
We know they were a part of the character of OO, but in light of all of the security issues, we don't need alters. Once all the regulars are registered, we will limit that amount of accounts registered, and delete alters by their IP addresses. If the IP addresses match for more than 1 registered user, then we will send you a PM asking you to pick one, and we will delete the other.

great - and I sent him an PM showing concern for the old OO.
I talked to someone else about that.....and I think that its best for the safety of the board to delete alters. I think that is one of the reasons why OO fell is because you had all the anons registering. Nothing wrong with that, but with this I Just want to keep it OO and not alters.
THis is a private board. And once EVERYONE registers who needs to, I will disable regular registration to the point where it has to be approved. That will definitely keep alters out.
Just to be fair Cold I will make a poll about the alters being deleted, but I am all for deleting them

What made OO great was its self-moderation. The admin rarely logged on and started pushing people around...
this wont be much of a "temporary replacement" if it veers too far from what OO originally was...

I'll go do the poll but I don't think alters are the problem. I have like 7 alters on OO. And you all KNOW who they are. It's not the alters per se'... it's the anonymous ones.
I'm pretty sure that Cold was that Reggie Bush alter on OO (and it was hilarious). I think we have problems with folks trying to be anon more than just joke alters. Just my opinion.

SH its not about kicking out everyone.
Whenever you have media like this, for the security of the board, there has to be strict admin.
Not saying that the last board was a disaster, bc it was a great board, its just that it was VERY vulnerable.
OO developed a great community of people and everyone has grown to respond to character.
For this board, I think people would appreciate the fact that "its just OO" and not people coming in playing with the board, and trying to bring it down.
I think that since OO has been up AND down, if they want the drama side of it, they can register on another board. But if they want "home" they can come here.

Every week on the old OO we had new members comming in, asking dumb questions, etc. Lurkers are just as important as alters-- they keep things interesting. The newbie threads were some of the most active. The way it is now, we wont GET any new members. Its gonna get boring and stale. fast. |

Lurkers had a role, but I don't know how important it was. And alters were not the backbone of OO. The personalities were. They added to the collective if they were funny and well thought out - or if we knew who the people were (example - everyone knew Tre was the Damagik8ball, or that Tux was the DevilsAdvocate) but some of the alters that we didn't know - just weren't useful IMO
And remember - I have 5 or 6 alters.
Okay just for kicks... who else on this board had an alter on OO. Don't lie be honest. Who had one.

I created 1 to try to get back my stars that were purposely taken from me for no reason...that single rating of 5 didn't do anything though LOL...but I never posted under the alter, only rated myself and a few others a 5...
And while we're being honest THE BOSS was not an alter and did not take the board down. That was my cousin and she could barely figure out how to log in...

EVERY website is vulnerable to a denial of service attack. period. there is no defense. the only solution is to take the site offline until its over. and, consequently, that is the purpose of the denial of service attack-- to slow it down so much nobody can access it, or to force the administrator to take it down. my point is that making these changes in an attempt to make this more secure is pointless. the only way to keep this site up is to hope that whoever was messing with OO doesnt find out about it. blocking lurkers and deleting alters wont make this site invulnerable. |

Actually there IS a defense against DoS attacks. It's probably cost prohibitive to someone like SH, but when those attacks first started they got headlines because of some of the big name companies that were affected. But you CAN defend against DoS attacks.
