OK...so you and your family are at the epicenter of a culture shaking civil rights event.
Media
Exposure
Water Cooler Talk
All of it is about YOU!
You could be on either side of the public opinion equation...the sympathy or the vitriol...but you are a focal point.
You get a phone call and the person on the other end of the line says, "Al Sharpton was wondering if you have a few moments to talk on the phone. He would also really like to be there to support you during this time."
Do you take the call from Rev. Al?
Do you accept his invitation to come down for support? (with the understanding that he will probably be talking to the media)
What do you think? How do you approach it? this could also be applied to any other figureheads in this situation...Rev. Jesse Jackson, Cornel West, Tavis Smiley, etc.

I would take the call but politely decline his assistance. Why? Because I don't need him putting his spin on things OVERsensationalizing things and as he does quite often miscommunicating important facts with opinion.

thank him for the support but inform him there is no need to come down. This. And I would specifically say, "but please do make sure you PRAY for us and ask your congregation [does he have a congregation? did he ever? how is he a Rev?] does the same."

OK while scrolling Wikipedia I found this
Sharpton was licensed and ordained a Pentecostal minister by Bishop F.D. Washington at the age of nine[75] or ten.[76] After Bishop Washington's death in the late 1980s, Sharpton became a Baptist. He was re-baptized as a member of the Bethany Baptist Church in 1994 by the Reverend William Jones[29] and became a Baptist minister.[75][77]
During 2007, Sharpton participated in a public debate with atheist writer Christopher Hitchens, defending his religious faith and his belief in the existence of God.[78][79]
A lil suspect but I know some cornor store preachers so I'm not bent out of shape over it
but this tho...
Sharpton graduated from Samuel J. Tilden High School in Brooklyn, and attended Brooklyn College, dropping out after two years in 1975.[17] He became a tour manager for James Brown in 1971.
how did the country survive with both of those perms in the same vicinity?

Reign, James Brown is THE reason why Al's hair is like that. In fact, Reb'm Al has said that he promised to keep his hair permed as long as JB was alive. I'm assuming you don't remember the thread on the old OO where we talked about JB's death and Brn came in and said "I'm sorry to hear that. But...at least now Rev Al can cut that mess out of his hair" lolol! He didn't do it though. Smh.

I believe I respond with a similar, "thank you for your support. Please continue to keep us in your thoughts and prayers, but no need to come down..."
However, I truly have no idea what my mindset would be at that time. There would obviously be a lot of attention focused on my family. I wouldn't necessarily want to have to deal with that, so there could be some value to having a person who can deflect attention and address media on our behalf.
Looking at it as a project management perspective, Rev Al et al. have many years of experience doing this, and while I knew it would be to grab attention and I couldn't control what he said as a "mouthpiece," dealing with heavy media attention would be one less thing to worry about. :shrugs:

I think I would be okay with Cornell West. Not me. I like Cornel West, I really do. But he's an attention-seeker. Unless making this a pet-project of his was my goal, I'd decline him as well.
