How many of you currently serve as mentors in any capacity?
Do you currently have a mentor?

i wouldn't consider myself a mentor, but i do have a "little sister" through the BB/BS program. I'm also involved with 13-15 age group @ the Girls Club.
i do not, at this time, have a mentor.

I mentor 3 college sophomores through a service program I'm apart of.
I currently do not have a mentor.. but feel like i need one.. which brings me to another question
At what point are you too old to have a mentor?

I'm having an issue with my college age mentees.. They wanna kick it like we homies... I understand the need to develop a brotherly bond but I had to stop one from calling "dawg" the other day.. I aint your damn dawg...
Its hard trying to balance that casual yet "nig I'm somebody you need to respect" line sometimes..

It's particularly hard for me because, what with my being a wunderkin and all, my mentees are my age or sometimes older. I think I mused about this recently, lemme go look. To answer the questions though, yes I have mentees, I also have mentors. And I can't imagine ever being old enough to no longer need mentors. Also, you can't be afraid to utilize younger (or in some ways less experienced/accomplished) folks as resources. If you're old enough to ask whether you're too old for mentorship, be assured there's a whole youth culture with which it would behoove you to get familiar. |

Oh, I remembered incorrectly. My musing was about the fact that I have a mentee who is trying to take on more of a "friend" role but I don't really bang with her all like that to be kicking it with her outside of our professional relationship. Peep:

Chile, she tried to go on vacation with me. As you may know, I am SOO uber selective about who I travel with that I usually travel alone. That was like the ultimate line-crosser for me, lol. Sorta like your "dawg" situation. I had to sit her down.

I mentor with BBBS. I also have two mentors as well. When I don't like what one is telling me to do I go to the other one lol naw jus joking!

I went on a spring break vacation during my early 20's. All I remember about that trip was how annoying we were...Never did it again. |

My Best friends are I do "brocations" almost yearly... we never have any issues as far as someone being annoying.. now Co ed trips..

I'm not currently a mentor to anyone. For that to happen someone would literally have to seek me out and ask me.
And I guess that's how it should be. When someone's ready to hear what you know, they'll find you. In the meantime, I just keep trying to acquire wisdom and use it the best way possible.
