Affirmative Action on college campuses is in jeopardy....
A white Texas woman is having her case heard before the federal Supreme Court that she was denied admission to the University of Texas due to her race...
We'd better get off our ivy league PWI asses and support our HBCU's because we'll need them. Julianne Malveaux, Morehouse and Spelman admin's...as well as Bill Cosby, have been warning us that we've been shopping for colder ice and greener grass at the PWI's and this will backfire....
Affirmative Action, psychologically, has had an adverse effect on HBCU's since AA due to the increasing numbers of black students (myself included) applying to PWI's. The effect, arguably, is that society puts a premium on PWI education, particulary ivy league. Many alumni of HBCU's of the 60's and 70's have sent their children off to PWI's.
Why?
Now, we have a black POTUS whose education spawns from prep school all the way to the leagues. Do not underestimate or discount the influence of this fact as younger African-American students look up to President Obama as their foundation to academic and general success.
Have we been honest about this subject amongst ourselves as a community?

Hmmm... I heard something about this in the news. While everyone is allowed to sue, this goes against the spirit of why affirmative action was created. If she was that special she would have been accepted to UT, regardless of AA.
Black folks should be able to attend any school they wish PWIs and HBCUs... I don't think we should limit ourselves to Black schools. I think society has always put a premium on PWI education and we'll never get around that. But as a community we need to stress the value of an HBCU education and experience and support our colleges so they thrive.

When the HBCUs were dominant in sports, the PWIs wanted a piece of the action so they made PWIs more desirable. Now the HBCUs are suffering because the big money is being filtered back into the PWIs. Magic Johnson, The Fab 5, Michael Jordan (who went to school up the hill from NCCU), and a whole lot more went to PWIs. They should look back and throw us a few pennies. They could have gone to HBCUs but PWIs had the money, lights, women, cameras and the crowds. .We as alumni cannot sustain the colleges with just our little donations per year. The HBCUs need big money from deep pockets. Now that the PWIs are saturated with US, the whites are feeling left out and want to retaliate so reverse discrimination is running rampart. Who is on the basketball court? Who is on the football field? Big money sports draw the big money players and the crowds. The precedent has been set and there is no turning back. We need to figure out a way to draw the big money into our schools.

Magic, Jordan and the Fab 5 all attended PWI's....
The three first black billionaires all attended HBCU's. My feeling is that there are plenty of black people who have benefited from an HBCU education who are both wealthy and resourceful enough to support HBCU's. I'm sorry, but alumni/alumnae of HBCU's are not all poor, broke and busted...
Between the greek orgs, the alumni networks and the all out assault of the indoctrination of American elitism that black folks, in general, have enjoyed, the resources are there. The passion to do it is not....
In 20 years, the term "black community" will be obsolete in a physical sense due to American elitism....

If you read my post again, I think that is what I said. In terms of support, we are supporting our HBCUs but not like what is happening at PWIs. For an example, there are parking spots at TCU that have been paid for and are kept in good condition by some deep pocket. That's not happening at HBCU campuses. At these big PWI campuses there are picnic areas reserved by deep pockets. Most of the alumnae/alumni of HBCU fame sent their kids to PWIs and that is where we the money goes.

Oldskool, I did notice your statement about the Fab5 and the MJ's attending PWI's....my point of restating the fact is that we can expect, for the most part, nothing from those players. You stated that those players need to reach back....it ain't happening, but I'm sure I'm preaching to the choir.
I agree with you, though.
