So I was watching the news this morning and there come on a story about people trying to rob a target. The mugshots come up and it is my son's aunt and cousin (not related to me).
So with the holidays coming around the corner I'm not sure what his father is going to say about them being missing from the events or if he is going to say anything at all.
I don't think I'm going to tell him either.

End of the day, you have to (and I'm sure you will) do what's best for your son. That being said, it is not only his father's responsibility to explain such things. You may not be related to them, but you may very well end up being the one who has to explain what went on (in an age-appropriate way, of course).
For me, as an adult I am now learning certain secrets that my parents kept from me (because they thought it was best), however they never circled back to explain things when I became old/mature enough. It's not the end of the world, but it kinda stings that I went my whole life completely unaware of certain things. Who knows? this could be the perfect opportunity to explain about adult consequences for adult mistakes. The fact that it hits so close to home might actually make a very good impression.

Yes that is awkward. I agree with Leja use it as a teachable moment every action has a reaction/consequence.

Wow. @queen: All I can say is that it is worst case scenario for your son to hear about this from someone other than you or his dad. That's the extent of my "advice". Sorry this is happening with your son's family. Good luck.

Well not to highjack your thread but I just found out that someone in my family is a pedophile (known to everyone else but secret to me)...
