In both my singled and coupled modes I pay for myself or both. My bf and I will alternate events. He'll pay for dinner, I'll pay for the movie. It took him a very long time to get used to this but he finally let his pride down and accepted it. The reality is, at this present moment I make more money than he does. I allow him to pay for somethings but not all. Mainly because it is I who likes fancy restaurants and random events like expensive jazz clubs. So I pay! Doesnt really matter to me.
