And here's why.........
Friday he had D9 members in the studio. He shouted out the Que's and the Delta's at which point Lisa Raye shouted out that she was a Kappa sweetheart...
*Side eye #1*
Then Gary (the male queen character on the show) shouted out that he was an AKA. Rickey laughed and said "Really? You rock that pink and green?" Gary said, "Yeah, I'm an honorary. Pretty girls rock 20 pearls, doncha know???"
*Side eye #2*
Rickey and (Delta) Ebony laughed and carried on the bit a while and then I faintly heard the AKA's skee wee'ing in the background.
*WIDE side eye #3*
I was annoyed so when I got into work I mentioned the exchange to one of my Sorors. She told me that it was just jokes and I was taking it too seriously. I asked what if he had claimed to be a Delta instead of an AKA and she said the Bruhz should have wrecked his a$$ right on air.
*Exasperated side eye#4*
91's issues with this scenario so we're clear.....
#1 Rickey and Ebony should have stopped Gary on the spot and told him that ish wasn't cool (there was a playful way yo do it that could have shut it down without it turning confrontational). D9 members shoudn't endorse such disrespect at any time but especially when members of the org are guests in your house.
#2 Why the hayle were the AKA's there skee weeing during this ish? I put this in the same lane with taking pics with non-Greeks who are throwing up your symbols, etc.
OK, go ahead and tell me you disagree and I'm overreacting.....

Is it possible.. (and this is in my GDI frame of thinking).. because the person is acting as a character (who usually says outrageous things) that is the reason why the whole"I'm an AKA" was taking in jest by the host and the actually AKAs because it was obviously a joke due to the character not being real...
am I making sense? If not I'll shut up.

Being Greek has lost it luster in some aspect and the modern day GDI doesn't care. And you're right 91 to say that Rickey should have said something. I mean seriously who comes out his shows nowadays... I'll wait! Anyway, Brothers & Sisters in Black Greekdom need to show some pride of who they are. Not just at glorified stroll offs and officiated roll calls, but everywhere we go! And it should just be when we wear nalia... seriously, I'm too grown to financially fund someone who had the idea to make a T-shirt >> Let the neos have at it!

Queen, who undoubtedly claims GDI said once that "Greeks can't own colors". It is out of respect that non-Greeks don't do certain things around us. But here is the thing, we, as Greeks are the ones that are outnumbered and if society wills it, they can crash down like a tsunami, drowning any aspect of Greekdom that we have.
I agree with all side eyes, especially the AKA skee-weeing. All 20 of her Founding Mothers would have slapped the mess out of her! I can understand if it was all jokes, but the fact that there are actual MEN, that claim to be AKAs is nothing to laugh at. Public image is probably the best weapon we have to preserve ourselves from extinction and we should take it seriously. And those who are in the limelight should be held accountable for their actions, if it is not happeneing already.

I didn't know that Lisa Raye attended college. Well, they did not have a problem with the MIAKA, so be it. This I didn't know she went to college either! I don't think you overreacted. Rickey said he is serious about his organization and d9 membership but I guess the seriousness goes away when his "cousin" is cracking jokes about his honorary membership. GTFOH. Gary sounds very ignorant did he go to school? What has he done to deserve honorarism (lol that sounds made up). I don't care for his peacocking azz! |

I don't know if I was more annoyed that Rickey, Ebony, and my Soror coworker thought it was OK (because we weren't the target of the disrespect) or that the (obviously young) AKA's didn't see the issue. @ Bun, you are correct that it's possible they handled it off air. But how does the listener know that. The general public walked away from the exchange thinking that this was acceptable fun and games and all good, that's it's fine for folk to perp, even in jest, right in our midst. @southie, the AKA's I know were mad as hayle about the MiAKA mess. I don't know one that was OK with it. @ Reign, yes it's possible. But none of my contemporaries see it that way. Maybe it's generational. I dunno. |

I expected Rickey or somebody to wreck him but Rickey asked him what he was reppin. I thought it was odd but itz his show. Also, he was shouting out all the other Greeks and hadn't mentioned the Kappas. So SHE(LisaRaye) shouted out the Kappas and said she was a KSweet. I'm not surprised but it wasn't just some random thing on her part. |

Feeling kinda crossed on this.
As a fellow greek I feel Ricky should have said something indicating that wasn't kool. However is it really his responsibility to say anything at all?

I dont know how you all may take this but, i think it goes without saying that this is completely your fault. As it was stated before, Rickey probably SHOULD have stopped the situation but he didn't....he isn't the root of the situation. You all are. You can't openly disrespect each other (via chants, strolls, step shows, etc) in the presence of "outsiders" and expect them to have equal respect for all D9 orgs.
I know WAY too many aspirants that are never slow to spit out an insanely disrespectful slander towards a member/chapter of a "rival org". It is beyond disgusting and annoying.....BUT....I know they get it from what they've seen and heard from the Greeks they've been around. So they can't really be at fault.
It's like if you are in a grocery store and a little boy pushes pass you while yelling "move bitch!". Yeah, he SHOULD know better....but he only knows what he's seen and heard.One person telling him that what he said is bad isn't going to do much cause when he goes home his reality is such statements are ok. So don't hate Rickey....you all are to blame. Until you all stop disrespecting each other in outsiders presence you can't expect much more from them.

As for the tomfoolery, that is synonmous to Ricky Smiley to me, I'm sorry. No, I wouldn't expect him to check whoever in whatever way because as long as it has nothing to do with the Ques, he's cool.
I remember at a stepshow for homecoming during ugrad, Ricky Smiley was the host. OK, we know you a Que, we know you got love for the Deltas. But here is the kicker. He had his daughter come out and he said tell the people what you gonna be when you go to school (all this is on stage in front of everyone).
Instead of saying I'm want to be a Delta when I go to college, she actually throws the pyramid and walks off stage with the pyramid still in the air (mind you, she wasn't little like in elementry, she was like maybe in highschool at the time). The Deltas at my school actually did the call to her as she walked off stage, doing the handside. And if you didn't know what was going on, or if you weren't at my school and just walked in, you would've thought the Deltas were saluting their soror instead of Ricky Smiley's daughter who wasn't even in college yet.
So yeah, if it doesn't have anything to do with Omega, he is down for all types of tomfoolery for other D9 orgs.
